Saw this last week. Having seen the Broadway production, this show is screaming for someone who is actually good to play the role of Ogie. Jack is only funny because the writing is funny, his voice is dreadful! The script refers to him as an 'Elf' yet he is taller than most of the cast. BAD CASTING!
That being said, the rest of the cast are incredible. KMP is doing a great job, Marisha is also briliant. The stars of the show for me are Laura Baldwin and David Hunter. Laura is the perfect Dawn. The three ladies work really well together but she was the standout. And David Hunter is charming with that gorgeous voice.
I've heard it isn't doing very well and likely to close later this year but I hope some good reviews and possibly some awards should keep this open over a year.

Well, I think going in with low expectations made me really fall in love with this show, which is the exact opposite of what I thought would happen.
The theatre smelt a lot like burnt coffee and not a bit of pie, was already seeing red lights. But around half-way through Act 1 I realised I was incredibly invested in the characters, enjoying the score and the choreography. KMP was amazing, although her forehead didn't move a great deal I still think she done a fair job. Marisha Wallace was great as Becky, and she really did pull off her big number. I loved Laura Baldwin as Dawn, very well acted, although felt her big number was fairly repetitive and boring, I'd say it was the only number I found myself drifting as it just felt it was never ending! David Hunter did a lovely job as Dr and I must echo what every else has said about Jack McBrayer; an incredible comedic actor but really cannot sing. Peter Hannah made a great horrible Earl, and special mention to Kelly Agbowu who was fantastic as the nurse.
I really loved certain elements of this show, the little pie cabinets either side of the stage was a great touch. The knocked-up song was a highlight. I don't know why I just didn't expect this to be so funny, I think knowing a few themes of the show I thought it would be quite serious but no, nearly the polar opposite. I thought the set did a nice job- Jenna's house was claustrophobic and horrible being so dark, and then the diner is full of light, with the blinds up! I also thought that having some of the band sat in the booths was genius. I initially thought it was a stagehand and they had a headset on, but it turns out it was the pianist, who I imagine is the MD.
My Grandad absolutely loved this show which I really did not expect. He cried during She Used To Be Mine and was straight on his feet at the end, I couldn't quite believe it! He goes to the theatre quite often but I find he either hates or loves shows- this, of course, the latter. As soon as we walked out he said he was going to bring Grandma to see it! That's what I think will be a good influence with this show, people will tell their mates/family to see it, good word of mouth.
The house looked full to me and considering it was Monday wasn't too bad either. I really hope this show proves to be a nice runner here, it wouldn't surprise me if the critics get onboard with this one, which would be nice to see. I would imagine coach trips and mother-daughter pairings will also boost this shows sales. I wish it a successful run, hoping it sticks for a couple years, IMO. Will be interesting to see who they stunt cast in this, it's quite a sing for Jenna, can't just be anybody off of Eastenders!
Laura Michelle Kelly was in tonight, probs just seeing whilst over here, but made me think she'd make a cracking Jenna. Jenny O'Leary was also in tonight, supporting Olivia Moore I imagine. Also, give me Shoshana Bean in this role now!

Also, give me Shoshana Bean in this role now! She sang She Used to Be Mine at her concert on Sunday (in the original key rather than the lowered one, I believe) and made a comment along the lines of "shows I didn't get" - which I took to mean that she went for it. Agree that she'd be good though, she's a wonderful performer and has such beautiful control of her voice.

It would be good to see Laura back on a West End stage but if she is doing well on Broadway and big US tours then it would need a good role to get her back.

My turn at the diner tonight, unbelievably excited. This is one of my favourite shows and it feels like I’ve been waiting decades for it to come over!

Has her official leaving date been published? I am going at the beginning of May, and would quite like to see her in the role. They haven't given an official date but I thought that it would probably be the 25th of May, end of the first booking period. I'd have thought you'd be safe at the beginning of May though because that's still just shy of 3 months. I was listening to the recent Anna Faris podcast and Kat McPhee was a guest on it and she said that she’s contracted to May on Waitress but didn’t give the exact end date in May, but said that she’d consider extending it from there, so I don’t think it’s set in stone yet. If Lucie Jones is taking over from Kat I have no idea what her contract says either and whether the date of her joining date is subject to any extensions Kat may make.

Interval now and there was s pretty bad mess up early on. There was a scene where Earl first comes to the diner to see Jenna and is served pie but nobody could find the pie....so there was a good minute or two of KMP flailing around not knowing what to do and and eventually they had to break the fourth wall and improvise a bit with some funny comments about the situation before Dawn took the initiative and made a comment about getting the damn pie and going off stage to get it. This whole thing went on for a good 4 or 5 mins. They got the pie and the scene could carry on proper but they never really recovered for the rest of the scene then. It was funny but not really what I wanted for my first time seeing the show.

I saw the matinée performance of this yesterday and really enjoyed it. It’s really charming, fun and life affirming. Katherine McPhee made a perfect Jenna; her voice is superb and I didn’t see any problem with her acting. Her chemistry with David Hunter’s character was believable and sweet. I enjoyed Marisha Wallace and Laura Baldwin’s performances; Marisha’s solo in the 2nd half was superb. A few of the jokes fell flat and I just didn’t like one or two others, but there were quite a few funny moments overall. I agree that Ogie’s voice was weak but Jack played the character really well overall. Personally I think the earlier criticisms re plot points are a bit of a reach- I didn’t think the issue of domestic abuse was dealt with inappropriately at all and the scene was set for these things- in no way was it meant to be funny and the audience reaction was appropriate and fitting. Lots of shows have darker moments within a show which is otherwise upbeat. The treatment of the issue wasn’t flippant in my view. As for the ‘stalker’, I honestly thought the criticism was a bit silly/unnecessary after seeing the show and the interactions between the characters. There are bigger plot issues in other shows which got a free pass on the forum so I’m not sure why this was singled out. I can appreciate that stalking is not funny or fun but I don’t think anyone could honestly say that the character was menacing in any real way, particularly considering how the relationship develops. He was an object of fun rather than a threat. The audience reaction was effusive (immediate standing ovation once the bows started) and I can see it benefiting from positive word of mouth, albeit maybe not on this board. It’s a fun, sweet, mostly light hearted, uplifting show which is well acted and staged and the score is catchy and upbeat. I think the comparisons with Come From Away are a bit pointless but seeing as that’s whats been done in this thread, I would book to see this again before I’d book for CFA (saw it in Dublin before it transferred) mostly because I found the score more memorable and I will revisit it on Spotify. The material isn’t as ‘worthy’ but I enjoyed this more. I feel the same about the Ogie / Never Getting Rid of Me stuff tbh. I totally get if people feel differently, but I didn’t find the song offensive given the context, and at the end of the show I feel like Ogie and Dawn have the more ‘normal’ and grounded relationship of anyone! I saw the show again last night with a friend and I think even in a week it’s so much stronger (other than Jack McBrayer’s singing obviously!). It really is a great cast, and the 3 leading ladies were just terrific. Kat’s SUTBM was unbelieveable and just keeps getting better and better - just give me her voice already! And I think Laura is really growing into Dawn. Perhaps Marisha could tone down her Becky a little bit, but she’s going for BIG so I guess it works, and her I Didn’t Plan It was pretty flawless! The audience also went crazy for the Act 2 Bad Idea reprise, and it’s definitely the most I have laughed during that scene haha! I also feel like a lot of the jokes actually seem to work better with a British audience, when I thought the opposite might be true.

Must be a big fan of the show, or Kat, or both! 😄

I saw it this afternoon and loved it! I didn't find anything offensive that others have mentioned. After KMP's She Used to be Mine, several people leapt to their feet - at least six in front of me, and I was only in the 4th row (have to say, it was very, very good). Full standing ovation at the end. Stalls and Dress Circle looked full, but couldn't see if Upper Circle was open.
It seems to have a cult following already. Several people "in the know" and whooping at (to them) appropriate moments.

As long as they were respectful it’s all we can ask for. I think I’d like to see it again at some point but not really until a cast change to give it a slightly different energy.

So just out from it. I think I need to take a bit if time to collect my thoughts. I'm not quite sure about this one. It's not a show I've come out instantly thinking was great but I did enjoy it. I think the incident in the first act has made me have a more messy opinion of it that it probably deserves. I do think I will come back when Lucie Jones is no doubt playing the part though.

I have many thoughts to share on this but for now I’ll just say that it was everything I could dream of and more. Loved loved LOVED it. I was in tears by the end, just so grateful to have the chance to see the show live. I really hope sales pick up because this really deserves to do well. And yes that pie flub really was a DISASTER but it was quite hilarious and just fitting with what a mess Waitress is behind the scenes all the time!

Is there an advice thread? I have a decision to make between this show and another and I don’t want to ask in either thread in case of bias haha.

Considering they are rotating stacks of pies literally at both sides of the stage, with opening windows so you can remove the pies, I'm not sure why one of them didnt just go and get one from there!

Upper Circle seems well sold generally - a younger audience for this with less disposable income? Stalls and Circle look very poorly sold however. Yet all the reports on this board are that it's pretty full. So somehow they are shifting lots of tickets very close to the performances! Can't all be day seats and I've not spotted any discounts. So in summary I have no idea how this is happening. Is the Adelphi a good spot for passing trade? Surely not THAT good! Maybe the cinnamon aroma IS luring people in off the street lol. Having said all that, if you look a month or so ahead at sales, SURELY this must discount by the Summer?

I got tickets last min on Tues afternoon as my friend wanted to go that night and there was quite a lot of availability in the stalls and dress circle, but upper circle was pretty much sold out. We got stalls tickets, but come curtains up the stalls seemed pretty full, and I couldn’t see too many empty seats, so yeah maybe it does do good last minute trade. Also, it’s a 1,500 capacity theatre, and it’s February, and that’s a lot of tickets to sell, so I wouldn’t expect a show like Waitress that is still in previews to be selling out such a large theatre, especially early in the week.

I'm still unsure about this after sleeping on it. The show seemed kinda messy to me and I know it's previews bit it's a couple of weeks in and it's an existing show. Some of the voices on show were not the strongest, we know about Jack, who indeed was very poor, but the guy playing Earl was cracking a lot too and some of the ensemble harmonies were t the best either. I struggled to understand a lot of what was being said and sung, was this their diction or the sound, I don't know. I'd say I didn't really know what was supposed to be happening in a good 30% of the show, some of it was weird and I just didn't get it. A lot of the humour I don't think really landed either. The moments where characters were randomly picked up and paraded around, i mean was that supposed to be funny or serious or what? The audience was laughing in these moments. David Hunter was good but his accent dropped out a good 80% of the time. KMP had a great voice but I missed something from her acting, it seemed kinda going through the motions. I enjoyed Marisha a lot, her big number was a highlight. This is probably the most negative sounding review I've ever given on here but I think it's a bit harsh, I did enjoy it but I think the problem was I really wanted to love it more than I found it and I do think that the bad mess up and stop early on probably didn't set the show up well for me and gives me a slightly harsher feeling than it deserves. I do think I will give it an other go, especially in a few months where we might have some different cast to watch.

I actually felt that the ensemble and harmonies were really strong when I saw it, maybe moreso than the broadway productions I’ve seen, but that said, on Tues I did feel that there were a few sound issues that they were having. David Hunter’s microphone for instance seemed very quiet to me and so it felt like Katharine was overpowering him at times and I couldn’t hear him so well in Bad Idea, and it also made his voice sound a little nasally to me. Lol, no one was laughing in the shows I saw at the moments where the characters were being paraded about, but I guess that’s the great thing about live theatre. You never know what audience you’re gonna get and how that will affect you enjoyment and perception of a show!

It was only really the last number where everyone joins in that I thought was dodgy sounding to be far. The audience wasn't in hysterics in the lifting moments but there were definitely a lot of giggles and so it made me feel weird about it, I genuinely didn't know if it was supposed to be s bit funny or what. Yes KMP did overpower DH in last night's show too. I think I might feel a lot more positive about it on a second viewing, which is odd for me because usually it's the other way round and I don't like to revisit shows.

I saw it on Tuesday and enjoyed it, however compared to 2 other shows I saw this week (Company and Come From Away) this was was lacking quite a bit. Good things: KMP's voice, set design, David Hunters acting and adorable awkwardness. Warm and fuzzy feelings. Bad things: KMP's immovable face. Ogie - that boy can't sing, and that's a terrible thing in a musical. I didn't find him funny, but the audience was eating him up, so it's working for some people.
I must say, that I really like Laura Baldwin's voice, but she was a little bit over the top during "When he sees me". Don't get me wrong, it's my favourite song from the OBC recording, but I felt like Laura acted a bit too much and it shifted the focus from how vulnerable Dawn is, towards how "loopy" she is.
I'm glad I saw it, but don't think I will revisit until the cast change.
