If you buy a mid price ticket, a programme, a pie and an interval drink from the “only doubles served” bar what’s that totting up as I wonder?

It’s a bit of a cheek I think. The bar in the foyer has a sign up at the back saying “we only serve doubles - see price list”. No doubt the staff will point at that when the unsuspecting punter recoils at the price. I made my excuses and left.

Nope. Missed them all.  It was very crowded, though, so my aim was to get through as quickly as possible.

This is actually disgusting.

Does anyone know who to complain to about this? What a disturbing practice to force upon people who might want a spirit drink.

They surely have to serve singles if asked though, otherwise it's forcing people to drink something they don't want, which I can't imagine is tolerated given it is alcohol. I don't usually drink doubles, so I'm very tempted to see if I can get a single when I go to see this, and will complain if I can't!

Many restaurant, hotel and theare bars are doubles only. Hospitality relies on a guarenteed income to survive, and this is just another tool in the arsenal.

Just a musing I had in a chat with another board member; why on earth isn’t Sheridan Smith taking over in this instead of doing Joseph? All of the people defending singing through acting etc over on the Joseph thread; this is a prime example of where her lovely but limited voice could shine. Her SUTBM would be up there with Dame Judi’s ‘Send in the Clowns’. Too pricey for the Weisslers?

Hi! Just a quick seating question I can get a seat in the dress circle b34 for next week. It looks to be restricted, I just wondered if anyone had sat in there for this production and how the view was? Theatremonkey site has it listed red. Just wanted to check it wasn't crazy restricted.

I would appreciate the opinion of a qualified lawyer, but having done a little research this morning, surely The Licensing Act 2003 (Mandatory Licensing Conditions) Order 2010 applies.

"5. The responsible person shall ensure that–

(a)where any of the following alcoholic drinks is sold or supplied for consumption on the premises (other than alcoholic drinks sold or supplied having been made up in advance ready for sale or supply in a securely closed container) it is available to customers in the following measures–

(i)beer or cider: ½ pint;

(ii)gin, rum, vodka or whisky: 25 ml or 35 ml; and

(iii)still wine in a glass: 125 ml; and

(b)customers are made aware of the availability of these measures."

My interpretation is that if a theatre is serving spirits from an optic, and a customer only wants a single, they must be served a single. 

That statute isn't entirely clear, but I agree with you. They could try to argue that it means they must serve either 25ml or 35ml but not both, but I think the fact that there are two measures specified whereas only one is given for the other categories of alcohol indicates that they must be willing to serve both measures.

I'm not a licensing specialist though.

I don’t know if all of the bars in the Adelphi are doubles bars? Maybe they get round the legislation by directing people to a different part of the premises where they can buy a single?
