I wouldn't be surprised if it was the latter (go in hard a week before) unless they're making changes. Wonder if they'll open earlier now lockdown doesn't seem to be happening after all. I see people over on Tattle (where I absolutely don't normally hang out) speculating about replacing the cast. While I imagine that's more wishful thinking because they all loathe CHF, is that a real possiblity? Has it happened before?

I can't see why they'd switch the cast out just for the hell of it, though they may be forced to due to availabilities - depending on how everyone is contracted. Regarding the closure... This show has closed and re-opened more than I care to remember, and each time there's been speculation that they'll use the time wisely and efficiently to make the necessary changes to make the show work fully. Each time, they reopen with a couple of tweaked lines and possibly something major like a wig replacement . If they haven't felt the need to address the bigger issues every other time they've had a chance, I'm not holding out for anything more this time!

The cast is not the problem. They're all doing the best with the material they have. Should they want to improve the show, they're going to half to frantically darn plot holes and loose threads behind the scenes for the next month. And sadly I think we all know that is not going to happen.

I have heard very little good reviews for this show, I like a few songs on the soundtrack but most of the songs sound like something else.

I still don’t think we’ve had an explanation as to why this show, and only this show out of all of those in ALW theatres took the decision to close for such an extended period. If they’re not changing it (why now?) and it’s not covid (why not other shows?) then what? I mean, we can all have fun speculating about ALW, dummies and prams but these things are like tankers. They have momentum that you can’t just keep stopping and starting at will surely? Somebody must know something.

Presumably because this had the worst sales for January? I assume it was a financial decision to shut it down for the month rather than play to 80 people.

Been reading a few books on the machinations of Broadway as recommended over on the excellent theatre books thread. On Broadway it seems it’s not uncommon for shows to open and close on the same night /week due to poor sales/bad press etc. The cast seem to have little notice periods and are not privy to or involved in the decision making process Can someone explain the difference between there and the WE please? Why do shows seem to limp on here with half empty theatres (pre Covid issues) If Cinderella is really selling that poorly (regardless of a pandemic) or if the internal cast issues are insurmountable then is it even likely to re open?

That’s got to be a first then hasn’t it? Close a show temporarily because of not enough sales but with the intention of continuing later? When did that ever happen?

The break is very long, it also makes Cinderella look like it was looking for reasons to close early/pause. Especially when all the other shows are going to amazing lengths to carry on - getting old cast members, swings doing above and beyond etc.

Selling any pantomime-like title outside of the festive period is always more of a challenge.
As with much of ALW's recent behaviour around this show, his actions seem more about generating headlines than real positive action.
It feels like he was trying to get attention for the show in the hope that it might boost sales rather than really seeking to combat the marketing and other issues associated with the production.
It is possible that it will end up like Scrooge... a show that pops up for 2 to 3 months each winter and is gone again by spring.

Unless they add a couple of Christmas trees and some tinsel.

Mrs Doubtfire just did it on Broadway, I think? Seems to be on people's minds at the moment as a way to get struggling shows through unprecedented times.

To be fair, they don't have an existing pool of former cast members they can call on to keep things going, Les Mis style. I seem to remember they hired extra swings a few months ago before all the Omicron stuff so assume they don't have a lot of backup options if people start going down with it I've seen at least 4 of the cast post about being struck down since the show closed (including this week) so had it stayed open they'd still be having trouble now. I don't know what Jan sales were like but certainly the performances in the week it shut looked well sold to my eyes (with comparison to other shows I was looking at when trying to find a replacement).

Not being facetious here but going into year two of a global pandemic you’d think production companies might have planned for absences a little better and rehearsed in more swings and understudies? It’s not like this wasn’t going to happen at some point? There must be thousands of actors looking for work who could be worked in?

I think you only need to look at the sales of some other shows to know that it's going to be a very rough time for theatres in January. Just a quick browse shows Come From Away only about 1/3 sold tomorrow (with upper circle closed), Pretty Woman and &Juliet have barely sold anything. Poppins has also closed their upper circle. Back to the future only around half sold. Even Matilda is only looking around 1/3 sold for Weds and Thurs eve.

And how many of those seats would’ve been held by brokers and released back to the theatre unsold?

In any case, they've still not sold them.

I'll happily take advantage

Those theatres looking 1/3 full might be including tickets held by brokers if they’re not sold either by the agency or broker then the picture would look even bleaker?

ALW is behaving like he is under pressure to deliver a profit, rather than a cohesive 3 hours of theatre. If he’d rather close the show to minimise the loss rather than get offers going they are clearly nowhere near breaking even. He’s not looking at his product as the problem rather the circumstances in which it is operating. In any business that I have ever managed, I have always looked within my own four walls first rather than blame outside forces. Obviously COVID made it impossible for people to go to the theatre, but when they have been open it hasn’t been peoples first choice. We have discussed the reasons why ad infinitum.

It was re-written recently wasn't it? Was it any better?

It was re-written recently wasn't it? Was it any better? Not re-written, just a few line changes really, and a cut to the 'cinders reprise of everything' at the end.
