When Baz's column in the Mail was at its height, I used to love his Thursday night Twitter announcements. And theatre gossip is one of the main reasons I read forums such as this one or Broadway World.
But over the years there are lots of theatre rumours that never come to be. Plans change, talks breakdown, there are lots of reasons why a rumoured show or piece of casting might not transpire however strong the original intentions were. It's easy to forget these so I thought I'd ask what your favourite ones you've heard are? Sometimes they pop up as juicy curios in biographies. Here are some I can remember which never came to be (yet):
Robert Lindsay making his NT debut in a double bill in Othello (as Iago)/ Habeus Corpus. Emma Thompson doing All's Well That Ends Well (or As You Like It?) At the NT in the 90s Renee Zelwegger making her West End Debut in the Hustler Lenny Henry in the Richard Pryor biopic at the NT Betty Buckley taking over as Mrs J in Blood Brothers in N.Y.

Martin Clunes in Harvey was one rumour which never came to pass.

Didn't we have several months of Bette Midler coming over as Dolly?

About 20 years a production of Sondheim's The Frogs got as far as being in the NT programme but was cancelled because of a clash with a Broadway production. Which seemed bizarre as the overlap audience must have been about 4 people.
And whatever happened to Richard Bean's Count of Monte Cristo?
