Alex doesn't have a chance, imho, it's either Danny or Leslie.

Unless the Danny fans and Leslie fans split the vote!

He's the only one I'm rooting for. Hamilton will pretty much sweep the board, but this one should go to the underdog. And Alex is fantastic in School of Rock. Of course, I'd also love to see School of Rock win Best Musical and Score, but I know that won't happen.

If the Tonys were the Whatsonstage Awards, we could tell who's winning simply by where they're seated.

But Alex Brightman missed SOOOOOO many unannounced performances before finally getting an alternate.. that kind of stuff doesn't sit well with voters... not to mention- this is all politics, it's usually about who campaigns the most- look at Daveed- he has a really good publicist probably- he was everywhere this last month. Lin is already everywhere.. Odom used to go on quite a few interviews but stopped recently for some reason... it's a shame- but it seems to be the way things work..
And the voters are also suckers for giving awards to those who have been snubbed/ long time veterans (see Kelli O'hara last year- I LOVE her and she should have won for Bridges, but last year's was Chenoweth's/ Beth Malone's in my opinion)..
Not to mention the Tony committee seems to be in favor of Hamilton breaking ALL records (which I also think is a shame, because some shows are more deserving in some categories.

My dream would be to see an "upset"- Dreamgirls/ Nine style, where the "best musical" one goes to a show other than Hamilton. Not because I don't think Hamilton isn't deserving (I love it dearly, and as a whole show it is actually deserving in the big category- it's the others where I think there competition) but because it would be SO shocking and hilarious to see the outcome of it in the community... (that and I'm not particularly looking forward to "rapped" speech after speech all evening)

Here's a new promo for the Hamilton, Hamilton and nothing but Hamilton... I mean... umm... what are they called again? I know Hamilton is a big drawing point this year for ratings (and I know you love the show, so I apologize in advance) but this is so uncool and kind of gross in my eyes. I like Hamilton as much as the next guy- but they could have mentioned the other shows, even in passing. Or a quick clip montage to go along with Hamilton.. I feel so bad for the other creators this year. Especially the Shuffle along team/ Sara/Steve Martin... I don't recall an Oscars promo going "this is Leo Decaprio's year yo- will he finally get the oscar tune in to check his reaction and maybe he'll go on stage".. you know what I mean- this isn't the Hamilton show...

I understand your point ShoesForRent but they only have 30 seconds and the Tonys usually do dire in ratings. I guess I can't blame them too much for wanting to get what they can out of this exceptional year for New York theatre.

Thing is, theatre's still pretty niche, so if you want to advertise your theatre awards show, then showing Bright Star or She Loves Me isn't going to attract anyone who isn't already interested. Using Hamilton's astounding popularity to lure people into watching the Tony awards who don't know who Tony was (Antoinette Perry, actor, director, co-founder of the American Theatre Wing) but have heard the other kids at school get all hype about this Hamilton thing... it might be a bit gross, but you can't really blame them.

Like I said- I understand that Ham is a big draw this year (agreed with what Patty and Emily said). I still feel really bad for all the people who, you know, created OTHER shows this season.. (the few who weren't scared away because of Hamilton)

I understand that but these types of year only come around once a decade or so. I think it's nice to have a year like this every once in a while, it certainly brings a lot of excitement.
As for the other new shows - Shuffle Along, Waitress and School of Rock are all doing really well at the box office so I doubt they're complaining too much.
I admit I would be disheartened if this was the same year as Fun Home and that was getting no attention, but personally I don't think any of the new musicals this year come close to what Hamilton is bringing and so I'm okay with that demanding most of the attention for now.

I'm sure they're not to happy at the thought that their deserved awards (Savion's choreo for ex) might go to Ham just because of the hype... And I think while Hamilton as a show IS exciting, this award show is not... for the first time I'm watchibg it for the plays (and Im so not a play person) because every musical award is known in advance, and a sweep is boring..
Also regarding the other shows- Shuffle had HUGE potential and everyone thought it would come to knock Hamilton of the radar- but that book is a mess. Waitress had nice potential plot wise, but the score is dull.. But the SNUBBED American Psycho was fresh and innovative, and I think it was exciting... The revivals were excellent this year.

No need to apologise, I completely agree! It seemed really insulting to the other nominees and I'm sure Lin doesn't want it this way.

I didn't like AP but I wont debate that with you, it's personal taste. I agree on the revivals, I was only referring to the new musicals. I don't think we can complain too much about who the awards are going to yet, the only ones to me that are absolutely sure to be locks are Best Musical, Score, Book, Director and Leading Actress for Cynthia. Also don't think if Hamilton won choreography it would be just because of the hype, it has incredible movement, just very different from huge tap numbers.

As far as I know, the one linked in this thread isn't the only Tonys commercial that's been airing -- I have seen at least one other which does mention other shows but still features Hamilton most prominently of all.

I usually watch the Tonys every year live (I find a link somewhere online) as I enjoy watching for surprises and seeing peoples speeches etc. But this year, I really don't feel like watching it. I can watch the performances and Cynthia's speech on YouTube but I am just, well, kinda over Hamilton before I have even seen it. It is really overhyped at the moment and the idea of it winning everything makes for very boring. That being said, I really don't expect it to win Actress, Choreography or Set. I don't think it will win Supporting Actor either as I think the three will split and Christopher Fitzgerald will win. But I can watch all of them on YouTube too.
