There was a massive full-sized poster for this in the foyer when I turned up at the box office to purchase tickets to see Groundhog Day.

How exciting! There was a massive- about the size of a wall- image for the show in The Princess Theatre when I turned up to purchase my tickets for Groundhog Day at the Box Office.
Listen to the accent! I sound nothing like that.

I have to admit, I'm really not a fan of Sarah Brightman. Just never enjoyed her voice or performances. I recognize that puts me in the minority in terms of the vast public, but, can't help it - and I had purchased a number of her CD's (when that was still a thing) thinking maybe I needed to warm up to her or something. But all these years later - Ann Crumb > Sarah Brightman in any Aspects of Love songs; Sierra Boggess > Sarah Brightmas in any POTO songs... etc. Which saddens me because the amount of energy and marketing and social media this production is doing would in most cases genuinely have me excited and contemplating planning a trip to Australia. But I don't have the slightest interest. I sincerely hope I'm in the minority and that this will be a grand success, just because I love the score so much and happy to see it having a renewal of interest and success that seemed to have eluded it the original productions and revivals to this point. On a completely other note, kind of funny that they used "The Lady's Paying" instrumental to open the video for the first day of rehearsal. Almost to say to the fans of that song who were angered by it being cut in the London/forthcoming Bway production "we've got it"

The fact that Joe has been ALLOWED into the house is a massive deal, so it wouldn’t scan to have a gaggle of beauticians allowed in, nor a load of Tailors just for a pair of mood lighteners.

Odd that Miss Brightman is completely missing from any publicity and rehearsal footage so far. Is she there and her Norma is elusive and camera shy, or are we back in the days when opera divas would park and bark their "Norma" in different productions without much rehearsal?

She's pictured in the video they put out of the cast meeting on the first day, having the set presented to them etc. The cast are all standing in a circle (presumably introducing themselves). She's very dressed down, wearing black rimmed glasses, laughing with the people either side of her.

She's way too busy serving #icon to be in all the publicity. Our illusive Queen.
(It's funny actually, I read in one of the many ALW unofficial biographies in the 90's that when she was in Cats in 1981 she stood apart from all the other struggling artistes and was always swanning in and out of stage door in expensive/luxurious outfits and didn't mix much with the rest of the cast - could well be (probably is) total b*llox; but the image made me laugh. Was allegedly one of the reasons ALW noticed her)

I put 'unflattering' in inverted commas because....she's gone to work. I like that, it's work gear to roll your sleeves up in. Perhaps it's performative camaraderie, and when she left the rehearsal room she slipped into a D&G number.

I got the feeling she’s not really been mixing with the others as she was hanging by the door in that first video and wasn’t sat down looking at the set with the others. And there are no photos of her from the other cast.

And there are no photos of her from the other cast. In the main she only has two people and a fake chimp to act with, so I guess it's not too strange. I also didn't see her sitting watching the set presentation. I did notice the front row seats were a bit padded and the ones behind were like school chairs, lol. Perhaps Sarah was to the side reclining on a chaise longue!

According to Tim Draxl on Instagram, the cast start rehearsing in the theatre next week. So that’s a whole month of rehearsing at the actual venue.

Billy Bouchier (in the ensemble, and I'm guessing he'll cover one or two lead roles too) is currently starring as Tony in West Side Story on the Sydney harbour and posted earlier this week that he had only just joined rehersals. Seems like most of that time in the theatre will be his only rehersal time. Not sure how much of a factor that is, but it may account for something.

Going to see this in Sydney. Can't imagine what it will be like having seen the most recent London production.

Sarah looks great. Hold on folks, for another twist in the ALW Sunset Saga, if he decides Sarah is the ultimate Norma, and wants the film to be made - with her....! Lol

For me, a large part of Sunsets magic is it's setting and style which adds so much to the piece and the atmosphere and this so far looks so spot on. Especially after the disappointing UK tour and the Savoy production

Especially after the disappointing UK tour and the Savoy production Agree with this, though I'd talked myself around to liking the sound of a radical version. My problem with Lloyd's vision is that it felt so badly worked out. I know I'm massively in the minority here, but the text simply didn't work - despite the cuts made. On another thread nobody has yet helped me out with my question about one line of dialogue: Do we ever hear the organ sound at the mansion, or was that cut? As there are almost no props, does the actor playing Max mime the organ, or is it cut entirely. I just can't remember. But I wonder about this line, and the meaning it's left with if we don't see or hear it: "The house was always so quiet, just me and Max and that organ". I mean....

As I recall you were given several variations of ‘it’s his interpretation, just go with it’ at the time. Unless every piece of theatre you have watched has been a documentary I fail to see how you haven’t experienced this concept before. Regardless, it has proven itself enough so I doubt Lloyd will be losing much sleep.

Of course many people said 'it's an interpretation, be open to it, go with it' and I went along with that spirit keen to have my usual interpretation challenged. In my post I'm just ASKING (because some people are prepared to discuss rather than chastise and sneer) whether that particular piece of business (re. the organ) was left as a non sequitur, or was represented in some other way that absorbed it into Lloyd's scheme. This was in the context of comments about the Australian production having a styling that's a more conventional interpretation, matching a more photographic 'reality' of Hollywood back then.
Where meaning is generated by new more radical interpretions I'm really interested. Making new sense of things is exciting. I was just wondering if in this case - if cut adrift from a more naturalistic staging - the line "just me and Max and that organ" ended up sounding like the 'organ' being played with was not a musical one! I doubt that was the intention - and made me question how interested Lloyd was in people who don't know the material already. He's not obliged to care about that; but it makes me less interested in a piece - even if I know the material inside out.

Anyway, theatrefan62 , it will be interesting to see whether after a radical version this Australian one only basks in the conventional and looks a bit stolid/stale, or if it centres in the expected but with innovations that radiate from that. In the rehearsal clip there's a moment from 'The Lady's Paying' where Joe is tipped/leaning onto one of the dresser/outfitters, somewhat puppeteered by them. It's more extreme than the choreographed manipuation in the other 3 productions I've seen that included the song.
