Ah, that makes sense of the word. I was trying to work out if it was some sort of portmanteu of super and f an but couldn't work out where the t would come from in that case. My knowledge of Eminem is, unsurprisingly, near-zero. I think it's the combination of stalker and fan. Could be wrong. That makes etymological sense too. (Can one use the term etymological about a very recent word?)

Do we know if Olivia will be on as Dawn all week? Olivia was in the ensemble at the matinee today. Would have liked to see her as Dawn though!

Got stalls J30-31. The queue was a lot longer by the time 10am rolled around! Ooooh those are good seats for day seats!! 👍 Have fun! Anyone know if you can buy solo day seats btw for Waitress or do they make you buy 2? You can definitely buy solo ones, a few people in front of us did while we were there. Loved the show, but I must say I hated the pie. Had salted caramel, ate about two thirds of it, then spent the next 20 minutes feeling ill from too much sugar.

Gotta be in town anyway for a mid morning meeting 👍 I’ve not tried a pie yet 😆

I'm with @baemax that this weird walk on part thing is a weird and potentially dangerous way of encouraging 'I'm the BEST FAN EVER' mentality. I mean we've seen the crazies out on the Jamie situation this week already...I've no strong feelings on the Kareoke existence itself, though personally think it belongs somewhere like Theatre Cafe or another venue. But its the competing to be the best fan and get closer to the cast that is...icky at best. It's not snobbery I will die on the hill of Waitress being a damn good evening out and a good piece of musical theatre....but that doesn't mean they're right on this one. Imagine if a show like Heathers or Wicked had such a competition. It would be utter carnage!

"It belongs at the Theatre Cafe?" . The whole point of the thing is to give the opportunity to the fans of the show to perform on a Broadway/West End stage and sing these incredible songs with the band (and sometimes members of the cast). And as far as I'm concerned Waitress is the only show who does it, and all parties involved seem to enjoy it, including the cast (the majority of them stay for it even though they don't have to), the band and the people who work at the theatre. This has nothing to do with the whole messy stans thing. The shows that have the problematic fan behavior like Jamie, Heathers, Bat etc are the ones who don't have cast album karaoke events.

I don't understand the karaoke hate.
I would never go to it because I can't sing and don't want to embarrass myself on stage in front of the cast, and I'm really not interested in hearing the public sing the songs.
However it sounds like everyone involved is enjoying them and we're yet to hear any incidents of bad behaviour taking place. I don't see the harm in holding them.
If Waitress had fans like some other musicals, I would understand the criticism but they don't.

Can I throw my two cents in?
I'm okay with the karaoke thing. It takes place after the show, so if you don't like the idea, just leave.
But this new cameo competition will potentially get ugly. As others have mentioned, the superfans are now gonna try to get in. Which means: a) crazy fandom fights; b) talentless people singing.

Nope nope nope nope nope, you couldn't be more wrong in your assumptions about me. I think culturally we're in a very dangerous place where the divisions between fans and shows/performers are far too thin for comfort. People who work on a show should be allowed to go home peacefully after a show - after maybe stopping by the stage door if they're a performer and if they genuinely want to - and people who love a show shouldn't really be afforded any opportunities that they can twist to interpret as "I am the Best Fan of This Show" (and believe me, that specific sort of fan is very capable of turning much smaller deals than "winning a one-night cameo role via the medium of post-show karaoke" into validation for their obsession). I mean, I can see an argument for maybe a separate event at a different venue - hosted by Theatre Café maybe? sell tickets to prevent possible overcrowding and give the money to a charity like Shelter? - but the way this has been organised just waves a whole bunch of red flags. I guess it does work better as a fun thing than as a marketing event though, at least, because I don't see *that* many extra tickets being sold for either the karaoke performance or the performance with the karaoke winner cameoing... (Also, in my experience, "stans" and "theatre snobs" are two very different types of fan, though the most extreme example of either is not someone I would feel comfortable associating with.) Some great points - I agree the fans/performers division is way too close for comfort these days and I think shows need to take steps to widen it really. Interestingly has been a massive problem for the current cast in Starlight Express Bochum, so much so that some of them have decided to leave at cast change for that reason (or so it's said on the German fan sites - I can't verify it). One "fan" started sending What's App messages to the boyfriend of the guy who plays Rusty. Starlight had to post messages on their official Instagram re "fan" behaviour. What was the most recent Jamie thing? So back to Waitress - cast karaoke bad idea IMO! Sadly this was always gonna be a show that attracted the nutters. Thank God CHF isn't in it is all I can say! Interesting no announcement for a replacement of KMP yet....

Define the state of young fangirls in one tweet. I keep thinking about this. It's my new religion. People like this need help. Her feed averages around 5 likes, theres the odd few tweets with 20+ but she's broadcasting like her reach is to hundreds of thousands. I wonder how many of the 2k followers are bots. Some people have become so dislodged from reality by social media it's really scary.

Some people have become so dislodged from reality by social media it's really scary. It is. I went to see Joanna Lumley at Brighton Dome recently and when asked what the worst change in society over the last 20 years was, she said without doubt social media - she thinks the psychological harm it facilitates is far and wide. And to an extent, I agree.

I for one am looking forward to the nasal offkey poorly-supported belting this will expose so many people to.
98% of the people taking part will be totally harmless, as long as the random losers who may have other ideas are kept in check by security etc. it should be all right.

I do feel sorry for the kids growing up with it. There is some serious delusion out there and it just seems to fuel so many mental health issues.

There is some serious delusion out there and it just seems to fuel so many mental health issues. It must be incredibly confusing to be a teenager these day, growing up not knowing any different. Trying to find yourself and work out whats going on, whilst being bombarded with the inner thinkings of everyone around you. There's no escape. The urge to validate yourself as (cue a Company quote) "somebody not some-body", means an unending struggle to stand out, so they imitate the influencers they follow. People now need to feel noticed and affirmed on every choice they make and activity they pursue.

Thank God CHF isn't in it is all I can say Like andrew has said, this really isn’t a show that attracts nutters. Show me any bad Waitress fan behaviour that has happened or fans being abusive to others on social media? There doesn’t seem to have been any from what I’ve seen. It actually seems like a really inclusive supportive fan base, as it should be. Same with Come From Away. The one time I went to stagedoor it was v respectful! Of course the show has some enthusiastic fans and some who seem to have seen it loads of times already, but is that any different than people here who’ve seen Come From Way or Company 10+ times? Maybe it’s just that some of the fans are more active on social media posting about their love of the show but what’s wrong with that? And if karaoke was a problem with fans or the cast, then they wouldn’t do it. Maybe it might be more of a problem with a show like Heathers (and I’m only basing that on what I’ve heard about the rabid fan following and not what I’ve personally witnessed tbf) but Waitress is not Heathers. And I doubt the competition will even cause much more than a tiny ripple to be honest.

"She is messy, but she's kind" It seems odd that that is sung by Katherine McPhee, who in every Waitress photo I've seen of her has that all-American, perfectly groomed look. Messy is about the last word I'd use to describe either her or her character.
