The person who whiffs might be sat next to the person eating crisps. The person eating crisps might be next to the pissed up lager drinker. The lager drinker might be next to the large person. The large person might be next to the inappropriate giggler. The inappropriate giggler might be next to the tall leg-spreader. The leg spreader might be next to the programmer fanner. The programme fanner might be next to the texter.... Altogether now: Dem bones dem bones...dem dry bones Dem bones dem bones...dem dry bones Dem bones dem bones...dem dry bones Now shake those smelly old bones.....

And there was @thematthew, on the How Was Your Day? thread, bemoaning only moments ago the lack of pointless outrage...

It think it should be a play. "Stink!". About bad smelling audience members. Of course the end of the story will be that (almost) everbody is annoying to others because of something.

It’s a kind of very strong/hot vaseline-type gunk that you are meant to apply to your temples when you have a headache. (I have no idea how it combats smells...) Sorry for making the assumption everyone would know what tiger balm is. I don't believe it has any effect as a cure for headaches, but I find its aroma handy for blocking out other aromas. I just take the lid off and hold the jar under my nose. It might bother people around me, but I take the chance that hopefully it won't, in the same way that the people who have BO - whether due to a condition or simply not washing - take the chance that the people near them will hopefully not be too bothered. Ditto, whatever soap I've used that day, etc. Whatever situation we are in when surrounded by other people, there's the chance something about them might annoy us. In a theatre, I'll politely ask someone to stop talking, programme-fanning, coat/bag-rustling etc but don't feel I can ask them to stop breathing or having BO for the time being.

I'm a big fan of Tiger Balm and it does help with headaches. When applied to the temples/forehead it has a very strong cooling effect much like those special cooling pads you can buy (or the good old frozen peas). It is particularly helpful for mild headaches when you don't immediately want to take painkillers or during a migraine attack when you wait for the pill to kick in.
The cooling effect of its ingredients are also useful after a day on your legs, i.e. after long sightseeing or shopping walks or after physical exertions. When on a horseriding tour in Costa Rica this spring I covered myself head to toe in Tiger Balm afterwards both to help my muscles relax after hours in the saddle and to deal with the stuffy heat in our non-air-conditioned hacienda.
So if you sit next to someone faintly smelling of Tiger Balm in a London theatre, it might well be me.

Is it one of those potions where contact with the mucus membranes (and other generally sensitive areas) is to be avoided?

Is it one of those potions where contact with the mucus membranes (and other generally sensitive areas) is to be avoided? Yes. See Caiaphas' story on the second page. I've had similar experiences. Wash hands thoroughly between applying Tiger Balm and touching sensitive areas. Same goes for Japanese mint oil which works along the same lines as Tiger Balm.

I'm guessing if it's another occasion you've covered yourself from head to toe in it you might be smelling of it more than faintly!

Haha, nope, I usually stick to tiny dabs on the temples. Even I know a mix of horse smell and Tiger Balm wouldn't go down well in a West End theatre...

Having no sense of smell isn't usually a good thing but there are times when it can be quite useful. You can pretty much smother yourself in anything and sit next to me...

I just discovered that my sweaty t-shirt that I changed out of after an exercise on Mon evening is still in my bag. Fortunately I'm seeing Saint George and the Dragon tonight and, having checked the ticket situation, it seems unlikely that anyone will be sitting anywhere near me to be distressed by the smell.

What does it smell like? Mint , citrus, chemical ? Tiger Balm or abby's t-shirt? I always think it smells like Vicks Vapour Rub. Tiger Balm that is.

It is similar, ditto those Vicks stick-up-the-nose things that look like tampon applicators. I used to be addicted to those nasal intruders. I still bear the scars.

The stalls at Drury Lane definitely had more than a whiff of Voltarol on Wednesday afternoon. Perhaps that's why the standing ovation took a while to get going!
