Not strictly a 42nd Street post, but Really Useful Theatres have announced plans to reduce the seating capacity of Drury Lane from 2,200 to 2,000, along with numerous other changes, with work commencing in 2019 at the earliest.

Yes, just reading the article on The Stage. I was slightly mislead by the title " Drury Lane to reduce capacity and add a restaurant in ‘spectacular’ £35m redevelopment". I initially assumed from that title that the addition of a restaurant would come from space taken away from the auditorium, however the restaurant will be located in the adjacent building recently acquired by the RUT co. And the main auditorium capacity will be reduced by improving legroom and seating layout. This is a great move, sacrificing 200 seats for the sake of an upgrade in comfort. Some rows in TRDL are quite squashed and I think this is a good move. Its also easier for a production to 'Sell out' at 200 less seats, so great for marketing, despite a 2000 seat auditorium still being a monster to fill. www.thestage.co.uk/news/2017/drury-lane-reduce-capacity-add-restaurant-spectacular-35m-redevelopment/?utm_source=newsletter1&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=newsletter1

I imagine Drury Lane is one of the few venues that could afford to lose capacity. I assume they think 42nd Street will have run its course by that point

Oh. The restaurant is next door? I was hoping for a refurbishment as a dinner theatre venue.

The legroom and seat comfort in the stalls is absolutely hideous. It’s a damn good job it’s a great show because sitting through a stinker would be purgatory.

I never understood the massive cross-aisle in the stalls, then all those rows crammed in behind. And if they fix the legroom in the circles as well, brilliant. I wonder if ALW will do what Cameron does in his theatres and have continental seating in the stalls? I imagine it’d be trickier to sort out the leg room in the circles but perhaps removing seats and spacing out the rest could solve it

I wonder if ALW will do what Cameron does in his theatres and have continental seating in the stalls? What is continental seating? Does it come with a croissant? If only! It's when there's no central aisle(s), seats stretch right the way across in one continuous block. Sometimes the entire stalls will be like this (ala most playhouses, or the New Wimbledon for an example of a larger house, or sometimes it'll be just the first few rows e.g. Birmingham Hippodrome, Prince Edward theatre amongst others, or sometimes the entire first block of the Stalls, such as the redesigned Victoria Palace

Thanks for the explanation daniel . Ugh. I hate that type of seating. So annoying - up down up down up down and some people leave it until the lights are dimming so you don't get time to sort out your bits *drink* after they've gone past. And, at the risk of bringing up The Topic That Shall Not Be Named......... I hope they put in more loos.😳

Personally, I'd demolish the boxes at the back of the Royal and Grand Circles, install extra rows of seats there and use that to off-set lost rows further forwards. I don't mind the boxes personally but I think if they can be sacrificed for more seats then so be it. Perhaps have stall boxes similar to what DMT have at the Prince Edward in lieu of Boxes in the Royal and Grand.

Assuming the Lord won’t be asking Dame Cameron for a recommended builder..

I've looked at the plans online. It's difficult to explain just in words, but it looks like the proposal is for five blocks in the stalls - four blocks making up the side stalls (2+2), plus one continuous block in the central stalls, made up of 22 rows, rather than the 26 at present (I think).
In the royal circle, the proposal is to retain the rear boxes.

Theres more substantial work planned than I initially realised. Plan is to rip out all but the royal box sl/sr, raise some and loose some for stage extension and rebuild with plaster casts taken from the originals.

Current Vs Proposed. Stalls definitely looks intersting... not sure if legroom is gained or lost.

Sorry to keep updating/bumping as Im reading, but I've just seen the most unspoken potentially controversial parts of the planning is to remove and relocate (at a different location offsite) the substage hydraulics which have been installed since the late 1800s. I guess to keep the theatre appropriate for newer more challenging production it makes sense, but this is some major historic change to the building, albeit not affecting patrons its some real change to the buildings heritage. Not sure how I feel about that.

Looks like some of the boxes are going and they're adding slip seats

^He did the same at the Aldwych Theatre in the 90s. Don't think ALW ever owned the Aldwych.

There are already some dodgy Upper Circle slips in Drury Lane. I remember not seeing ‘Miss Saigon’ from there many moons ago.

Other thoughts reading through: Loads more toilets being added - ace. The redesign of the foyer looks great, it can get squishy in there so opening up the left and right side for new entrances makes loads of sense. Can't see where the box office gets relocated to though. Vinegar Yard - the right stalls exit route conversion to bar and route into no6 Catherine Street restaurant looks excellent.

They can’t be used for modern shows and you can’t have a huge musical playhouse unable to take productions that want to use sub stage. They were removed for Lord of the Rings and partially removed for Charlie..

Although the application says they have not been use in over 50 years, I was under the assumption some of them were used fro Lord of the Rings, I must have my wires crossed. The documents justify their removal excellently to keep the theatre competitive and inline with other receiving house along with the removal of the stage's 1:24 rake, to allow a completely flat stage. It would be brilliant if there was a museum big enough to house the three different hydraulic lifts, or at least some of them, so the public could see them and appreciate them. Does V&A have an engineering museum?
