Probably in the minority but I'd love to see Hofesh Shechter win for choreography. I know he has been criticised for his work in Fiddler but personally I found his choreography beautiful - it's both folkloristic and modern and works great in this very traditional (no pun intended) show.

Yes, the choreography was one of the highlights of Fiddler. I don't really think you can go wrong in the choreography category. I have heard the most about Shuffle though.

Having just got back from a theatre trip to NYC I can for once have a view on some of the categories this year. Above all, I'm thrilled for Eclipsed. It was one of the strongest plays I've seen this year. The script is very good, bouncing from dark and upsetting to incredibly funny and light in a heartbeat and the performances of all 5 women are wonderful. I didn't see Ms Lange or Metcalfe but from the 3 I did see I think Lupita deserves the award. I'm also rooting for Pascale for Supporting.
Best play is tough, so it's between Eclipsed and KCIII for me. It's great to see so many London transfers nominated. Even though I missed him in NYC, I hope Mark Strong wins as well.
I loved Color Purple over there and hope Cynthia takes the prize (surely she has to?!). As for supporting, Danielle's role was the more deserving out of her and Jennifer Hudson.
I'm not too surprised about American Psycho, other than its lead actor, who is very good indeed and should have been recognised I think. I am glad I got to see both productions and the changes to the Broadway one were interesting (some I liked some I didn't), but the rest of the cast are weaker than the lead (and not as good as London for me).

I just listened to The Hollywood Reporter's Awards Chatter podcast with James Corden. It's 90% Late Late show (which is up for an Emmy) but he does talk a bit about hosting the Tony's - and gets very passionate about the fact that they don't get the same kind of press coverage as the Oscars, and how it's the best awards show in the world because of the live performances.

So, Hamilton to sweep the board? I'm sure having multiple nominations will split the vote in some categories. Could you please explain on the splitting the vote stuff? I've heard a lot of people discuss it but never fully understood it.

I've heard a lot of people discuss it but never fully understood it. It's roughly the same as the issue with first past the post as opposed to alternative vote. Each award is first past the post, but because you only get one vote it doesn't take into account second preferences. The vote splitting theory assumes that the Hamilton nominee fans will be drawn from the same pool, and the first preferences will be split among the same electorate.

Just to be 100% sure, if you have a load of voters who are Hamilton fans they will all have a different choice for who should win, is that correct?

As an example, a lot of people thought neither Josh Gad nor Andrew Rannells won the 2011 Tony for Mormon because neither got a significant number of votes more than the other, but Norbert Leo Butz won because he received more votes -- perhaps many, perhaps very few -- than either of them. We'll never know the totals for sure, of course, but it can happen when you have two (or three) nominees from the same show in the same category. The voters don't even have to be "Hamilton fans," necessarily, just fans of the performer's work in that musical -- enough so that they fell they deserve the vote. So it's entirely possible that neither Odom nor Miranda will win best leading actor in a musical.

Quick illustration: if you have ten voters choosing between Lin-Manuel Miranda, Leslie Odom Jr, and Danny Burstein, and you know that six of the voters love Hamilton passionately, then you'd think it safe enough to assume Lin or Leslie would win. But if three of the six go for Lin, and the other three go for Leslie, then the vote is split and the four who voted for Danny will ensure a Fiddler victory instead, even though they initially seemed to be the minority.

I am looking forward to the awards, and to see the performances particularly as some of them are expected to be brilliant and will be nice to see some of the Broadway shows represented. As much as I realise it is bound to win a lot of its nominated awards, I hope Hamilton doesn't win every category. Not because it doesn't deserve it, but because I don't want to be bored watching the show with just Hamilton going up.
That said, I can see other musicals winning in all four Acting categories, Choreography and Direction. Which, in my opinion, could see a few surprises.
Do we know at all which song the shows are all doing for the performances? Any rumours?

My predictions (not too knowledgeable on the plays so will leave those to more informed people).
The ones in bold are the ones I think are pretty much locks to win. Second most likely in brackets.
Best Musical - Hamilton (or Shuffle Along)
Best Revival of a Musical - She Loves Me (or The Color Purple)
Best Book of a Musical - Lin-Manuel Miranda for Hamilton (or Julian Fellowes for School of Rock)
Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics) Written for the Theatre - Lin-Manuel Miranda for Hamilton (or Sara Bareilles for Waitress)
Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical - Leslie Odom, Jr. for Hamilton (or Danny Burstein for Fiddler on the Roof)
Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical - Cynthia Erivo for The Color Purple (or Laura Benanti for She Loves Me)
Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical - Daveed Diggs for Hamilton (or Christopher Fitzgerald for Waitress)
Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical - Renée Elise Goldsberry for Hamilton (or Jane Krakowski for She Loves Me)
Best Scenic Design of a Musical - David Rockwell for She Loves Me (or David Korins for Hamilton)
Best Costume Design of a Musical - Ann Roth for Shuffle Along (or Paul Tazewell for Hamilton)
Best Lighting Design of a Musical - Howell Binkley for Hamilton (or Justin Townsend for American Psycho)
Best Direction of a Musical - Thomas Kail for Hamilton (or Michael Arden for Spring Awakening)
Best Choreography - Savion Glover for Shuffle Along (or Andy Blankenbuehler for Hamilton)
Best Orchestrations - Alex Lacamoire for Hamilton (or Larry Hochman for She Loves Me)
Totals:
Hamilton - 9 She Loves Me - 2 Shuffle Along - 2 The Color Purple - 1
My personal choices pretty much match up with my predictions except I'd have Jane Krakowski for She Loves Me win featured actress over Renée and Phillipa Soo for Hamilton win leading actress over Cynthia. Renée did a good job but didn't particularly move me and I think is getting a lot of the hype that she is because she gets to deliver 'Satisfied' which is one of the best and most complex songs in the show. Cynthia absolutely moved me with 'I'm Here' and the finale but nothing else she did in the show came close to that level for me. Phillipa I think pulled off something very difficult which is an incredibly emotionally stirring performance in such a subtle and nuanced role. My attention was on her every second she was on stage. However, I know both of those are extremely unpopular opinions!

The Astaire Award nominations were announced last night, with a three way tie for Choreographer with Andy Blankenbuehler, Savion Glover and Sergio Trujillo!

It wouldn't surprise me if choreography ended up being the closest race this year.

Looks like James Cordon is doing a carpool karaoke with a few Tony nominees. Definitely seen LMM in the shot but didn't pay much attention to everyone else and now can't remember haha. Either way really looking forward to this.

Completely bizarre to me that we don't get it considering some of the countries that do. I'll be in America anyway so I guess I shouldn't complain too much.

Quick question for our American members (or those who know): As I'm currently in the US (California), I'm planning on watching this year's Tony Awards ceremony live. However, I'm slightly confused by the announced starting times: The official website says 8/7c, so if I'm not mistaken, that'd be 5pm pacific time (PT). However, it also states "delayed PT", i.e. 8pm at the west coast after all?

(The only awards ceremony the West Coast gets live in the Oscars. But now the Grammys are catching up.)
