Enjoyed the first two episodes of Around the World in Eighty Days. Some psychological stuff ( three travellers , all with ‘baggage’ ) which I didn't expect having been brought up on the David Niven version. Tennant doing what Tennant does best. And some dramatic moments. Nothing you can’t watch with grandma or the kids.

A Very British Scandal is shaping up well, which is good because I think Christmas TV has been rather disappointing so far.

I was rather disappointed by that. Once I spotted who wrote the script, I could see why. I really disliked her Christie adaptations and will avoid completely in the future.

I'm the opposite - her adaptations are dark and often bleaker than the source material but always interesting and she's an excellent storyteller.

For example I thought The Pale Horse was very poor and the story was unclear.

I agree, they don't always hit the mark but I still think she's one of our best screenwriters.
For a far more upbeat take on Christie, Evil Under the Sun is on BBC2 at 2.50pm - perfect background telly for a cold, wet, grey winter afternoon.

The best one I’ve seen was the Suchet Poirot “After the Funeral”, quite something, genuinely startling, though theatre enthusiasts have a small head start in solving it.

Sky Arts “Play in a Day” starts tomorrow, documenting a group of recent graduates performing in a short dance piece, play, and musical all written and rehearsed in 24 hours. James Graham wrote the play and Chris Bush the musical.

BBC4 continues its Stephen Sondheim remembrance tonight with a double musical: 9pm - West Side Story 11.20pm - Into the Woods Last night was just wonderful .. my picks: Sunday in the Park with Stephen - never mind the Oxford stuff, keep watching for the first production of Into the Woods at the National: www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m0012txl/sondheim-at-the-bbc
I'd forgotten that Sammy Davis Jr piece ...
Bring a hanky.
Also, in a Face-to-Face interview with Bernard Levin he talks about Oscar Hammerstein's role in his life (as surrogate father to the teenage Sondheim).

Do you mean Sunday in the Park at the NT rather than Into The Woods? I found the programme fascinating and had not seen it before. I remember seeing the musical at the NT. Lovely to see a very young Philip Quast and Maria Friedman. I loved Sondheim at the BBC. Highlights for me were Eartha Kitt, Liza Minnelli and Adrian Lester. Not forgetting the 2 dames Dench and Lansbury. Looks as if the BBC had recorded Company at The Donmar. I'd love to see the full show shown in TV. It was a bit top heavy with West Side Story but then they can only show what they have achieved. The Face to Face programme was excellent. Sondheim was such a genius and love listening to him talk. Thought the interviewer was a bit abrupt though but I think that's how they did it back in the day.

I taped the BBC showing of the Donmar Company back in the day. I think it's still available on various streams, but would be ace to have it remastered and shown on BBC4.

I wonder if Jeremy Isaacs ever gets fed up of people telling him he looks like Bernard Levin? 🤨

I watched the new Dalgliesh. A very striking performance by Bertie Carvell, totally neutral, almost blank, very naturalistic with none of the cliched quirks we expect from TV detectives. I’ve no idea if it’s faithful to the character in the books but it’s really very good.

I'm only one episode in so far, but The Tourist on BBC1 has made a promising start.
Jamie Dornan, who we all now know, and Shalom Brune-Franklin, whose star is rising very fast.
The opening sequence is either a copy of, or homage to, Stephen Spielberg's Duel.

Tempted to binge watch all episodes but holding off to see how episode two pans out.

I've just watched "Their Finest" which turned out to be one of those really enjoyably pleasant BBC films. A nice way to while away 90 minutes. Available on BBC iplayer for the next few weeks. Plus you even get a bit of Bill Nighy singing!
Cast: Gemma Arterton, Sam Claflin, Bill Nighy, Jack Huston, Paul Ritter, Rachael Stirling, Richard E. Grant, Henry Goodman, Jake Lacy, Jeremy Irons, Eddie Marsan, Helen McCrory, Gaby Chiappe, Lissa Evans

I’m also enjoying watching The Tourist on BBC. I’ve seen the first 2 episodes so far, very tense and twisty, watching everyone through suspicious eyes!
I saw Their Finest when it came out at the cinema. A well-made typically British film though I didn’t really like the ending so that let it down for me.

I also watched The Finest which I enjoyed. Quire a "slight" film but an easy watch which was what I needed at the time.
Have watched first episode of The Tourist as well which, I think, is going to be a good watch.
Also last night I watched Anne. Quite a harrowing watch and Maxine Peake is superb in this.
Then tonight we have 4 Lives with Sheridan Smith which I'm looking forward. Guessing this will also be quite a hard watch.
Lots of good drama to start the New Year. Hope they haven't peaked too soon.

I finally got round to The Power of the Dog which I'd been saving as a 'treat' given all the rave reviews and oh god it really made me wish French and Saunders were still around doing their skits.

I’m currently watching the ITV series “Anne”. This is the story of Anne Williams whose son was killed at Hillsborough. She spent her whole life seeking justice for him. It’s a brilliant series but utterly heartbreaking. Maxine Peake plays Anne brilliantly. I defy anyone not to shed any tears watching this even though you know what’s coming.

I'm half way through Four Lives and I'm finding it gripping. Episode 2 has a brief shot of Hull's Princess Quay shopping centre, for those of us who aren't interested in Hull's very own Michael Gibson.
