Just back to the hotel from the show; am intrigued to see how the voting played out on TV given that the audience reaction in the hall was very vocal. It didn't help that Tattoo was staged very much for a TV audience and wasn't as engaging in the arena. But I think the audience reaction might make the EBU think again about the way the results are being announced - it's very dramatic but it can be cruel, like James Newman's zero points from the public vote two years ago. There was no jury vote in the semi-finals this year; given that Finland won the public vote for the final I will be interested to understand why they think juries need to be involved in the final but not the semi-finals.

Watched the Spanish version. It was extremely flat:
Now UK. Mel Giedroyc forever.

And the winner is …… Liverpool. Pier Head has been boss for a week.
Sweden winning when next year will be the 50th anniversary of Waterloo (the song not the battle) is a bit suspicious? I’m claiming fix as nobody liked Sweden.

The exact reason why this isn’t a song contest anymore. I think there is an increasing situation where the entries are taking the piss, just to see how far it gets them. Croatia being another example. It’s a shame. I agree on this. There was an unselfconscious charm to the old Eurovision that has been lost in globalising homogeneity. Now some acts are very much playing up the kitsch, but once kitsch becomes self conscious it ceases to be kitsch. It just feels like Timmy Mallet or Mr Blobby, which are successful drunk party crowd pleasers but not good music, not something you'd put on at home and listen to. For years there's been that complaint that the UK view it through a 'comedy' lens and that's why we don't win. When we put forward an act who could sing and took it seriously we did (yes, I regard last year as a win if you take away the politics).

I think it was the mad combination of camp, Latin dancing, fetish costume - the epitome of Eurovision being bonkers The exact reason why this isn’t a song contest anymore. I think there is an increasing situation where the entries are taking the piss, just to see how far it gets them. Croatia being another example. It’s a shame. Croatia was just awful, sounded and looked horrid, if that got through it’s time to change the voting system . I agree it’s a shame for those who make an effort but lose out.

It's always been a strange mix of camp, kitsch, sincerity and idiosyncratic weirdness. The songs that ended up in the top ten were all memorable performances and appealed to enough people to get a lot of votes. Some played better live in the arena, while others worked better on telly. I would've been happy for any of the top five to win, even though my favourite, Austria failed to register with the public vote. The big five miss out on building momentum by only performing in the final. Ukraine's performance was one that would have benefited from repeated viewing as it was visually stunning. The people complaining about the voting system will no doubt complain about whatever replaced it the first time they disagree with the result.

Keep seeing comments online about last nights show being rigged so Sweden will host for ABBA’s 50th anniversary. Some people really need to get a better grip on reality 🙄

Keep seeing comments online about last nights show being rigged so Sweden will host for ABBA’s 50th anniversary. Some people really need to get a better grip on reality 🙄 It is reality… there are 5 people in each jury…chosen each year by broadcasters and labels… they should just cancel these nonsense juries. Only televoting… Maneskin would no have won ..if only juries…

For many reasons- too long to go into here- I didn't watch it.
All I saw were each contestant running on carrying their flag.
I couldn't help but think for Alicia Dixon, what a gig to get! I mean, literally, on the world stage.
And kudos to Hanna Waddingham for raising her profile even more.

Yes, and the exact reason I switched off from this garish spectacle about 10 years ago. I only watched this year to see how the UK staged it (with a particular interest as I work in the live events sector) and I was struck at just how resolutely AWFUL the standard of music and performance style was - dated as ever and operating in a different universe to contemporary pop music.

I can't BEAR it when camp and kitsch is too knowing and calculated - it becomes devoid of any charm or appeal whatsosever, to me.
