BBC4 continues its Stephen Sondheim remembrance tonight with a double musical: 9pm - West Side Story 11.20pm - Into the Woods Last night was just wonderful .. my picks: Sunday in the Park with Stephen - never mind the Oxford stuff, keep watching for the first production of Into the Woods at the National: www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m0012txl/sondheim-at-the-bbc
I'd forgotten that Sammy Davis Jr piece ...
Bring a hanky.
Also, in a Face-to-Face interview with Bernard Levin he talks about Oscar Hammerstein's role in his life (as surrogate father to the teenage Sondheim).
Do you mean Sunday in the Park at the NT rather than Into The Woods? I found the programme fascinating and had not seen it before. I remember seeing the musical at the NT. Lovely to see a very young Philip Quast and Maria Friedman. I loved Sondheim at the BBC. Highlights for me were Eartha Kitt, Liza Minnelli and Adrian Lester. Not forgetting the 2 dames Dench and Lansbury. Looks as if the BBC had recorded Company at The Donmar. I'd love to see the full show shown in TV. It was a bit top heavy with West Side Story but then they can only show what they have achieved. The Face to Face programme was excellent. Sondheim was such a genius and love listening to him talk. Thought the interviewer was a bit abrupt though but I think that's how they did it back in the day.

I taped the BBC showing of the Donmar Company back in the day. I think it's still available on various streams, but would be ace to have it remastered and shown on BBC4.

I wonder if Jeremy Isaacs ever gets fed up of people telling him he looks like Bernard Levin? 🤨

I watched the new Dalgliesh. A very striking performance by Bertie Carvell, totally neutral, almost blank, very naturalistic with none of the cliched quirks we expect from TV detectives. I’ve no idea if it’s faithful to the character in the books but it’s really very good.

I'm only one episode in so far, but The Tourist on BBC1 has made a promising start.
Jamie Dornan, who we all now know, and Shalom Brune-Franklin, whose star is rising very fast.
The opening sequence is either a copy of, or homage to, Stephen Spielberg's Duel.

Tempted to binge watch all episodes but holding off to see how episode two pans out.

I've just watched "Their Finest" which turned out to be one of those really enjoyably pleasant BBC films. A nice way to while away 90 minutes. Available on BBC iplayer for the next few weeks. Plus you even get a bit of Bill Nighy singing!
Cast: Gemma Arterton, Sam Claflin, Bill Nighy, Jack Huston, Paul Ritter, Rachael Stirling, Richard E. Grant, Henry Goodman, Jake Lacy, Jeremy Irons, Eddie Marsan, Helen McCrory, Gaby Chiappe, Lissa Evans

I’m also enjoying watching The Tourist on BBC. I’ve seen the first 2 episodes so far, very tense and twisty, watching everyone through suspicious eyes!
I saw Their Finest when it came out at the cinema. A well-made typically British film though I didn’t really like the ending so that let it down for me.

I also watched The Finest which I enjoyed. Quire a "slight" film but an easy watch which was what I needed at the time.
Have watched first episode of The Tourist as well which, I think, is going to be a good watch.
Also last night I watched Anne. Quite a harrowing watch and Maxine Peake is superb in this.
Then tonight we have 4 Lives with Sheridan Smith which I'm looking forward. Guessing this will also be quite a hard watch.
Lots of good drama to start the New Year. Hope they haven't peaked too soon.

I finally got round to The Power of the Dog which I'd been saving as a 'treat' given all the rave reviews and oh god it really made me wish French and Saunders were still around doing their skits.

I’m currently watching the ITV series “Anne”. This is the story of Anne Williams whose son was killed at Hillsborough. She spent her whole life seeking justice for him. It’s a brilliant series but utterly heartbreaking. Maxine Peake plays Anne brilliantly. I defy anyone not to shed any tears watching this even though you know what’s coming.

I'm half way through Four Lives and I'm finding it gripping. Episode 2 has a brief shot of Hull's Princess Quay shopping centre, for those of us who aren't interested in Hull's very own Michael Gibson.

They also used some actual Barking locations which I recognised but places like Snaresbrook Court and Fresh wharf patrol base (where the Stephen Port was interviewed) were not the actual buildings. Looks there is another Sheridan drama coming to ITV soon about a family going on holiday to Turkey and things go wrong with their teenage son. Also had Michael Jipson in it. Sounds good but hope its not like Midnight Express as that film put the fear of god in me and I vowed never to go to Turkey.

We were really hooked by Four Lives. Had no idea it was a true story. Some absolutely heartbreaking performances from Sheridan et al and it was all so delicately communicated. I’m so pleased that they didn’t dramatise any lurid sex attacks, choosing to focus on the families struggle to get justice from an apathetic police force. I will catch up on Anne at some point soon.

The Apprentice is on with Amy Anzel as a candidate. Amy produced the musical version of Happy Days and featured on The Sound of Musicals on Channel 4 about 8 years ago

Amy Anzel should go far on The Apprentice. Didn’t she blag Henry Winkler into being a producer or consultant or something on Happy Days by ambushing him - on camera - at a book signing?

These last few mentioned are on my to see list but will have to be in a robust state of mind. Same here, I want to watch them but not right now, at the bleakest time of the year. I'm more in the mood for comedy and escapism. Toast of Tinseltown is wonderful and The Tourist is rather fun and they're both very sunlit which is a huge plus.

Have to say I watched Toast and just didn't get it. Just a man banging his head on a table for 5 minutes and lots of shouting. Not my idea of comedy I'm afraid. Might be an age thing.

Or a gender thing? I've tried with Toast and don't get it. But when I think of the comedies I've enjoyed recently, they've all been written by or starring women - Mandy, Alma's Not Normal, Back to Life, Bump, The Chair, Feel Good, Motherland, Starstruck, This Way Up, We Are Lady Parts and I've just discovered the Irish show, Finding Joy which is a ..... joy. Actually there are a few other comedies I've enjoyed - Back, The Cleaner, Meet the Richardsons, Staged and Ghosts.

Love Toast, although this season has clearly gone the "Episodes" route of setting things stateside.
can you hear me?

Comedy is clearly very subjective! I discovered Toast when a friend rang me to say there was a character in it just like us, and she was right.

I rather like Toast, only newly discovered and have only watched a few and doesn't make me immediately watch the next episode like other things do but now and again.
