Going on a backstage tour of Theatre Royal Drury Lane soon! Any one been on it and know if we get to go on stage/see set? When I did this a few months ago we didn't go on stage but the tour was nicely timed for when the stage crew were testing the sets for the evening perfomance so we sat in the circle for a while as all the scenery came on and off the stage.

I'm really looking forward to my last 2 visits on 28 Dec and 5 Jan, but I'm so sad at the same time. This year has been hard for me and my family and this show has provided the escapism and lift that I needed. I have booked things next year which will be great, but I will sorely miss the joy and happiness that this show gives me from the first note to the last.

I did it last year and we disn't go on the stage Still a great tour though It depends if you are doing a back stage tour with the cast in which case you will go on the stage and see the set etc, however if it is just a Drury Lane tour then no you won’t. Hope that helps.

These past few months have been the toughest yet, possibly of my life with so much just continuously happening in my life. But this really has been a consistent good thing, I will miss it very much come closing.

Just received an email from BroadwayHD saying that 42nd Street is streaming soon.
Although they think Ashley Day is Billy Lawlor, so maybe they missed the memo?

Mark Shenton has tweeted (sorry I cant paste it here) that 42nd St is doing 8 shows in 4 days and is that even legal? He has hash tagged Equity. I know panto does this but it isn't as demanding as this show! The cast will be knackered!!

I know panto does this but it isn't as demanding as this show! The cast will be knackered!! I saw the schedule yesterday and thought it was gruelling. I think they should cancel a couple so they on top form for the last night. Especially as there is a large contingent from here going.

I’m sure it’s legal, why does he think it isn’t? Especially as there are plenty of cancelled shows on other days. And the cast are paid by the show aren’t they, so I’m not sure if they’d appreciate cancellations, particularly if there don’t have other work lined up?
Can’t imagine them cancelling. What about all the people who’ve booked and can’t reschedule? Or the coach parties?
Pantomimes do two or sometimes three shows a day. Circuses the same I think, although I suppose each act is only on for part of the show. Fringe festival productions (although usually shorter) are often on multiple times a day too. And holiday camp shows often do two shows a day (and have to travel from camp to camp too).
And it’s not that long a show. Compare that with something like The Inheritance and their 8 shows per week.

When shows do that many shows in a short time each cast member usually swings out for a show to give them a break. It keeps it fresh, the understudies go on, etc.
I know casts usually aren;t allowed to take holiday during the festive period but they are usually given shows off, coupled with days off for the actual holidays.

All contracts of decent sized shows has stipulated shows per week. I’d guess 42nd Street cast and crew are contracted for eight show weeks. The company get a day off and then do eight shows. Perfectly acceptable and doable. In previews they will have been effectively doing a two show day every day (rehearsals during the day, show in evening). Is it shame to have your last one on the end of that? Sure. Illegal? Not even slightly.
Oh and you aren’t paid per show, but per week (so if you cancel a show cast don’t lose out).

Also 42nd Street isn't doing nine shows for the last weeks unlike some shows.

I also notice there are quite a few shows now that add in an extra matinee occasionally.
For instance, The Book of Mormom adds a Friday matinee every few weeks.
So there must be flexibility in the contracts to allow for things like that.

Although the company was back to almost full strength, there was a new face in the male chorus for Getting Out of Town. 42nd Street is set in 1933, and this lovely gentleman looked like he was born in 1933, or soon after. I did wonder if, in addition to a complimentary glass of champagne, our good friend tonyloco had also been offered a small part! Whoever he was, and whyever he was in just that one number, good luck to him. What a show to be part of, however briefly. No, TallPaul, that wasn't me in the male chorus for Getting Out of Town in 42nd Street on Wednesday night. As much as I would love to be up there on that stage, I regret that my days of treading the boards are now behind me. And I was actually born in 1937 so I am four years too young to fit the description of whoever it was that caught your eye. But thanks for the thought! Visited tonight (hasn’t planned to be in London but needed cheering up). Report later but have an idea on the mystery man. I notice that Paul Knight joined the Getting Out Of Town procession, which he doesn’t normally do. He’d fit the older gentleman description. He plays Oscar, the pianist who is on stage for part of the show but isn’t all that visible. I’m guessing they were slightly short of people. He didn’t do anything else other than the normal piano playing. Could it have been him?

So, Rush tonight, central Row B. I’ve noticed the Rush tickets are getting further back although I still did quite well. Don’t know if it’s because the show is closing or because it’s the holidays, but best not to rely on great Rush seats or day seats being available for the last few weeks.
Not a perfect view due to heads blocking the centre stage (as well as the male couple in front sitting close together - one had the habit of turning his head to stare at his partner for a while - presumably to see if he was enjoying the show - but unfortunately the turned head kept blocking another big chunk of my view).
Luckily I know the show pretty well and could focus on the parts I could see.
The audience generally good. A few chatty people. Lots of people around who were obviously return visitors. Could hear one discussion about whether Bonnie or Lulu was better. Girl next to me quietly exclaimed her thanks when Clare Halse came on (didn’t like to tell her there’s a cast board). Someone else was asked if visit 26 was as good as their other visits.
Lots of covers:
Matthew Goodgame as Julian Philip Bertioli as Pat Mark McKerracher as Abner Alyn Hawke as Mac/Doc/Thug Lisa Dent as Annie
11 male ensemble, 22 female ensemble. Philip joined the ensemble for Plenty of Money and the first half of 42nd Street to make the numbers up.
And all 11 male ensemble got to bow, which is unusual. Luke George and Ryan Gover were away for those interested, so all three swings were on.
A good regular show anyway. Can’t be in London next week, but hoping to get back again before the mad rush of closing day.

I get the sense Alyn is getting real bored of going on for Mac. He is always sharing on his Instagram Story his #MacLife pictures and videos and looking constantly bored or frustrated waiting in the dressing room whilst the dancers are on for the big dance numbers. I'm not surprised considering he is a dancer and he is used to having bigger tracks both in this show and in American in Paris before. He does seem to go on all the time as Mac these days.

I don't suppose there's any way to see the cast list for specific performances in the past?
I am getting so confused here it's driving me insane.

Or does anyone here know who the understudies are for Julian? I believe: 1st cover is Matthew Goodgame - he’s been on a lot recently 2nd cover is Graeme Henderson - had really hoped to see him as Julian but I doubt it will happen now before the show closes I’m sure there must be a third cover, but no idea who and don’t think they’ve ever been on.

There's no publicly known 3rd Cover Julian. There has only been four people to play the role in this production in London: Tom, Norman, Grahame and Matthew. Grahame has been the consistent 2nd Cover but has rarely been on. I was lucky enough to catch him during the Summer and he was great in the role, despite just coming back from sickness. And obviously Norman and Matthew were 1st Cover during their respective runs as Pat, although Norman has been emergency standby a few times this year since he has left when Matthew or Grahame has been on holiday, but hasn't been on since he left the show officially in March.
