Has her official leaving date been published? I am going at the beginning of May, and would quite like to see her in the role. They haven't given an official date but I thought that it would probably be the 25th of May, end of the first booking period. I'd have thought you'd be safe at the beginning of May though because that's still just shy of 3 months. Thanks lewisv1733 for this. Looks like I will hopefully get to see her, which is good. Some friends of mine went to see it, and enjoyed her and the show so looking forward to it.

Unless they are heavily papering it From one of the special clubs you can join if lucky ... 😮 I have also been looking at the ticket plans for this - waiting for some dynamic pricing to kick in. Upper Circle seems well sold generally - a younger audience for this with less disposable income? Stalls and Circle look very poorly sold however. Yet all the reports on this board are that it's pretty full. So somehow they are shifting lots of tickets very close to the performances! Can't all be day seats and I've not spotted any discounts. So in summary I have no idea how this is happening. Is the Adelphi a good spot for passing trade? Surely not THAT good! Maybe the cinnamon aroma IS luring people in off the street lol. Having said all that, if you look a month or so ahead at sales, SURELY this must discount by the Summer? I got tickets last min on Tues afternoon as my friend wanted to go that night and there was quite a lot of availability in the stalls and dress circle, but upper circle was pretty much sold out. We got stalls tickets, but come curtains up the stalls seemed pretty full, and I couldn’t see too many empty seats, so yeah maybe it does do good last minute trade. Also, it’s a 1,500 capacity theatre, and it’s February, and that’s a lot of tickets to sell, so I wouldn’t expect a show like Waitress that is still in previews to be selling out such a large theatre, especially early in the week.

So I’d been waiting for this to transfer for nearly a year (I know many people were probably waiting a lot longer!) after discovering the cast recording last Easter. I can see why some find the music bland but I loved almost all of it from the first listen, I think Sara did an amazing job. I think the biggest surprise from seeing the full show was how funny it was. I know people had said it was funny but people also say the film is funny and that is more subtle humour and the occasional chuckle mostly from Joe’s lines. This is on the other hand had us laughing through basically every scene. I think for me that’s the main way that Jessie Nelson has enhanced the material.
Performances: Kat McPhee, as others have said, her voice is fantastic, one of the best I’ve heard live. That vocal rest seems to have done her a lot of good and her voice really suits these songs. For me if you just wanted someone to sing the songs, she’s an even better choice than Jessie Mueller. But I agree acting wise, she doesn’t quite cut it. I wouldn’t say I thought she was dead behind the eyes (or couldn’t move her face!) and she made Jenna a likeable and believable character but the problems arose with the “deeper” scenes in the second act. I think if Waitress was just a rom-com about a girl having an affair with her doctor and making some pies, she’d be absolutely fine, but it’s so much more than that. It’s the story of a woman who’s been abused emotionally and probably physically for who knows how many years and is really reaching the end of her tether. Her She Used To Be Mine didn’t move me to tears, whereas JM’s did just from the first few listens of the cast recording. She just seemed to be singing it, which was still a treat to hear, but not quite what I wanted from the song, it really needs that acting through song that JM brings in spadeloads. She still got an extended applause for the song though, so obviously most of the audience disagree! But overall she’s a good performer and I’m glad she’s come over for a little run, I think the poor girl gets some unnecessary stick sometimes! Marisha Wallace was probably the highlight of the show, as I expected. She was sensational in Dreamgirls and maybe even better in this. Comedy is definitely her thing and here she has so many funny lines. And then she really showed everyone exactly how it’s done with her solo number, it really is a showstopper! What I love about Marisha is how hard she clearly works, she has this beautiful smile when she’s up there on stage, something I noticed in Dreamgirls, and you can see how much she enjoys what she’s doing. It’s hard not to be invested in her performance, she basically forces you! I think her work ethic is incredible and you can really tell she never takes any of her lead roles for granted, I hope we can keep her in London for many more years! I loved David Hunter, so funny and endearing in all his scenes. The chemistry between him and KMP is also great. It did sound like he maybe struggled a little bit with some of the higher bits of the score but he still sounded great and it’s early days in the run. (Also he is very VERY good looking! KMP is so naturally beautiful too though, I guess it’s very easy to see how these characters fall for each other.) I didn’t like the sound of Laura Baldwin’s voice on the recordings from rehearsals but live she sounded really great, and she’s so right for this part. Her solo number maybe was a little OTT but still very well performed. From seeing the film before, I thought Dawn would be the bigger part but it’s Becky who steals the limelight more really! Jack McBrayer, hmmm. I was physically cringing through the first half of Never Ever Getting Rid of Me, his singing voice really can’t be described as anything other than AWFUL! He is just naturally funny though, and the audience loved him, and I have to admit I did too! I just hope that they cast an MT performer who can actually sing Ogie’s song next, as I’d really like to hear it properly. Peter Hannah great as Earl, there’s not really much you can say about the role. You’re supposed to hate him and he definitely made us do that so job well done. His voice did sound a bit dodgy in his solo, maybe he was just having an off-night. Stephen Leask also gave a nice performance as Cal, him and Marisha bounced very well off each other I thought. Shaun Prendergast was good as Old Joe, even though I think he’s a tad young for the role, he’s more of a “Middle-Aged Joe”. I think Keri Russell and whoever played Old Joe in the film had a lot of natural chemistry and the man playing him was so perfect in the role that it’s hard for me not to compare the two. Shaun still did very well though. Last, but definitely not least, Kelly Agbowu is HILARIOUS as Nurse Norma. She has quite a few great one liners in the second act and she really is quite the scene stealer. I’m sure she’ll be a great Becky when she goes on for Marisha.
I might come back with some more comments later because for now this post is way too long and probably boring everyone, sorry!! This is just one of my favourite shows so I have a lot to say about it😬

Has Kat's face changed expression yet? Jeez, what is this, high school? 🙄 Some of you guys are just coming across as petty and b*tchy now. And for the record, Katharine’s face seemed perfectly fine when I saw her in the show, with all the suitable emotional expressions (and I was close up also) but even if I did have opinions about her’s or any other performer’s personal appearance I wouldn’t be making them here because it’s disrespectul, and as someone who has struggled with body image issues since being young, it’s borderline bullying. AND it’s against these forum rules, if they actually count for anything? ..... “5. Be respectful of theatre performers and creatives. Criticism of their work is allowed but hurtful comments on personal appearance, family or other matters deemed "private" is not.” I’ve recently moved back from NYC to London, and when in NYC I was an active member of the broadwayworld boards. There was a big drama there where members were personally attacking or negatively commenting on Patti Murin’s health (and a lot of it was out of order), and Patti publicly responded, and it became some big drama where lots of members were suspended or banned. It was a toxic atmosphere and I’m glad the mods finally clamped down on it. I’m not saying that it’s like that here, because it’s isnt, but reading this Waitress thread just reminds me of the same type of mob mentality where it becomes some sort of game by some (not all obviously) to drag a performer or other posters down, and then it all just gets out of hand. And I apologise because I don’t want this post to result in some long drawn out discussion about what I’ve written, because that wasn’t my intention. I’d just appreciate it if, going forward, people just think on a bit before posting hurtful personal comments about others, and don’t. Thanks.👍😍

It’s definitely noticeable to me how much stronger Kat’s voice sounds here in London than in NYC, and I thought she sounded fantastic in NYC! But it seems on another level here. I guess it really goes to show how important it is for performers (if they can) to take that time to have proper vocal rest and look after their voice, and heal it. I do personally disagree about Kat just ‘singing the song’. I find her SUTBM to be really emotional (with a lot of light and shade) and both times in London have sobbed during and after it, especially at the end when Kat herself broke (I gotta say she does a great job of shedding lots of real tears on stage lol). Kat’s for sure a more nuanced and subtle MT performer than say Jessie though (who I saw as Jenna on broadway) and maybe that doesn’t resonate with some so much, but I think that’s why I enjoy Kat’s Jenna portrayal, because it’s so realistic to me in showing a woman who has been quietly broken down to a shell of herself after years of abuse. Oh wow, I didn’t realise that Kelly was the Becky understudy lol! I don’t really know how strong her voice is but I’d love to see her take on Becky, because she’s absolutely killing it with the humour as Nurse Norma. She probably got the most laughs out of anyone! Whilst I think Marisha is a little OTT as Becky at times - the “keeeeep I cominggggg” line for example lol! - I love her and she’s fab in the role, and I Didn’t Plan It was pretty awesome. I agree that Shaun is too young to play Old Joe. At the least they should have changed the year when he mentions a girl he was seeing in 1948 or smtg, because there’s no way he’s 90 years old or so, if that’s what they going for! I’m really torn about Jack McBrayer. Yes he’s funny but the poor voice in a show full of killer voices really does stand out like a sore thumb. Also maybe I’m spoilt because Chris Fitzgerald as Ogie is the ultimate Ogie and I’m just comparing him to that, and that’s not gonna turn out well. I did like that he changed up the Ogie routine quite a bit from broadway too .... pretty sure the comb bit and the dove in the flowers is a new thing lol!

Obviously there are tactful ways of saying things, but from seeing the show and Kat on Sunday Brunch, that is clearly not quite the same face she had five years ago. It is stating a fact to say that it impacts directly on the quality of her performance. I wasn’t that close, and just saw that altered puffy face thing that many ladies have now, just not in their late 30’s, and not if they need to emote through it. And it’s a crying shame because she was always way hotter than Megan Hilty’s character in SMASH to me. This is a performance issue for me, nothing else.

Yeah I guess with a song like SUTBM so much of it is influenced by the moment the performer is in, and whether it be Kat, Jessie, Sara or whoever, some days they’re just gonna be feeling it more or be more emotional than others. For instance this Tuesday Kat seemed more emotional on stage than when I saw it a week or so earlier, although interestingly it was actually the scene where she told Earl to do one after giving birth where she was shedding the most tears! I guess it’s why Sara was so p*ssed recently with that audience member who was recording her with their camera during SUTBM and it really threw her out of the moment! For an extreme example, my friend saw Waitress on Broadway with Kat as Jenna last summer soon after she came back from her dad passing away, and said that Kat was crying so much before the song that she just had to sit on the sofa for ages trying to compose herself before she was able to start singing! 😰 And I guess a lot of it is also down to how we as the audience is feeling in the moment too. I guess it’s like what Andy was saying, how he felt like the muck up early on with the pie kinda threw him off for the rest of the show! I’ve seen Waitress 6x now (Jessie x1, Sara x1, Kat x2 in NYC, and x2 in London) and each show has had a different energy and I’ve had a different emotional reaction every time. I love that about live theatre!

Just saw this Sunday Brunch tweet, with a clip of Kat talking about the difference between US and British audiences. It’s funny she mentions they’ve not been able to get the audience here to react to I assume what she means is the scene where she tells Earl to do one, because I noticed that too! Everytime I’ve seen it in NYC the audience has whooped and cheered, but over here it’s more like the audience is being all British and reserved and doesn’t know whether it should cheer or not, even though it wants to haha! That said, I think the audience here (at least the 2 shows I’ve seen) has been more into the humour of the show and more enthusiastic than in NYC, but I guess a lot of that is that Waitress here is still so young and shiny with lots of enthusiastic theatre goers watching it right now.

I'm pretty sure the audience did cheer that scene on Wednesday night? I'm sure i remember that.
I think there is something about this theatre because the only other time i've felt this conflicted about a show was Kinky Boots the first time i saw it. Similar thing of really looking forward to the show for so long and then coming out wondering if it was everything i wanted it to be. Though i ended up loving Kinky Boots and it's one of my fave shows now so that ended well. I think Waitress could go the same way too.
I also think as well that Waitress was one of the first shows i've seen since CFA and CFA was one of the best experiences of my theatre going life so maybe anything that came quickly after that would have had an uphill struggle to impress me as much.

the producers have opted to cover her forehead in latex and pounds of makeup to blend that latex with her skin I'm no expert but I'm pretty sure stage wigs aren't made on latex caps - even if the hair itself is, the part that joins with the skin is some sort of fine netting so that it blends well. You can often see the netting if you're sat close enough in a theatre.

If you were near us then I do apologise for the occasional sweet bag rustling from my mum and the confusion we caused at the interval when we asked the women next door if they wanted to move to the empty seats next door so we could all sit closer to the middle!

Btw, i meant to say, they only had the apple pies available on Wednesday! I was so disappointed! I was going to go for one of the other flavours. Anyway, i still bought one, it was quite nice but not really a pie is it. Some bits of apple in cinnamon with a tiny bit of crumble at the bottom. Still, i like to have the full experience when i see shows and getting a pie at Waitress seemed the thing to do. The jar is nice little keep sake as well.
