I have never said it should have been done in public. I have consistently said that this matter should have been kept out of public sphere. They have made a difficult situation worse by effectively teasing the allegations. If they felt they had to go public, then they should have gone fully public. Their chosen path has made things worse for everyone. Not a chance it is worth than if they had added a name

I can only restate what I have already stated- what a mess!
I hope that they both- Meghan in particular- has the necessary support structure in place at this difficult time.

Say or think what you want but all I witnessed last night is two things;
1/ Their marriage seems pretty strong; and 2/ Oprah seemed (a little) uncomfortable in that chicken coup.
I liked the reference to The Little Mermaid.

If you take that view you are perpetuating the problem. It really doesn't require a huge amount of thought to realise that any question about someone's skin colour might be considered inappropriate by someone of a different racial background and to choose to do your own research rather than asking the question. That is not me making any sort of judgment on what IS offensive or inappropriate, but on what MIGHT be (though in this case it is blindingly obvious that it is in any context) and choosing accordingly not to ask the question. I am choosing not to put someone of different racial heritage in a position that may be uncomfortable to them - it is not my place to decide that they should have to tolerate that when the topic is race. If they want to start that conversation then it is an entirely different scenario as that is their right, not mine. If anything else it is just basic politeness and consideration for someone else who is in a situation that because of my racial background I cannot possibly fully understand. But my responsibility is to learn about it in a respectful way, not expect that I can find out by asking questions no-one would ever dream or asking a white person. And the generational argument is no excuse. There is no excuse for any level of racism, whether deliberately or not. I'm astonished at some of the responses I have read on here and elsewhere following this interview. It's sad to see the extent that lack of racial understanding and compassion are still a huge problem. Largely I agree with you, but in Britain race is a taboo subject. We don’t see it, we don’t acknowledge it and we do not discuss it. In Britain I’d argue most people are not racist but the way in which we have achieved this has created its own problems - primarily that a lot of people cannot recognise things like institutionalised racism or white privilege. Not recognising it doesn’t make you racist, it just means you need to have discussions on race and become part of a conversation in order to become better educated. People (but mostly younger people) are becoming more aware thanks to the BLM movement, but if you don’t know that you don’t know something, how does someone go away and learn it? Conversation is key and we have to make it okay for people to discuss race in a safe way. In my opinion family should always be a safe space where you can discuss anything and everything behind closed doors, without being judged. They should correct you if you’re wrong, but never judge you for it (unless there is malicious intent) and a free exchange of ideas and opinions should be encouraged. Historically we’ve said racism (and homophobia) are learnt behaviours in the home, but at least we know now that it’s also where they’re being challenged too - younger generations are having to re-educate older generations as society moves forward. Just look at new terms like ‘Woke’ and ‘WAP’ - I bet you most people over 50 couldn’t tell you what in hell they actually mean. Now in the context of this Harry and Meghan interview, which I haven’t yet seen, we know the conversation was between a Royal Family member and Harry - so not with Meghan and very much a white person asking a white person. Let’s assume this was a tactful move to avoid causing offence by discussing race with Meghan, showing some form of a moral compass. It was behind closed doors, family asking family, almost certainly an older generation asking a younger generation - fundamentally a safe space. Of course Harry had violated that safe space by making the conversation, if not the family member, public. Again I don’t know the details, but you would hope Harry could politely correct his relative and explain it wasn’t appropriate - and explain why if needs be. I don’t know that it needed to be made public either, but I’ll wait until I’ve seen it. I don’t agree at all that race is “taboo” in Britain, or that most Brits aren’t racist. Britain is a deeply racist country. Ignoring, downplaying, or excusing racism is 100% racist. Harry and Meghan explained the context of the conversations. There’s no way it wasn’t explicitly and overtly racist. Anyone defending racism is a racist. Period. And guff about how speaking out against racism is betraying a safe space is a classic tactic used to silence victims of abuse.

Can you imagine if Philip kicks the bucket while he's in the hospital? I can already see the Daily Mail's front page going "MEGHAN KILLS THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH"

Would it ever be possible for Royal news to be consigned to its own channel? I ask because I could not care a single jot what they're up to yet the coverage is incessant. There must be actual news they could be covering!

I do wonder what will happen to the Monarchy after the Queen. She has been Queen for almost 70 years now and is generally a very popular figure. For most Brits, she's the only Monarch we've ever known. I just can't imagine, especially after this recent upheaval, that Charles will inspire the same level of popularity or favour. I don't think he will. I can't imagine the crowds lining the streets waving their Union Jacks for him to same level people do with the Queen.
I can see it happening with William. I believe he could be a popular King. He seems to appeal to a younger generation, but with Charles, we're going to most likely have a decade or two of "meh" towards the Monarchy.
I'm glad Harry and Meghan did what felt right for them, but the Oprah interview was a little self-indulgent in my opinion. It has only fueled more gossip. It will blow over, however. Life goes on and we're creatures of habit. Today's paper lines tomorrow's litter tray.

Am I the only one who see this as another reason for saying goodbye to the whole Royal Family? In Britain you cant really separate racism from snobbery, just takes many forms. All snobbery flows downwards from the rotten head of this state.
Why do we allow this to continue?
This storm really is about The Royal Family. They emigrated to get away from racism? In that case why choose the USA which has even bigger problems with this.

Personally I much prefer a ceremonial head of state than an elected President. We don't need any more politicians trying to strut around.
Could you imagine President Blair?
*shudder*

I think the racism they're talking about in the UK was more specifically targeted at Meghan. She's lived in the US, so must be comfortable with the base level of societal racism. (And she may live in enough of a celebrity/wealth bubble to be exempt from the background racism.) Personally I much prefer a ceremonial head of state than an elected President. I wish the US had a neutral/ceremonial national representative. The US system makes even something like a winning athletic team being honored at the White House into a political issue.

Could you imagine President Blair? *shudder* Why not have an elected President Blair? Or President Thatcher? Or maybe President Johnson. It is better than an unelected Prince Andrew. At least we can elect them out, when we are done with them, it’s called a democracy.

Prince Andrew has nothing to do with this. His former role as part of the family is in no way equivalent to that of a President.
Our Monarchy may not be perfect but it is preferable to my mind to any of the alternatives that have been proposed.

Prince Edward is everything to do with it, as we still pay taxes to keep him and we have no say whether to keep him or not.

The Queen's statement seems to suggest that she didn't have a clue how bad things were for the Sussexes. They didn't just leave the country on a whim. It's beyond belief that she didn't know what was going on.

Mixed feelings about Piers going. Good Morning Britain has not shied away from calling out the government on its p*ss poor handling of the pandemic (unlike the BBC) and I feel like he was a major part of that.
