This show, based on the story and film, will premiere in Tokyo in 2020-2021. Music and lyrics by Michael Bruce, book by Peter Duchan, directed by Thom Sutherland, produced by Michael Harrison and Umeda Arts Theater. This sounds as though could be interesting, although I've never read or seen the source material.
I do wonder if premiering in Japan was always the plan, or if the Japan deal was struck recently due to its theatre scene being relatively (although not entirely) unscathed by the COVID-19 crisis to my knowledge. Who knows, maybe developing a show in Japan or South Korea will become more common in the near future, for those with the means to do so.
