Well Steven Hoggett did previously win the Best Theatre Choreographer award in 2009 for Black Watch, so I guess the people who come up with the nominees (and John Tiffany, obvs) really appreciate what he brings to a production even if it's not a musical. Choreography snobbery can cut both ways, guys. Have to say this one is massively deserved in my mind. And I came out thinking it's some of the best choreography I've seen. Is it innovative and as complex as you might find in a musical? Probably not... But it does manage to get dance sequences in a Harry Potter story without anyone batting an eyelid. And it well and truly managed to set the pace of a five hour play to a point where it whizzed along.

Screaming with those nominations for Harry Potter! WTF with the conjoined noms for both musical categories? It's ridiculous! ''Aladdin'' and ''Lazarus'' basically shut-out, gosh! Also, The Glass Menagerie really rocked those noms, glad for them! I believe Riley and Jackson will get the awards for Actress, who's the favorite for the male counterparts?
Charlie should and likely will win Best Actor in a Musical. But I could also see it going to Andy Karl. But Tyrone is apparently a lot of peoples favourite but it is really a supporting role so he shouldn't really be in that catagory. I want Charlie to win though, as he truly deserves it for that performance and if Tyrone does win, though deserved, it would be annoying as he doesn't belong in that category and it would take it away from Andy or Charlie based on category placement.
Sidenote: I'm just gonna highlight the bit I am referring too and someone can edit it if they feel I am bringing down governments, but I hate that the whole quote keeps disappearing and I'm not gonna bother doing it again and again.
Judas is the lead role despite the show's name suggesting it's Jesus!

I really like the variety in the nominations as some shows only opened recently like the girls or glass menagerie but so,e closed quite a while ago and could have been forgotten like showboat, the flick, the threepenny, opera , Groundhog Day and quite a few more. Also this year it is quite difficult tomprodict who will win in each category and it could go to any nominee. Even though there are front runners there are at least 2 in some of the categories. We will just have to wait for the 9th of April to find out.

I'm pleased The Comedy About A Bank Robbery has got a Best New Comedy nomination. I don't expect it to win but it's lovely for Mischief Theatre to have got the nod for the 3rd year & 3rd show running.

Agree it is a rich to have the collective awards i.e Succour and Girls, they might as well had an award for this best interval ice cream seller, but then again it probably would have gone to one of the Harry Potter ushers anyway.

I'm curious to see what happens with supporting actress in a musical. Victoria H-B likely won't get it because no-one liked the show much. Possibly the same with Haydn. Rebecca would be my favourite to win, but Emma has now been nominated 4 times I think and is generally well-liked - but her character gave her so little to get her teeth into...
I think awards ceremonies are less for promotion and more just to give us things to talk about and conjecture wildly and baselessly over...

Perhaps if Gary Barlow had written it things might have been different.

When do the nominations for the best west end show get announced ? I think that's the name of it, the one where Wicked and Les Mis alternate the win every year if its already been announced then I'm slow and missed it somehow

Unfortunately they don't get individual acting nominations because the shows are so much ensemble pieces.

I adored Rebecca's performance but theres not too much meat in her role if i remember; gone after about 40 minutes into act 1 and back for that killer song in act 2, almost pulling a Grizabella there! Surely the amount of group awards this year (Our Ladies, Girls, the school of rock kids as the musicians? Which I do thin they deserve recognition for) warrant them thinking of creating an ensemble award? However I would also agree that Mischief would sweep it up they are so connected with each other!

Gina beck was ROBBED. Not happy about that.
The guy nominated for The Girls? Is that a joke? All of the Girls from The Girls being nominated - absolutely stupid.
What another bag of sh**e from the Oliviers.

Why do the Oliviers have such an inexplicable hard on for Emma Williams? What exactly is she doing that is award worthy in Half a Sixpence? She should only have one nom for Love Story (2011) and that's it. The supporting musical categories are so abysmal this year that of all years it warranted one single category for both genders, plus a couple of new ensemble awards.

Right I'm going through these properly now and they are beyond ridiculous.
- There is no need to limit to only 4 nominees for each category. It's actually insulting. There are definitely enough brilliant people each to year to be able to list 5 as nominees. And if there isn't, then what does that say about London theatre?
- Not nominating Trevor Dion Nicolas for Aladdin is completely bizarre. When he was the understudy on Broadway, many said he was almost as good as James Monroe Iglehart who managed to WIN the Tony, even against Broadway legends such as Danny Burstein. I mean, Andrew Langtree for Groundhog Day? I can't even remember what he did in that show.
- The whole 'outstanding achievement in music' category is, again, silly. How are you meant to judge the score of Dreamgirls against the 'gig-like rock vibe' of Jesus Christ Superstar!? Have a category for Best Score and be done with it.
- The ensembles being nominated as one is honestly making me angry. It's insulting to the individual women that have to go up against that and makes the whole act of being nominated or winning an Olivier seem so much less significant. By all means, have an ensemble category. But are they seriously implying that only 3 individual women managed to give outstanding lead performances in musicals this year? GINA BECK ANYONE?
- WHY don't they have a category for direction of a musical?
The Tonys already make the Oliviers look like a joke in comparison due to their high production values and actually airing the entire show live as it happens. The only thing that will redeem this for me is if Jamie Parker finally manages to win an Olivier, as he should have last year. I'm done.

A few thoughts - the play revival noms are utterly mucked up, This House is a transfer/return engagement, not a revival. Yerma is a new play not a revival. Uncle Vanya at the Almeida astonishingly forgotten, also for acting awards where Paul Rhys at the very least should have been nominated.
Many new plays were more accomplished than Elegy.
No acting noms for The Flick? Because they aren't 'names' I presume.

The supporting musical categories are so abysmal this year that of all years it warranted one single category for both genders, plus a couple of new ensemble awards. Are you insane?! Anyone who saw Mrs Henderson Presents would pronably agree she was the entire show and gave a knockout performance that was totally deserved of the win, let alone the nomination! If it weren't for Lara (who was fantastic, don't get me wrong!), Emma would of won last year, in an instant and rightly so! I wouldn't say the Supporting Actress in a Musical is awful, I would say the girls nominated is totally right and deserved. But I agree that the male side of things, it was probably one of the weakest I have seen in the past few years, and I am amazed that The Genie didn't get in, as he was really seen as the one to win, not just get nominated. I think Adam for Dreamgirls is pretty much the lock to win now.

I think we are forgetting the best part of the whole announcement though guys... Matt Henry looking nervous as hell and Denise Gough standing there so casual and laid back, with both not being able to stop raising a slight smile when friends of theirs are nominated.

The Tony Awards usually class show that haven't been on Broadway and is considered a classic as a revival so things like Cinderella, Violet and Little Shop of Horrors were nominated as revivals. The Wizard of Oz was classed as a revival despite having an all new book and new songs, Half a Sixpence I suspect would have been classed as revival rather than new musical.

I just watched the Broadway.com Live at Five episode from today and they actually laughed out loud at the fact Dreamgirls was considered a New Musical! I agree though, it should of gotten the Cinderella on Broadwsy treatment and been put into Revival. Just my opinion.

While I doubt it'll win, I suspect if it did then many producers wouldn't be happy with the fact a 35 year old show won that award over newer musicals and would probably lead to a change in eligibility rules.
