At the theatre this morning - at 8:20 only 5 in front. So day seaters, plenty of hope! Will report back with seats when we get them. Got stalls J30-31. The queue was a lot longer by the time 10am rolled around! Ooooh those are good seats for day seats!! 👍 Have fun! Anyone know if you can buy solo day seats btw for Waitress or do they make you buy 2?

I wonder how many bottles of wine the marketing team had consumed when they suggested this one?

Seriously? 🙄 The cast album karaoke is a super fun thing that they’ve always done since the show started on broadway, and the audience loves it, so I don’t understand anyone who can find that a thing to hate on! Imagine giving a theatre fan a moment they might otherwise never get to get up on stage and sing a song they’ve probably done millions of times with a hairbrush in front of a mirror - i think it’s a lovely thing! Also bringing the fans up on stage has given amazing moments like this .....

I mean, that's about as desperate as it gets... Can it just stop, pack up, and go?

I'm sorry but I don't get people loudly wanting a show to close. Just because you don't enjoy it doesn't mean other don't. I'd never say a show should close just because I don't like it or want something else in the theatre. Not least because these shows actually employ 10s or even hundreds of people who all would lose their job.

It's 1 or 2. They don't force you to buy what you don't need, luckily. Thanks! 🙌 I rushed for this once but it was for 2 tix and I know for some shows it’s a minimum 2 tix right, which seems grossly unfair! This is cute .... those Irish girls who got invited backstage by Kat and the cast did a video blog about it after and recorded some of the meet and greet. It’s things like this that make theatre really special for me - this girl went from listening to the Waitress soundtrack every day never thinking she’d get to see the show to going to being surprised with tix by her sister for her bday and then not only seeing the show but getting to meet all the cast! 😍

That's fair @andyh - I should probably not post in this thread really!

It’s like some people can’t bear for other people to actually enjoy smtg they don’t. Btw, Andy, was it you who was at the Waitress preview performance where they had that big on stage f*ck up with the pie? If so, this made me chuckle 😆

My friend said that in the performance she saw Kat accidentally pulled one of the stirrups off the doc’s bed during the Bad Idea reprise and they could barely hold it together! 😆

It does seem like people use any excuse to hate on it, be it tenuous ideological reasons, it’s choice of theatre or the failures of the marketing. Can we just enjoy it while we still have it? As Andy says, it keeps numerous people in work and has raised the profile of some very talented people.

What about the in-between, am I allowed to be embarrassed by cringeworthy and ineffectual marketing campaigns while still loving the show and wishing it would do well?

Your comment was “as if the cast karaoke can’t get any worse” .... why can’t the karaoke nights just be a nice thing that the cast and crew give their time to and the fans love rather than smtg to complain about! Like I said, this is smtg that’s always been done for the fans, and I think it’s a really cool thing. If it gets a few more bums on seats that night all the better for it. And how is it cringey to have a fun fan karaoke night?! Are theatre stans really that snobby?

Nope nope nope nope nope, you couldn't be more wrong in your assumptions about me. I think culturally we're in a very dangerous place where the divisions between fans and shows/performers are far too thin for comfort. People who work on a show should be allowed to go home peacefully after a show - after maybe stopping by the stage door if they're a performer and if they genuinely want to - and people who love a show shouldn't really be afforded any opportunities that they can twist to interpret as "I am the Best Fan of This Show" (and believe me, that specific sort of fan is very capable of turning much smaller deals than "winning a one-night cameo role via the medium of post-show karaoke" into validation for their obsession). I mean, I can see an argument for maybe a separate event at a different venue - hosted by Theatre Café maybe? sell tickets to prevent possible overcrowding and give the money to a charity like Shelter? - but the way this has been organised just waves a whole bunch of red flags. I guess it does work better as a fun thing than as a marketing event though, at least, because I don't see *that* many extra tickets being sold for either the karaoke performance or the performance with the karaoke winner cameoing...
(Also, in my experience, "stans" and "theatre snobs" are two very different types of fan, though the most extreme example of either is not someone I would feel comfortable associating with.)

And I don’t actually care what anyone thinks about it either, it made me happy and that’s all that matters. Anyway, fwiw I really like Waitress. I do wish they’d do rush tickets as I’d probably go back a couple of times to see this if that were the case.

dontdreamit surely singalongs and karaoke nights are completely different things though?? A singalong performance for a jukebox musical is a good way to cater to an audience who love Meatloaf, for example, without adding any extras to the performance, and I think it’s lovely that you could have a good time at something like that! Karaoke nights are ultimately quite different and are being used poorly for marketing at this point.

I'm with @baemax that this weird walk on part thing is a weird and potentially dangerous way of encouraging 'I'm the BEST FAN EVER' mentality. I mean we've seen the crazies out on the Jamie situation this week already...I've no strong feelings on the Kareoke existence itself, though personally think it belongs somewhere like Theatre Cafe or another venue. But its the competing to be the best fan and get closer to the cast that is...icky at best. It's not snobbery I will die on the hill of Waitress being a damn good evening out and a good piece of musical theatre....but that doesn't mean they're right on this one.

What is a "stan"? I've seen the word used a few times on the board recently but don't know what it means.

What is a "stan"? I've seen the word used a few times on the board recently but don't know what it means. This is the top definition on Urban Dictionary and I think it’s pretty accurate: A crazed and or obsessed fan. The term comes from the song Stan by eminem. The term Stan is used to describe a fan who goes to great lengths to obsess over a celebrity. “Person 1: Dude these kids have been waiting outside the concert since 8 A:M even though no one was lined up...” “Person 2: What a bunch of Stans”

What is a "stan"? I've seen the word used a few times on the board recently but don't know what it means. a "Stan" is a superfan basically. In theatre terms obsess over a production or performer, stage door most of their time, buys the cast gifts and treat them as friends rather than performer and supporter etc. I've seen it get to levels of following them home, buying them kitchen appliances, knowing their lives outside of the show inside and out. We've gotten to a point now where it's scary to see how some fans treat performers.

I was trying to work out if it was some sort of portmanteu of super and f an but couldn't work out where the t would come from in that case. My knowledge of Eminem is, unsurprisingly, near-zero.

The ‘I’m the Best Fan Ever’ mentality is nothing new and I don’t see how this makes it any worse. One only has to go to stage doors around the country to see it play out, or to read certain threads on this board for that matter.
I do think some on here will take any opportunity to have a go at this show.
