Twas same when I did it. The long lists came back altered. The shortlist for the plays ( I was a plays panellist ) sections stayed the same and the winners were pretty obvious and I think we were happy with them but not so the musical list which I hadn't contributed to. But it seems from this article that the changes have become more blatant.
It wasn't a proper voting system in that the voting was secret yes, on paper, but then it was kept secret until the announcements so the panel had no idea as the vote wasn't counted before them. So anything could have happened...and probably did. There was no discussion or argument in my day. Any comments were just prodded into a couple of meetings that were dominated by the industry members. In fact I remember being delighted when AA Gill who was on my panel actually offered one or two sharp comments of criticism about some shows as no one seemed to be allowed to offer an opinion.
That said, it was great seeing all the plays in a year for nowt, two tix a show, best seats plus programmes and for that I would recommend you guys applying if you do see a number of plays or shows a year. I remember being irritated at having to wait for a show to open officially before being allocated tickets. I like to do previews when I can so I was often left waiting to see a show that others had already seen. And it took a lot of diary juggling and two sometimes three evenings a week. And, and, I'm hesitating with this one because I'm not sure how it is policed these days but I do know that at least one person on the panel did not see all the shows and yet voted with the rest of us. I doubt everyone on the panel saw all the plays or shows they were supposed to see. I'm talking the industry people. We ordinary punters saw the lot. There are a few other ex Oliviers on this board. They may have had different experiences.

I can't imagine that article is a surprise to anyone is it? When you look at the nominations year after year, it's clear that it's not about recognising the best people in their field (although I do admit that is entirely subjective and you'll never get a perfect list that everyone agrees on). It's an awards ceremony so it's about publicity and getting pictures in the papers and would we be surprised if it also included the odd backhander or two? |

Well based on these insights MHP is a banker for best new musical. It can't be BILB because that doesn't need the publicity as it's closed, it can't be Kinky Boots because it's already doing really well and anyway it's American, same for In the Heights, and MHP is British, has a stack of big names around it and definitely needs the publicity. See if I'm right :-)

See if I'm right :-) See, I see it working out that BILB is already closed, so it won't win. Mrs. Henderson Presents isn't selling that great and will no doubt close at the end of its limited run even though I loved it.
That leaves Kinky Boots and In the Heights. In the Heights has already not been selling that great but it is powering through and has a fanbase. Kinky Boots is selling well, has extended three times, is popular, will make a lot of producers a lot of money etc... I think it will be one of the two that win, I would give the edge to Kinky Boots because of the success aspect, which seems to of grown since opening and already has quite a few repeat fan visits. But don't be surprised if In the Heights doesn't take it!

This may turn into a bitter rant so I apologise in advance but I applied for the Affiliate Panel and heard absolutely nothing but looking at the nominations I am not sure the fringe is adequately represented by SOLT and eligible anyway?

Well it looks like I won't be joining any of you at Covent Garden Plaza on Sunday as no trains on my line - only replacement buses due to engineering works. Will watch the highlights on tele instead.

SOLT doesn't represent anyone. It was previously called SWET (Society of West End Theatre) and is a membership organisation of West End theatres, with some outlying affiliate members. In the past, every member of the judging panel was required to see every eligible show at every member theatre. So everyone (industry and public) knew what was eligible and nothing could be overlooked. This was a Good Thing. The problem with opening up awards to Off-West End or the fringe or the whole UK or to Stratford or Chichester or wherever is that, as the pool widens, none of the judges can possibly see everything, and every judge prejudges in their personal choice of shows which they actually attend. So, UK theatre awards tend to honour the most prominent theatres because more judges will (lazily) have gone to see their shows. This is a Bad Thing. Now the Oliviers don't even have a judging panel. Instead, all the members vote in their own business interests. It's a big joke with song and dance attached. But the members prefer this because it gives them more publicity than in the old days when the moneymaking crap used not to win Oliviers. |

I was wondering if there was someone on this board who could give me urgent advice about tomorrow. I am thinking of going to get autographs but I haven't any clue of where to go (do I just go to the theatre at a certain time to catch them as they go in?) and I have no clue what time to be there. Do they sign? Help would be very much appreciated! Thanks! |
