Hi so im the girl who was proposed to yes he new what the musical was about, although it about murder, they sing how their love is god. The reason my other half propsed (if you watch the video) is because i love the musical, esipally heather as it my favioute movie and also the first movie we watched together. I hope one day you will find someone who makes you as happy as my other half does, instead of being negative about an amazing gesture. Veronica also abandons JD after he physically harms her, and after it turns out he wants to, uh, murder everyone in the school. He's a nutcase, she's gullible. I'm sure it's very sweet and I wish you well (as does everyone else on this board, I imagine!) but the reasoning is a bit funny. Incidentally some acquaintances of mine got engaged after he quoted something from The Taming of the Shrew to her (she's called Kate). It's a play about appalling domestic violence... I Will Always Love You (a song about leaving someone) and Saving All My Love For You (about having an affair with a married man) are probably popular wedding dance songs, so I suppose this isn’t all that bad in context.

I swear the industry only started offering all these young persons discounts the second I turned 26. Knowing my luck they’ll probably stop all the senior discounts when I reach 60.

Strangely I met a Caroline last night as a friend of a friend on our quiz team. I showed her the deal during the break and she said she’d seen a previous production but was left disappointed

I know multilingual people who get distracted by subtitles when they speak both languages, and I can imagine that would be distracting especially if the translation isn’t completely accurate. Otherwise I quite like English subtitles for English language films - they’ve helped with certain Western films when the US accents are so thick and mumbly that I can barely understand them.

The only comedy shows I’ve ever been to with TV characters and sketches transferred to stage was Steve Coogan and Harry Enfield. They were fun, but didn’t quite have the same impact live. Still, good for Tate as I recently caught a couple of repeats of her show on U.K. Gold - I’d forgotten how funny she is.

You should absolutely complain to STAR and also SOLT. And as suggested, your credit company should step in if you have no luck. It would be interesting if a whole bunch of people did this, got refunds from their credit card company and just didn’t show up, leaving a half empty theatre. They may think twice about it next time.

I’m really bad with these types of films. The old ones seem to still be effective but I don’t think I’ve seen a genuinely scary movie for at least 10 years. I laughed through this and predicted every beat of the action. Scary Movie was actually more terrifying.

Does winning for ‘Best Song’ count for EGOT purposes? I believe so, so long as it's in a competitive category. Yes, definitely. Lin Manuel was all set for his EGOT with Moana, unfortunately pipped to the post by La La Land.

I’m still failing to see anything natural or brilliant about Lady Gaga’s performance. It was fine and did the job, but no more than Whitney Houston in The Bodyguard. I put the two films as a parallel really because the circumstances are quite similar - successful female singer approx 8-10 years into her career lands first movie role playing a singer; male co-star in his 40s is hot stuff right now and is instrumental in casting of singer; movie and soundtrack is a commercial success; movie ends on female singer performing big ballad in tribute to lead male character. In fact that last song had so many hints of I Will Always Love You in its delivery I noticed it right away.

Regina King’s big scene in If Beale Street Could Talk was phenomenal. A hell of a lot more subtle than those showy OTT turns people praise from the likes of Viola Davis.

I think the momentum for a Glenn Close win is gathering steam so unless someone else comes along to pip her to the post at the last minute, I can't see it going to anyone else, rather like Julianne Moore's win for 'Still Alice'. I *do* think Gaga will get a Best Actress nomination though. Plus Gaga will win the Comedy/Musical Golden Globe (Close will win the Drama one). It's Bette Midler in 'The Rose' all over again. My prediction is that she’ll win the GG and maybe a couple of others, but she’ll give some overlong, annoying acceptance speeches showing some obvious fake humility and will end up pissing people off.

I wish I could have done this with Pippin earlier in the year. I’ve only ever done it a couple of times with films, before I had the Unlimited card. I was tempted to do it for Avatar when I only paid £1 uplift for 3D at the time.

No, I wouldn’t be surprised if it cleaned up. The Academy are desperate to have a populist film sweep the ceremony due to the load of recent Best Picture winners with low box office scores and the constant (IMO unfounded) criticism that they’re elitist. Lady Gaga really doesn’t deserve a nomination however as I’ve just come back from seeing the main contenders at the LFF and can easily pick out about 8 performances (even discounting Glenn Close) far more deserving and accomplished.

Hamilton hasn’t even extended past March 2019 yet so hold your horses on speculation.

Etangs Noirs was at 70 minutes, one of the most tedious and pointless films I’ve ever seen. The last half of the film is literally watching a man on a metro train walk about from carriage to carriage. Might as well just put a hidden camera on anyone when taking the tube.
The White Crow was ambitious but pacing was all off until the last 40 minutes. It was lovely to see Ralph Fiennes talk about it in the intro though as he was clearly very passionate and quite emotional about getting it made.
Best films so far for me have been Wild Rose, Beautiful Boy and Colette.

We're really NOT. I was having a conversation with an American theatre-going friend once who thought she'd probably seen maybe seven penises on stage. Ever. I've seen seven penises on stage in a single show more than once, the US has to try MUCH harder if they want *us* to be the "hung up on sex" half of the Special Relationship. Now you’ve got me trying to recall how many penises I’ve seen on stage.... How many times does Puppetry of the Penis count?

He thinks the UK is hung up about sex?? Hardly. The USA went into meltdown because Janet Jackson flashed a covered up nipple!! I still laugh at that debacle. I can’t believe that actually happened, plus the revelation that some head of CBS made it his mission to completely blacklist Janet Jackson from mainstream media at the time. I can’t even imagine that happening to anyone in the UK. Judy Finnegan’s “wardrobe malfunction” (sans nipple) is seen as one of the funniest TV moments of the decade. Anyway, never heard any laughs from that line, and let’s just say I’ve seen Hamilton in London (with an audience) quite a few more times than LMM.

The ones I’d argue are synonymous with their name and image. I’d say in the western world, Marilyn Monroe, Michael Jackson, Charlie Chaplin and Elvis Presley. Maybe James Bond as a fictional character.
Muhammad Ali would have been my go-to sports figure. I argued with some of my football fan friends who go on about these guys as if I’m supposed to recognise them, that Roger Federer on the other hand was a well known figure that even people with no interest in or knowledge of Tennis would know, but they even proved me wrong as we did find some hermits who didn’t know who he was. I mean seriously I only first heard of David Beckham when he started dating a Spice Girl. I think Gary Linekar was the first and only footballer I’ve ever known purely for being a footballer and not because he dated a pop star or got in trouble with the law.
I wouldn’t say any stage stars are household names across the world.

Isn’t everyone in some kind of bubble? I’ve had so many conversations about sport and entertainment with people and I’ve been ignorant to people that they’d consider to be household names and vice versa. I even recently saw an episode of a game show where a 50 something woman had never heard of Muhammad Ali! It actually got me thinking of which famous non royal, non political famous figures I’d honestly consider to be proper world famous everywhere.

I thought Wild Rose was wonderful, and Jessie Buckley is a star. Really raw, honest and powerful performance and so much said in her eyes alone. Julie Walters and Sophie Okonedo are great as well. Amazing. My favourite of the lot so far. It was just such a feel good film and I can’t wait to see it again. Jessie Buckley is amazing and I was so impressed with the young production team. The Director and Producer both looked like they were in their early 30s.

Well this was...fine. I mean I might be overly harsh, I had fun in there, on the whole. But I’m not convinced by it as a musical. For me it doesn’t know where to put itself between the much darker edge of the film (so I’m told, admittedly haven’t seen it) or fluffy high school set musical. For me, not having seen the film as well I found it hard to sit with the idea we are supposed to be on the side of the murdering teens- now don’t get me wrong I have a very very dark sense of humour so if it was done with a much darker “tone” I’d have likely been more on board. But for me it never quite was as dark and twisty as I’d like. The music is decent and I’ve been listening to it a lot in recent weeks. However I do think the best songs are all in act 1 (Beautiful, Candy Store, Freeze Your Brain, Big Fun) inf act aside from the very good “I say No” I struggle to remember anything from act 2. That said it was still enjoyable. Everyone in it is great. Don’t set the fans on me but I think that’s the first role I’ve seen Carrie in that truly suits her (erm pun intended) and I thought she was fantastic. Personal shout out to Becky Lock who looks like she’s having the time of her life. My quibbles aside, it was amazing to see so many teens in there having a wonderful time. Long may such musicals continue. Watch the film if you can. I think it shows Veronica’s ignorance of what JD is coercing her to do a lot more than the show.

Was going to go in November too as I can’t make any repeat visits at TOP. This truly deserves a proper run. Wonder whether it really is investors and not just casting issues at such short notice. I hope it’s the latter.
There was a recent video of Laura and Rob recording Comic Book Kind of Love. Any hints of a proper cast album rather than Ben Adams substituting vocals?

I never understood why shows with short running times choose to start later than 7:30pm. Why not just let everyone be happy and go home early? Fun Home and The Exorcist were like that anyway. The best was Sea Wall at the Old Vic - 7pm start, 7:30pm finish.

I can’t tell you the number of people I know who have never been to the theatre (or not been in over a decade) and use the excuse of the ticket prices, but then ignore me when I find great deals for them for under £20. The ticket price excuse is not always the most honest answer from some.
I sometimes do it when people ask why I go to plays and musicals but not opera or ballet. Ticket prices are a small factor for why I’ve never been to the ballet, but if someone offered me a cheap ticket tomorrow I’d probably still turn it down.

There is something about Bradley Cooper that puts me off. He looks like an evil dolphin. However You all make it sound like a film worth watching. However if you want to see a great performance by a woman watch The Wife with Glenn Close. Film performance of the year. I loved The Wife. Bradley Cooper always reminded me of a human version of Cyril Sneer - the bad guy from the 80s cartoon The Raccoons. And I think only people between the ages of 33-40 will even get that reference.

I also didn’t quite get the scene where she punched the guy in the bar. It was like that aggression came out of nowhere and that side of her personality was never revisited again.
