I'll be curious to see who plays Richard Burton.

Doesn’t look obviously commercial to me so far - a bit of a niche theatrical piece. What will make it commercial is the cast - let’s see who they’ve got. Burton was 39 at the time - Michael Sheen a bit old I suppose. For Gielgud, Alex Jennings ?

Maybe Andrew Scott as Richard Burton, and a bonus as he had played Hamlet. Agree that Alex Jennings would be a great pick for John Gielgud.

Maybe Andrew Scott as Richard Burton I very much doubt the NT will cast anyone whose lived experience is not being Welsh.

He isn't a big name, but Richard Cant would be worth considering for Gielgud

Don't have a lot of faith in Jack Thorne's writing, always too schmaltzy. Perhaps the iterative process to get here has ironed some of that out.

I don’t care what this is about or who’s in it. Sam Mendes. Jack Thorne. Booking this asap.

It would be lovely to have Ben Daniels back on stage again (and he’s also an NT favorite), and I guess given the great momentum he had for The Normal Heart last year, so maybe he’ll return to theatre more often. And Sam Mendes is a gem!!

Not sure audiences are going to be as fascinated as to how Hamlet was staged on Broadway in 1964 as the luvvies think they will

I think it'll do quite well. You've got a known director in Sam Mendes, a known playwriter in Jack Thorne and some pretty decent names. Has Tuppence Middleton done theatre before?
