If you saw Berberian Sound studio or like the work of Peter Strickland or anything filmed in peak pointy lapels and flares era, Talking Pictures TV Encore's online channel (their version of iplayer for Talking Pictures TV) has the Spanish 1973 sort of 'giallo' A Candle for the Devil, a rare outing for this sort of movie on UK TV. It's very Peter Strickland, with a dash of Psycho, And Soon the Darkness and Carry on Abroad.

2nd series if The Great has started on C4. Nicholas Holt and Douglas Hodge are brilliant in it. It's completely mad and lots of bad language but I find it extremely funny and suits my strange sense of humour.

Yep - another fan of The Great here. Great surreal humour and fab production values.

It's a stroke of tv genius isn't it, so glad it's come back onto a channel I have.

Kate Bush night has finished so we've just switched over to Ch4, where a film called Le Mans 66 (US title Ford vs Ferrari) is on. It doesn't look like my cup of tea, but is apparently co-written by Jez Butterworth so thought I'd mention it on here!

Watched the first two episodes.
Very high production values. Good cast.
But have to concentrate on the details.

Anyone watching The Sandman on Netflix? It's entertaining and benefits from superb casting, but there's a listless quality to it and the visual compositions are just so flat and everything looks so very distinctly CGI. Overall, finding it just alright, and will see how it ends (if I end up finishing it that is).

I've watched the first two episodes but it's not working for me so far. I read and enjoyed the comics back in the day, but on-screen fantasy storytelling has moved on by leaps and bounds in the last 30 years. This feels slow, leaden, the dialogue and characterisation simplistic and I'm just not feeling invested in the quest / threat. I'd be interested to know if those who haven't read the comics are getting into it.

Give up after 10 minutes. Not my thing I am afraid. I also tried a film called Benediction on Netflix and gave up on that too.
I now have a policy of 10 minutes watching and if it doesn't grab my attention I give up.

Black Bird on Apple TV+. Jeeeeeee. The two leads, played by Taron Egerton and Paul Walter Hauser, both incredible.
edit: I guess this should be in the streaming thread actually.

Really looking forward to tomorrow's ep. What a great ending. Trouble with these blockbusters, ending them well is really hard. But they nailed it. And with Jimmy and Kim, as good as we could have wished for, eh? Great series. Beautifully acted and shot.

Anyone watching Marriage on BBC1? Thoughts?
I am watching it for the 2 main actors but god is it boring. Literally nothing happens. I know that is the idea and I think it worked with Him & Her and Mum. But they were 30 minute episodes. These are hour long episodes and I am afraid they just don't keep my attention. I will probably be in the minority and the reviews seem to be generally good. I will watch all 4 episodes for a masterclass in acting however.
I enjoyed Him & Her and Mum but both programmes had a female character who was vile, and they were similar in both series. They used to wind me up no end. I'm not a violent person but my patience would be stretched if they were real people in my life.

So many questions, which I hope we'll get answers to by the end of hour 4. At least we've learnt that Nicola Walker is pretty good at thinly slicing a tomato.

I’ve only seen the first episode of Marriage so far. I don’t mind that observational/fly on the wall style, but it does feel a bit too slow. Can’t help wishing it was a bit more like Mum, but I’m intrigued enough by it to keep going. It reminds me a bit of Dawn French and Alfred Molina in Roger and Val Have Just Got In.
I’ve only recently found out about the run of “game changing dramas” on BBC Four, so I’ve probably missed most of them, but it was fascinating watching The Roads to Freedom. I’m really surprised how much they could get away with on BBC2 back in 1970. Bet Mary Whitehouse was livid.

I'm really enjoying Marriage but it's definitely not going to be for everyone (and people on Twitter seem to absolutely despise it, I've never seen such hatred for a TV show before, especially one so seemingly inoffensive). I'm enjoying the slice of life feel to it and recognising little bits of behaviour from each character in people I know, and it's got some good laughs out of me although it's obviously less of an overt comedy than Mum (which I absolutely adored).
I must get around to watching Him and Her at some point but I tried the first episode and it just seemed more cynical maybe than Mum which put me off a bit. Marriage is more on that side of things than Mum was though so maybe this'll acclimatise me to it and I'll settle more easily into Him and Her's tone.
Also just finished Better Call Saul and I'm happy to say it kept up its quality the whole way through. I hope this is the last we see of the Breaking Bad world though, I want to see what these creatives can do in a different playground.

I have seen the first 2 episodes now and I am enjoying the observational quality of it.The nuanced performances and the looks etc do ring true. It is certainly different from most dramas but I am still wanting to watch the last 2 episodes which is more than can be said for other dramas this year bar a few.

I'm back at the start of S1 now and am rewatching with the family, who haven't seen any of BCS before. I'll be able to make a definitive judgment once we've got to the end of S6 again. On the whole, was a really great series and is upsetting that it's over. Am looking forward to seeing what Vince & the team come up with next.

I am enjoying Marriage - perhaps because it features a couple who have been together almost as long as my partner and I, and who are navigating that stage of life when children are in their 20s and trying to make their own way. I also like the fact that I have no idea (after watching 2 episodes) as to whether something properly dramatic is going to happen. My enjoyment is further enhanced by people getting into a fluster about the 'theme tune'. I am a huge fan of Caroline Shaw (who thankfully makes regular visits to perform in London) and the music is her Partita for 8 voices for which she won the Pulitzer Prize in 2013. The full piece can be seen here:

Argh, looks like I've missed them - I don't watch much drama in the summer because of the live sport and long daylight hours, and I was assuming they'd be up on iplayer for when the nights draw in, but they're not!

When I heard it first as the theme tune I thought it was some kind of line dancing instructions.

BBC4 is showing a repeat of The Buddah of Suburbia tonight from 1993. Well worth seeing if you missed it first time around.

No spoilers, but glad to say the first episode of House of the Dragon is very promising! Spoiler follows: there is a death in childbirth scene that is very harrowing though there is a content warning at the start of the show

I watched all ten of the original episodes (the two bonus episodes are being saved for later), and I think your description is fair. I was interested in the details and world building from the start, but didn't particularly care about any of the characters until the second half of the series. I've not read the comics, and knew just a little about them, so was coming in fresh. I know the point of Dream is that he is other worldly and detached, but it's harder to connect with that kind of introverted, silent type on screen than it is in books or comics. I don't want to spoil, but that improves as the series progresses, helped by the introduction of more sympathetic characters that are easier to root for. I enjoyed the look of the whole thing. Whoever did the hair and make-up seems to have been heavily influenced by The Human League and similar 80s pop, which was both enjoyable and a bit distracting. It's hard to take a demi-god seriously when I'm expecting them to burst into a rendition of "Don't You Want Me" which is already on repeat in my head. That sounds quite negative, when overall I enjoyed it. It was something a big different and I look forward to watching more.
