Is there any way to appeal Sunak's £200 energy bill loan he's forcing on us? I don't need it and I certainly will not be forced into debt, which I thought was illegal anyway. Ignore above, just read up on it. It'll be seen as an energy bill reduction or bill credit, so no popping it into a savings account. They'll just hike the bill later in the year to make up. I guess you could appeal to your energy provider?

Which is all well and good, this all assumes that energy bills will go down in 2023. Why cannot energy bills be subsidised by the Government clawing back fraudulent Covid grants?
Same with the NI rise which I am not completely against, but would also agree that people over the age of 65 living on more than the state pension or still working should still pay NI.

If we had a competent Government in the first place, they'd have had this on their radar and had an action plan in place ages ago instead of this panicked toilet-paper package.

Liz Truss being ripped to shreds by Russia for her stupidity when it comes to geography and history (and every other subject to be honest) should ideally put her leadership hopes in the non-recyclables, but hey, the Tory party hates an intellectual so it may have the opposite effect. Labour had the same problem when Emily Thornberry was shadow Foreign Secretary. Didn’t have a clue! The job seems to attract the most useless people, including Boris who I wouldn’t describe as stupid but just inept.

I'm no fan of Emily Thornberry but she's nowhere near as gaff prone as the bunch of scheisters currently in power.

I always thought that Foreign Secretary is almost a trail run for PM you are going all over the world representing the government. The Chancellor and Home Secretary are also the other big cabinet jobs but Chancellor is more fiscal based and lost the power to set interest rates to Bank of England whilst Home Secretary is a law and order role and Police Comissioners/Mayors have devolved some of their powers.
To be a good Foreign Secretary you need very good diplomatic skills and in the US the Secretary of State is always regarded as the top appointed job.

I have never been underwhelmed by David Lammy, I think he is excellent. David Lammy when he first got elected as an MP circa 2000 was the sort of guy who jumped out at anyone as a potential first black MP or someone who was destined for very high office. Been called to the bar at 22, first black Briton to graduate from Harvard was in a rock solid Labour seat and with the party in power. Despite Labour remaining in power for the next decade and him holding junior ministerial positions for a lot of these years he never made the Cabinet. The next decade through his own choice and because who the Labour leader was he remained on the back benches until 2020 when Sir Kier bought him back to the fore. He had rather become a forgotten MP as other younger stars elected well after him rose above him but I'd always feel Sir Kier would have a "use the best people available" and thus got David back into the sort of role I felt he merited. I may not agree with Labour on a lot of policies as my politics are right of Centre but the likes of David Lammy I'd put at the top table if I wanted the sharpest and a diverse mix in any government. Considering some of the clowns who held major positions for Labour post losing power to Sir Kier taking over it becomes even more striking.

Lammy's LBC show is fantastic, he took down a frankly racist caller quite handily with grace and decorum.

From Covid Downing Street anti lockdown parties, now the party is truly over.

He's saying he had a mandate from the voters. I think he's forgotten that in the UK we don't have a president and he was chosen by the party, not the public.

Johnson and his acolytes have been using that line about his mandate basically giving him permission to do anything he likes a lot and we're about to see it run into reality soon by the looks of things. How can he continue with no one left to fill goverment posts and more of the cabinet threatening to resign.
He conveniently forgets he was originally made PM by his party and not the public.
No surprise its come to his. The kind of man he is, selfish, amoral and only interested in his own position, was obvious to all for a long time. Shame that Tory MPs and voters were willing to ignore it for so long.

As Mayor he did very little and although he was corrupt the opportunities were less.
Also the situation was relatively stable and the major issues like austerity weren't that direct an issue for him.
I think he expected being PM to be similar except with more prestige but the level of focus needed and amount of scrutiny is just so much more.

It's going to be a nightmare for Carrie Antoinette to get all that £8000 wallpaper stripped by midnight.

Also, like Trump, his premiership has seen some of the biggest challenges this country has seen in living memory. They both got more than they bargained for when they came to power. As much as I hate Johnson I am scared about what's to come next. There isn't a good option across any party. It's such a depressing state or affairs.

I don't know if the party could stop him calling an election. He might lose but if a PM was getting it from all sides he puts a lot of the problem members out of seats and they wouldn't get all the extra jobs/opportunities a future PM may get?
People know I'm a Tory but I said a few months ago he needs to go for the sake of the party. 12 years we've been back in power only the last few with any sort of majority and that was dominated by Brexit and Covid.
I wonder if Mr Javid regrets resigning in Feb 2020 as a couple more year's as Chancellor and it would have made more impact and he'd have been at top of the queue to replace Boris.
