This show, based on the story and film, will premiere in Tokyo in 2020-2021. Music and lyrics by Michael Bruce, book by Peter Duchan, directed by Thom Sutherland, produced by Michael Harrison and Umeda Arts Theater. This sounds as though could be interesting, although I've never read or seen the source material. I do wonder if premiering in Japan was always the plan, or if the Japan deal was struck recently due to its theatre scene being relatively (although not entirely) unscathed by the COVID-19 crisis to my knowledge. Who knows, maybe developing a show in Japan or South Korea will become more common in the near future, for those with the means to do so. enterstage.jp/news/2020/06/014775.htmlillusionist-musical.jp/

I used to own Michael Bruce's Unwritten Songs album. He can write a fun tuner.

Haruma Miura - who'll be playing Eisenheim - has a terrific voice. He was one of the guest stars in Cynthia Erivo's (bizarre) concert at the Tokyo International Forum in January.

I checked in on the website for this musical and came across some horribly sad news: Mr Miura passed away last month. While not seeking to get into a detailed discussion of the circumstances of his death, I'll just say that I wish he had felt able to seek help from loved ones or professionals. What a tragedy. (The future of the production is uncertain.)

This show is now slated to get its first full production in Japan in 2025. If I understand correctly, Naoto Kaiho will be playing the lead character, Eisenheim. illusionist-musical.jp/
