Got a free upgrade from the Grand circle to the stalls for this.
Enjoyed it a lot. Well worth watching, esp if you're a wolf Hall fan

Ralph Fiennes will lead a new play by David Hare at the Bridge Theatre, titled Straight Line Crazy.
With designs by Bob Crawley and casting by Robert Sterne, the show will see Fiennes play influential New York Official Robert Moses, who cast a long shadow over the city's politics.
Nicholas Hytner will direct the piece, which runs from 16 March to 18 June 2022. Further cast and creatives are to be revealed.

Maybe less is more? I enjoyed it a lot at the new diorama at 75 minutes. The extra hour seems to have made it worse.

Looking forward to this, have my ticket for last night in Soho which I cannot wait for. Anyone else going to see anything at LFF ? I was tempted by the French Dispatch Phantom of the open, Riz Ahmed in Encounter, 'all my friends hate me' and king Richard for me.

That will come as a surprise to the Young Vic. I was sitting next to a 13-year old at the weekend and there were no warnings about depictions of extreme knife violence, or any warnings at all. And we were sitting almost within lunging distance, in the second row. The Young Vic is about as en pointe on current trends as anywhere.
Has a show warning on the website www.youngvic.org/whats-on/hamlet-cush-jumboAlso, id say thats different to themes of R and J, which features suicide fairly heavily.

The kerfuffle over the recent R&J was not thr focus on youth violence or anything else in the play. It was the warnings about the play featuring suicide and the provision of support line numbers to audience members Providing content warnings on a piece that old and well known does seem unnecessary to me. It is actions like that which feel very well-meaning on the part of the theatre that will provoke remarks from certain media outlets. Perhaps that is what the Globe wanted. It is certainly what the Globe should have expected. I genuinely do not believe that warnings are necessary on a piece like R&J. New writing is different. But a 400+ year old play that has been performed in every part of the world and adapted into every conceivable art form cannot come as a surprise to audience members at the Globe. 30 seconds on Google tells you whether or not you would find the content genuinely triggering. But... even that doesn't sound like a reason why they should be lambasted tbh. It may help people in the audience who connect with the show and who have those feelings, and need support in some way. A lot of people will have their first R and J experience at the globe, and not everyone will read up about plays beforehand A well meaning resource being offered to their audience members doesn't make them 'woke central and captured by the radical left' ( not that you're saying that i appreciate!). Most theatres nowadays offer content warnings and trigger warnings. I think thats positive overall.

This is now 20 minutes! I thought it was great overall. Won't say too much about it but packed a lot into the short running time and was surprisingly funny. Worth a watch though I wouldn't go out of you're way given the length..

Mirror and the light in London seems to be a hit. And comedy of errors has had some great reviews.
Hopefully they can back on track for next year. A strong RSC is good for the theatre infrastructure in this country and I find it sad they've done so little in the last year.

Cases down on a 7 day basis today. Back in decline. Considering we don't have any mitigations at present, that's good news...

I think if someone complains about a theatre being 'Woke' without qualifying why they feel that or giving examples, then it's fair for other posters to question that.
'Woke' seems to have been appropriated from being a positive phase by black activists, to being used by bores like Piers Moron being contrarian. It's fine to criticise aspects of the globes programme of course but using the term 'woke' isnt particularly illuminating

Its a one woman play, so a big ask for her, but it looks very interesting and they are promising affordable tickets during the run according to the article.

Tom Fletcher and Amy Dowden have both tested positive for COVID and won’t be performing this Saturday. But sounds like they will be back the week after. Probably due to those 2 anti vax dancers risking the show.

Is there a theatre in central London that hasn't lost its spark during this pandemic? The Almeida? ( Maybe Macbeth will be good) The Royal Court? ( God knows they're trying) The Donmar ( the four cast Constellations was a masterstroke but what's happening in the main house?) Hampstead (at least they had the Tom Wells play) - my point is that they're all struggling with what to program, (don't get me started on The National - Paradise? ) who is their audience? Do they program to challenge their audience, to cater to them? Is the audience even going to be there? All of these theatres are now in the process of trying to find a way to balance staying in business and evolving their repertoire and staffing - the Globe is just part of an overall syndrome that is affecting everyone who not only loves theatre but who works in it. So, yes, the Globe has lost its spark, but they're not alone. The next few years are going to be rough going for us all. Donmar is just opening up now! I think almeida will be boosted by the Macbeth, and Young Vic seems good with the hamlet. I'm hoping normal heart will do well for tbe national and old Vic gets back on track with the Christmas Carol onwards. I agree it all feels a bit weird at the moment, but once people get more used to going out, the audiences will start to come back. I think maybe they need to cast bigger names though in some instances.

I thought it was great, and the cast wonderful
I had a pillar seat which was upgraded to nearer the front of stalls. Looks like its selling very poorly, which is a shame, as i enjoyed it a lot

I didn't see this summer's Romeo and Juliet, but I think it focused on teenage mental health and had trigger warning and helpline numbers. Is that the kind of thing that's meant by woke? I would have loved to see it, and I'm always interested in productions that make modern parallels. But I accept it's not everyone's preference. I don't go to the Globe often, mainly because the ticket prices are too high for me. I might be wrong, but I get the impression that their bread and butter is school parties and tourists, which is fine if that means they can break even. My children and friends' children have all been on trips there to see a play and often there's a tour and workshop as well. They seem to be really popular with students and teachers from what I hear. So perhaps their productions are aimed at maximising accessibility to GCSE/A Level students? I'm not saying Shakespeare has to have modern parallels spelled out in order to engage teenagers, but I have seen this approach work with my own children. I appreciate as you say its not for everyone, but doing that for Romeo and Juliet is perfectly fine nowadays. If it helps people, then i don't understand the criticism of it being overly woke I normally just get the standing tickets myself. I went to midsummers and will be going to the comedy store players in October and maybe 12th night. Ive just seen most Shakespeares a million times by now, so it needs an interesting cast or concept to pull me in now

it has been taken over by Woke HQ and the radical left. Can I ask what that means in terms of the plays at the globe? I've not been there in a few years. Yeah i get a bit confused when plays are criticised as woke or as that being a reason why they aren't selling well.... Maybe stuff like Shrew and Merchant of Venice having their misogyny/anti Semitism put into a more modern context?

I think its good its opening it up to more comedy and music shows. I think the problem is just that its very well done Shakespeare shows without any big names. But then, its always been a bit like that i think
