Not to stray too far off topic, but You Have Been Loved by George Michael is one of the few songs that can actually bring me to tears when I listen to it.

George was a legend who had sold however many million records then. Olly is nowhere near what George was commercially or creatively. The key difference is that George Michael could actually sing live, wrote better songs, knew how to put on a show, wasn't consumed by his own ego, was humble and was witty enough to parody his own life and sexuality through his art without being crude. Other than that, it's a legitimate comparison. so.....given that my post was included in the original quoting embeds here.....my comparison was about the staging. I never said anything about any of those other things. It feels like I got piled on here, for what I felt was me just extending a point someone else had made in a post above mine. I don't know why some of these threads have become so unpleasant in the last few months, with people seemingly willing to leap on and maul other people's opinions, but it makes me want to spend a lot less time here.

Northern Allen - I certainly didn't intend to maul your post or feel that I have said anything negative about what you said. I do like some of Olly's Years and Years music and he was superb in It's A Sin. I was more appreciating what a great artist George was and remembering him. This is a fun and thoughtful forum which is well moderated so please don't feel the need not to post your own constructive thoughts and views.

Hi NorthernAlien - I'm sorry if my comments came across as unpleasant or a pile on. It certainly wasn't my intention to single you out. My response was meant as a general comment, not a criticism of your view (which of course you are entitled to share). Genuinely, no harm was meant in my post so I apologise if it caused you concern.

Apparently Nemo has had a girlfriend for the last five years - presumably is still with her - and 'came out as nonbinary' a few months ago. The 'queer nonbinary witch' (as she called herself in interviews) Bambi Thug, wearing a trans flag bikini, performed on stage with her longtime boyfriend. One does rather get the feel of 'spicy straights' giving themselves a rainbow wash for votes here.

Identifying as non binary doesn't mean they can't still be attracted to their partners.

Identifying as non binary doesn't mean they can't still be attracted to their partners. 'Gender identity' is the more sexist and regressive rebranding of what we used to just call a personality or personal style in dress sense. I don't think it makes you oppressed or a freedom fighter in the way gay people who sometimes used the controversial word 'queer' had to be in the 80s.

I understand that non binary is clearly different to say asexual - a term you don't hear so much these days.Would the old fashioned transvestite who used to secretly dress up in his wife's clothes we used to hear about have been classed as a gender identity or maybe a fetish or a kink?
It's always good to learn how all the relevant terms fit in to what terms were previously used.
On a Eurovision theme 3 of the songs from last week charted in the top 40 yesterday and Olly recharted just outside of that.

I don't think you're uniquely qualified to tell other people what or who they are. The world evolves, catch up rather than becoming the very same type of person that those freedom fighters from the 80s had to fight against, but for the next generation of young queer people.

... The world evolves, catch up rather than becoming the very same type of person that those freedom fighters from the 80s had to fight against, but for the next generation of young queer people. Does that argument work though? There are parts of the world (e.g. Russia, India, Egypt to name three) that have evolved in this century in a counter-progressive direction. I wouldn't want to "catch up" with those. Surely it is valid to question, challenge and fight against any evolution we disagree with?

I am never going to 'catch up' with, or view as 'progressive', an ideology that tells young people that they're 'born in the wrong body' and need surgically 'fixing' if their behaviour doesn't conform to a set of regressive pink and blue stereotypes. I was lucky enough to be a child in the genuinely progressive 70s and 80s, when we could dress and behave pretty much how we liked, and no one told me it made me 'more' or 'less' of a girl - bliss it was in that dawn to be alive etc. This stuff now is taking us back to the 1950s and before.

Different generations have different views and people's views change in time. My views on sexuality were far more conservative and probably prejudiced in the 1980's and early 1990's but now I hope that I have become more tolerant and inclusive. I don't agree with some ideas and thoughts that come from the LGBT community but the rights for same sex couples and progressive equality legislation which I would never have supported 30 years plus ago I now just accept as being right and wonder why my views were so different back then.

And all the gays and lesbians in the seventies and eighties were trying to convert/corrupt your children to homosexuality and destroy their lives! This right-wing scaremongering sounds very familiar!

Joost Klein continues to fare very well, despite not being part of it!
His song is apparently the most streamed, even beating the winner Nemo.
Last week tower bells across the Netherlands all played 'Europapa' at the same time.
He has gained hundreds of thousands more followers on social media.
Some of his booked performances are being moved to bigger venues - including in Sweden where his upcoming performance has been moved from an 800-capacity to 2000-capacity.
At a Dutch festival yesterday between 8000-9000 turned up for his set, with organisers putting in crowd control measures because it was feared as many as 20,000 might try to watch him. Drones were flying over the crowds continuously to monitor it.
Joost is expected in Swedish court in June, and his Swedish lawyer is confident it will not go any further. I personally find it odd after describing him as a very aggressive man, not a single soul has come forward saying they witnessed this behaviour, nor any footage.
But only time will tell. I know all about different faces in public and in private.

Don't be absurd. It is literally the opposite. In the USA and UK, it is Conservative Christian and homophobic parents who are eagerly 'transitioning' effeminate boys into 'straight' girls and vice versa (Iran, btw, has been using state funded transitioning as 'gay conversion therapy' for years now). Look up the words of Kai Shappley's 'Christian mom', or ex-Mermaids CEO Susie Green's Ted Talk where she describes her husband's attitudes to her son's behaviour. The majority of children referred to the Tavistock in the UK were same sex attracted - clinicians had a dark joke that "there would be no gay people left at the rate Gids was going". There's a cohort of young people who if left to grow up naturally would most likely be gay & fully functioning now being sold a fantasy that will turn them into lucrative medical patients for life: two of the most famous celebrity 'trans girls' are now in their 20s and beset by health problems. I know two teenage boys on this route, one a relative and yes, I am worried about the outcome. I knew what we now call a detransitioner (post op) some years ago and she was one of the most distressed people I'd met to that point.

This is now way off topic. Both opposing opinions have been stated so move on from the trans debate now please.

I know all about different faces in public and in private. That's what I thought. Usually when something like this happens, suddenly people left and right come forward with their own stories, and no one seems to have any so far. Being Dutch speaking it's easy to have been following online with articles and clips, and filling my sleepless nights with looking at clips of him on youtube, interviews and such. He actually comes accross as just a nice but silly guy (obviously, I don't know him, so I could be wrong). While visiting Belgium next month, he's actually playing an outdoor gig 10 minutes from the house, but it's our leaving day so we'll miss that. I don't like the type of music he does at all, but would have been willing to stand on the sidelines just to hear Europapa because I do love that kind of atmosphere it brings along.
