A screw fell out of my glasses. Cue more than an hour crawling round the carpet with a torch. Found it on about the fourth pass over the same patch of carpet. I swear there's some sort of carpet elf that steals fallen things and won't put them back until you've just about given up hope.

sherriebythesea I don't know what it's like in America but far too many cyclists over here seem to believe that traffic lights don't apply to them so they don't bother to stop for red lights. We visited Ely cathedral today. We'd intended to spend a couple of hours there then visit Cromwell's house & have a walk round Ely. Four and a half hours later we left the cathedral & decided we didn't have time for anything else!

Oh no sherriebythesea, I hope you feel better. I can highly recommend codeine. It's one of my favourite over the counter drugs. You might not be able to poo for several days but it's worth it. I sailed through a cracked rib on codeine. It's especially nice with a pink gin.

Today, with voice nearly back, I went back to work. We were super busy as one of the other call centres was closed so By lunchtime it was nearly gone again, and I’ve developed a nasty cough so I made a doctors appointment and left work early with 20 mins to spare to the appointment.
Got to my car and IT HAD A FLAT TYRE!! Not a bit flat, like pancake flat, not driveable. So I had to summon an Uber to take me to the doctors, where they scolded me for being late and made me wait 40 mins till they could fit me in (I was 7 mins late!)
Docs then told me, NOTHING they can do about my voice, and it may take 2 or 3 WEEKS to run it’s course!!!
Had to walk home, then call the breakdown and get my dad to take me back to work and my car. Breakdown man then couldn’t get in the car park and had to walk down to me with a compressor and it was such a massive faff and I was FREEZING!!
Got home and had dinner now I can only rasp. Just 4 more days at work to go like this!!
I hate my life today. *massive dramatic sigh*
EDIT: just watching the news about the fires and thinking how much worse things could be. I don’t have anything to moan about really, just had a frustrating day and wanted to get if off my chest! I’m going for a little cry and a piece of cake and then I’ll be a ok!

AND NO ONE TOLD ME THIS BEFORE? sherriebythesea, I'm really sorry about the accident and being so late to say this. Also, though, I didn't think you could still get codeine OTC in the UK. Even if you can, I'd steer clear of it for the side effect Ryan mentions. I've been told the hospital pharmacist may prescribe this for me post-op, but I'm hoping to discuss alternatives or something which contains another painkiller to reduce the codeine content.

I've been importing Nurofen Plus or more recently the cheaper Boots version of Codeine + Ibuprofen from the UK for years as codeine is only available on prescription over here in the nanny state of Germany. Never had any side effects and it's brilliant for all sorts of aches. Everytime I'm in London I buy at least one package to take home with me.

You can get co-codamol over the counter. Mixture of codeine and paracetamol. The pharmacist will ask difficult questions but just look them in the eye and tell them your GP suggested it for a (insert your choice of short term painful condition). Their eyebrows will raise if you ask for more than one packet so don’t. You can get soluble ones, which is handy for dropping in a glass of..... water.

The only question they've ever asked me about paracetamol/codeine is "Have you used these before?" ("Hell yeah! They're like, awesome, dude!" is probably not the best response.)
I'm disappointed that nobody has done the "Why are there no aspirins in the jungle?" joke yet. (Answer: because the shipping costs are prohibitive and the sales potential is essentially zero.)

My doctor told me to take codeine for non-specific back pain once. It gave me terrible nausea to the point that I decided I'd rather just be in pain every time I made any sort of below-the-neck movement including breathing, and I haven't taken codeine since. (I could probably pinpoint the exact date this happened, the doctor also said I should carry on my life as usual so I didn't bother cancelling my theatre trips, and luckily London Road surprisingly turned out to be brilliant enough to distract me from the pain for a while.) Hope you're beginning to feel better, sherriebythesea, your schedule is too exciting and full to be disrupted by one inconsiderate idiot.

I'm not above booking tickets for a football game based on the fact that the away team is bringing the hottest player in the league along. Second row, too. The mother's reaction to my choice of seats: "Oh great, that's the area where they sell chips".
Women shouldn't be let loose on football, I suppose.

She had a slipped disc earlier on in the year and had to struggle through pre- and post-surgery on paracetemol alone.

I remember running super late for this and running full pelt along the south bank in the pouring rain not to miss the start. Totally worth it! And I’d dried off by the interval. Beautiful ending when all the hanging baskets came down from the ceiling.

Normally, I’d get annoyed at this comment and my feminist hackles would be raised, but I was once at the football walking along the side of the pitch and the ball got kicked out and flew at me so I screamed and ran off, to the amusement of the crowd! So maybe you have a point, at least when it comes to this woman! 😂

I’m fine with codeine most of the time, but occasionally it knocks me sick and there’s no real pattern, so it’s a gamble when I take it, whether it’s going to ease my pain, or have me reaching for a bowl. I tend to reserve it now for when my pain is so bad, being sick would be an acceptable pay off

So maybe you have a point, at least when it comes to this woman! 😂 Oh, don't shoot me, most people here know I'm quite a feminist myself - and have been a football fan for many years, who's sat through many a dire game in a cold stadium and followed her team both to the depths of second league and to the heady heights of European football, where I've had the pleasure to meet another forum member even! We see one or two games each season at home (mother's a member even to allow earlier bookings), so it was firmly tongue-in-cheek. She "So what game should we go and see this year?" Me: "Hmm, we can go when Sandhausen comes, they got that Icelandic hottie every lady went gaga for during the world cup in summer" She: "Okay, will you book the tickets?" Me: "Yea sure, let's see... hmm, either second row or far away and high up? Well, second row then, be close to the pitch, see something of the fabled bloke". As for chips, this being Germany and true to cliche, you can get sausages everywhere in the stadium, but only one area has a place that sells chips , I'm amused she remembered. So it's all good, I'll also watch games without Icelandic eye candy, but I don't MIND it

Throat is killing me and I don’t know what pills to buy over here haha (other than paracetamol or ibuprofen). Go to the back of Boots or Superdrug where the pharmacy counter is and ask for advice. (Then, whatever they suggest, ask for the cheaper non-branded version. Exactly the same product, significantly cheaper.)

We have a temp in who talks incessantly. There's no harm in her, but if she goes on about her ancient cat any more... Thank God she finishes on Friday. Also sulking because hannechalk isn't in work to bear the pain with me.

I find Ultra Chloraseptic throat spray the best by miles. Combine it with Tyrozets tablets and it seems to work for me. I have the former sat on my desk right now. Haven't heard off tyrozets, are they over counter or just in shops please? Am onto day 7 of sore throat and I'm very bored of it.

Made my day I feel for you, I get that though swap hearing loss for nausea and it's distinctly alarming, glad delfont Macintosh came through for you, I missed a load of theatre this year due to that.
