lynette PS Avoid the West Highlands & Florence. Worst insect bites I've had in my life were in those places. In the former I got so many bites I looked like I had chicken pox on my face & in the latter I had bites on my feet that turned into huge blisters.

I’ll never go there. Florence I found no worse than Venice when I forgot to spray myself cos I was exhausted after long journey and I fell asleep on top of the bed cover with the window open. Don’t ask.

Florence I found no worse than Venice when I forgot to spray myself cos I was exhausted after long journey and I fell asleep on top of the bed cover with the window open. Don’t ask. I didn't know of its reputation until I was already there. That was 17 years ago & I've never been back. Ended up with one of those hats with netting - looked like an idiot but it was the only thing that kept the blighters off, as 2 types of insect repellant only caused them to stick to me while biting! Venice is on my to do list. Sounds like mid-winter would be the best time to visit!

Someone at work swears by dabbing on tea tree oil onto bits, I seem to find something will work for an amount of time and then just stops but bites do seem much worse than they used to, they all go mad and big and itchy no matter whether you scratch them or not. Still don't understand how they manage to bite you under elastic waist bands either, how is that possible?!

Everyone who suffers please be careful - an insect bite last year turned into cellulitis and then formed a blood clot in my leg! If you find you have flu like symptoms following a bite please get it checked out immediately. I've suffered for years but that was the worst one ever.

Got carried away as it was sunny and went out leaving a window open, now I'm back and the insect population seems to have moved in and I'm hiding under the duvet from a daddylonglegs. Huh, daddy long legs! I’m beset by mosquito bites and I have been in the garden and to the Globe ( near the river Thames of course) These bites make my life a misery, swelling and so on. Come on, sympathy please.. I use all the usual sprays and deet stuff. I walk around in a cloud of deet when abroad but I live here! I was born in the chilliest town in the U.K., don’t argue. I can’t cope. Never mind Brexit, where can I go? Polite answers only please. Lemon Eucalyptus Essential Oil. The little buggers hate it. Or Lavender essential oil. The real thing, not something from Yardley you got for Christmas in 1976.

Dear all, don't be put off the West Highlands by the midges. They're not there the whole time. It's too beautiful to avoid permanently.
We don't seem as troubled by them over in the east.

Quite often I find supposed remedies smell so vile that they make me feel sick. I tried citronella as an insect repellant for long walks and really regretted it, as it was absolutely heave-making. Any essential oil, even a small quantity, has the same effect as it's so concentrated. I now love lavender (having previously associated it with old ladies, of whom I'm now one), but not the oil version. I've read that you are less appealing to insects if your vitamin B level is high(er); also, frustratingly, that they tend to prefer to bite women rather than men. If only I liked marmite I'd try that but I do take a multivitamin daily and haven't noticed any reduction in bites; horse flies have always been the worst imo.

On the subject of bites... I get heat rash and when I'm travelling somewhere hot enough to cause it, take a daily over-the-counter anti-histamine tablet. It fixes the heat rash but has an added benefit - if I do get bitten (despite the usual Deet etc precautions)... NO itching. Also seemed to be bitten less in the first place, but that may have been co-incidental. So not a prevention, but a way to reduce the fall out.

I read an article years ago about how they keep biting insects away, I was already on them for their supposed heart benefits but have recommended them to a few people over the years based on this. They worked a treat for my mum who used to be plagued by bites and for a couple of friends too. Just make sure to get the coated ones or the capsules otherwise it's not only the insects that stay away!

Just to cheer you all up, exactly six months until Christmas, folks. This is not a drill, I repeat, this is not a drill. Holidays are coming, holidays ARE coming. Better start clearing space ready for the compulsory tubs of sweets. I hope your sending an early warning email to John Lewis to get extra stock in this year!

Can anyone offer any advice here? Getting seriously frustrated about a ticketing issue.
Back last October I booked a ticket for Mrs Brown's Boys D'Musical at the O2 in London for the matinee performance on Saturday 6 July. Opted for Print At Home. Ticket was delivered by email last Saturday but is for the Friday evening performance. Same seat, same booking number. I have another show booked on that Friday.
I thought I'd made a mistake so checked my account which confirms the booking was definitely for the Saturday matinee. I printed the Friday ticket and the Saturday confirmation. I was at the O2 on Sunday for the Quincy Jones concert and spoke to a box office clerk and then a supervisor. They could only confirm that I had a valid ticket for Friday 5 July. They looked at my confirmation for Saturday and said it must be a glitch and I would have to phone AXS Ticketing on 0203 481 5506
So far I've spent 75 minutes waiting on the line to do this in five separate attempts. Twice yesterday I got "all operators busy, call back later" message after 4 minutes going through the menu, twice today that I was in a queue of "at least 15 minutes"(one of these was this morning two minutes after they opened!) and I held on for 20-25 minutes each time before giving up. This afternoon the queue message said it was at least 10 minutes wait so I held on for almost 35 minutes but still nothing. I've now almost run out of included minutes on my phone.
While waiting I had a look on the booking system and the seating plan and there were some front row seats for the Saturday matinee. They weren't available when I previously looked so I'm guessing they are unsold Meet and Greets. If I had got through I was going to ask for one of these. I've now booked one anyway but I still want to change the other ticket so my wife can join me !
Any suggestions what to do next most welcome. I can't just keep phoning the number as I need to keep the remaining phone minutes

For all it's faults, I love Bridlington, and it will be glorious today, but I'm sooooooo pleased I'm not going there on this train, with all these *excitable* kiddiwinks.

Back home to the north to see my brother in hospital in Mcr and the Mancs were suffering in the pavement-cracking heat.Popped into the REX on a nostalgia trip and nearly brained myself on the detritus scattered around the lobby area.Too much clutter. Then saw a fist-fight near the Oyster Bar.It was always thus lol!

Is it a good idea to allow potentially lethal 'pets' ? I hope they catch the poor thing fast, it must be hungry or tired or a bit miserable, never mind the danger to other pets and even people.

The escaped python now has a Twitter account @pythoncambridge. Even though I'm petrified of snakes, it's hilarious!

Actually, you may be surprised to know it's not the first time I've been compared to an antique...well I think what he said was Ming ing, though my hearing's not what it was of course.

On the up side, pythons are constrictors, so there's no great worry about being bitten unexpectedly. I think being squeezed would be worse than being bitten as it'll take much longer & the thought of having a snake wrapped round me makes me feel sick.
