I did a lovely 4 mile walk this morning around Chobham Common. It was absolutely wonderful with lots of yellow gorse and it totally raised my spirits. I was completely on my own and saw no other walkers. I hope they don't ban walking altogether - there are lots of walks within a 4 mile radius of my house and most of the time, despite being in built-up Surrey, you don't see anyone else.
Aside from that I'm enjoying re-reading Jane Austen's Persuasion which I last read in 1970 for A level English! (Much more pleasurable this time.) I'm also catching up with some CDs I've never got round to listening to the first time so I'm currently working through the symphonies of Prokofiev.
And if all this sounds a bit poncey I'm also enjoying some trash TV, particularly the new series of Four in a Bed and The Repair Shop.*
*best enjoyed with a small (or large) Laphroaig.

It seems some think this is a luxury only for people outside London.
Is the idea that, when parks closed, people in London wouldn't use public transport or their own transport in order to leave London for countryside or a nice promenade at Brighton. People/families need to get out for their mental well-being.

While waiting for the shops to open this morning I wandered down to the river to watch the ducks, while trying to forget the fact that ducks are bastards. Very relaxing. It's a shame that it's in the next town over. There's a river near where I live too but during the recent floods it burst its banks and now it flows through a field of mud. There was a circle of closely spaced trees — or perhaps it was one tree that divided just underground — that I used to stand in to watch the waterfowl but it's covered in tangled weeds now.

This is why I think it isn't enough to tell people what not to do - it's sending a mixed message to close the indoor forms of entertainment while saying it's OK to be outdoors, then berating those who happen to think of the same location as others. How about suggesting alternative options which may be quieter and therefore safer? Plenty of other, lesser-known parks in London, canal towpaths, disused railway lines etc. And how about a more conciliatory approach, eg "Well done for getting out in the fresh air; we didn't realise you'd all be so keen so from now on, how about trying somewhere new where you might have a bit more space? Have you been to x/y/z etc?"

So my community help group - one ward in a borough, 90 members atm - is currently discussing whether someone in self-isolation should print flyers (being distributed throughout the ward), and if so what precautions they should take ...
This is not how I used to spend Sundays ..

I was completely on my own and saw no other walkers. I hope they don't ban walking altogether - there are lots of walks within a 4 mile radius of my house and most of the time, despite being in built-up Surrey, you don't see anyone else. You're lucky. On Wednesday, Thursday & Friday I tried walking round my village. The only day I didn't meet a dozen or more people was Thursday when it was drizzling. Yesterday we tried driving to ones of the quietest places we could think of within a few miles & again there were dozens of people there. It's imposible to social distance if no-one else around seems to be trying to. My walk on Friday was almost farcical the attempts I was making to avoid people while they strolled blithely on. So last night my mother & I decided that we're not going out anywhere beyond our garden for the forseeable future. We'll probably be crawling up the walls in a few weeks but better that than dead.
Is anyone else counting the days since they last went to places where they could have got coronavirus? For me it's 8 days since London, 6 days since work, 5 days since supermarket & 1 day since walking. Maybe if I haven't come down with it in the next fortnight I can then relax. Slightly. Except that then we will hopefully be getting a supermarket delivery. We are seriously considering wiping all the items with bleach, given coronavirus is supposed to survive 2-3 days on some surfaces.

Made a conscious effort to only watch one news bulletin today and also tried to avoid reading too much of the coronavirus crisis on social media. As Sundays are usually a sport watching day for me but thats not feasible at the moment I watched Berlioz Requiem on Sky Arts with Gustavo Dudamel conducting a huge orchestra (with 10 separate timpanists!), separate brass ensembles and a choir of what seemed about 200 voices. It was wonderful.

The day has been very uplifting so far. Went to Lidl and had a look at Morrisons across the road: Things you might not see on 'the news': Stocked shelves No queues No bulk-buying, and vigilance from everyone about that Kindness (not conditional but some people might not know that south London is, one way or another, very church orientated) So that was great

About to go out to a funeral. Not covid related but a sad story of a lady who died last December , had no family and it has taken this long for the council to organise the funeral. Used to know her from my home in Liverpool and originally there was a coach bringing people down. Not now obviously. There will be just 4 of us plus the minister taking it today so it will be very weird.Still the last thing I can do , especially as my parents won't be coming.

The sun is out, the sky is blue, and it's the time of year when I resolve that this year is going to be the year when I finally do a proper job of clearing up my garden instead of my usual half-hearted effort at weed control, and this time I really mean it, unlike last year when I really meant it and the year before when I really meant it and the year before that when I really meant it too.

I've never been much of a gardener, but when looking after an ill family member last year I began doing a bit of gardening as a respite. I am haphazard, but it's very restoring. It's a small north-facing city garden, nothing special. The bulbs I planted months ago, as an act of hope, are beginning to bloom and the oregano and mint survived the winter. I read somewhere that it's good to touch soil every day - and since we can't touch each other, maybe that's something.
My other advice - squirrel-proof bird feeders.

So I’ve been told I have to remain at home for the next 12 weeks: I offered to work from home but it sounds like they didn’t want to pay for to get me setup to do so, which really shows me just how much I am valued and appreciated by my current employer (I have been desperate to leave since Christmas, and finally got a job offer (paying more money for less time in an office) two weeks ago only for the current crisis to kick in before I could get a start date and hand my notice in, and the new employer closing down until they get the all clear to resume, which they have said is going to be early July at best) While I have a mountain of unwatched dvds and unread books, I think this is also an opportunity for me to do some midrange exercise and plenty of walking is in order(but nowhere like the places that were packed at the weekend): just some strolling about listening to music on my iPod and trying to gather my thoughts.

Well there was 9 of us in total at the funeral and it went as well as can be expected. It was weird so few of us and sitting on separate rows but at least we gave her the best send off we could in the circumstances.

I was at a funeral today too - only this was on line. In contrast to the one you attended, theatreian, this would have been a big affair, 300+. However, from what we could see, there were about a dozen there, all well separated, apart from the immediate family. He was in his late 60's, so the majority of the would be attendees would have been that sort of age group or above. It was a very moving service, but strange to be watching via a laptop, and at least we were able to be there in spirit.

Another good experience to start the day. The network of overlapping groups around here keeps growing. The over 70s had to stand down at the food banks and others have covered all those roles - referees checked, etc - within 72 hours. Demand is high but so is supply - restaurants and cafes that can't open. But this is interesting. I looked at it yesterday after it started and again just now. Amazing. Someone anonymously just chipped in £1000. It's for our local hospital - not asking people to donate as you will all have your own, just another example of the so many ways people and groups are responding to the crisis in sunny South London www.gofundme.com/f/buy-them-a-coffee-kch

I think in these difficult times we have to focus on the positive stories. Volunteer groups and those looking out for each other. Lets hope this experience changes us for the better once it's all over and we become more caring and understanding of each others needs.

Well I worked from home today. Unfortunately just a one off and will be back joining the crowds on the trains tomorrow going to work and yes they are still crowded now the service has gone from 1 every 3 minutes to 1 every 20 minutes. I started at 7am and think I actually worked harder than I do in the office. Here alone there is no one to talk to and I kept the TV off. So no distractions. I did pop out to the garden at lunchtime to put out some washing. But god does my neck ache. Got the laptop on my kitchen table and attached a keyboard and mouse as I had minutes to type and I can't be doing with those laptop keyboards. Chair is wrong height and having to lean forward as the screen is small has given me a right pain in the neck and shoulders. Such fun!

My wife’s school is doing food parcels for needy families/free school meals students...she is putting everything in bags with colleagues and leaving them at a safe pick-up station. She is constantly hand-sanitising and wearing a colourful face-mask.Also she is supervising students. I am supervising and doing e-learning updates in college. Neighbour’s children have put rainbow pictures in their front windows with a message telling everyone to stay safe, bless them.

I'm in Los Angeles and flying home tonight, bringing lots of European citizens home.
It's naturally quiet here where I am. Restaurants still running take-out options and the local pharmacies very well stocked! My sisters birthday on April 6th, I've bought her loads of her favourite american sweets to try and perk her up.

I'm in Los Angeles and flying home tonight, bringing lots of European citizens home. Have you heard if this is likely to be the last round of flights back from America? One of my mother's friends has been living in San Francisco for the last 5 years, while her husband has been working out there. She is due to come back at the end of April with her husband following in June but we can't help wondering if there will still be any flights by then.
In more mundane news, who on earth thought that growing candyfloss-flavoured grapes was a good idea? We bought some by accident last week & I only realised yesterday when I ate some, went "why on earth do these taste of candyfloss?" then looked at the packet & found they were supposed to. Usually I'd ditch them but don't feel I can now, so I'm stuck eating revolting-tasting grapes.

Weirdly quiet in our office today: never had an entire floor to myself but I'm part of a skeleton team of essential staff (with a letter from the head of our organisation to produce if challenged for being out) as I'm currently one of few unaffected by self-isolation, protecting vulnerable relatives, forced to stay home to care for children whose school has closed, etc.

As far as I'm aware, a very limited number of flights to these gateway airports will continue to run, but as its ever changing we don't know how long for.

Can you mash them with a bit of sugar and water, and make Candyfloss wine? If you don't drink it, it will do for Christmas gifts for people you don't like, I'd guess. I think I'd rather keep the sugar for more useful purposes! And goodness knows if anyone will be having a proper Christmas this year. As far as I'm aware, a very limited number of flights to these gateway airports will continue to run, but as its ever changing we don't know how long for. Oh dear. Sounds like they might be staying in the US for longer than planned.

My sister sent me a YouTube link of Italian Mayors losing their sh*t with people violating lockdowns. Can't imagine it would ever happen here.
