I've done a good job of staying away from all of these clips so far. I want my experience next Friday to be as unsullied as possible! Me too! It's getting so difficult to avoid clips - I think I'm going to need a social media hiatus until next Friday!

I know what a brilliant voice Ariana has, but none of the trailers have really put her centre stage. Watching that video of Popular, it's clear that this film, or at the very least the music, is in very safe hands. Knowing what a huge fan she is of Kristen Chenoweth in the original, that is just about the best possible tribute to her.

Have to say, as pleasing to look at as he may be Jonathan Bailey looks way too old to be playing a university student.

I could deal with the FILM popping up so much on social media since my algorithms are very much skewed towards musical theatre and movies, so it makes sense in itself. But has this been the most relentlessly marketed musical movie since Frozen in terms of merchandising tat? I'm sick to the backteeth of the endless flood of Wicked-related stuff that has popped up as well. Watch it all being flogged at huge discounts when the movie isn't the Be it and End it of this season's offerings. It's actively turning me against it. Sorry, just came to this thread to rant after yet more pink/green tat cluttered my SM timeline this morning. Months ago the window of Swarovski near me changed to a pink window and a green window, and I thought how ugly it looked! It's only in the last week I've seen a Swarovski advert with Ariana Grande and realised it's linked to Wicked.

This thread has been in existence since May 2016 😯.
Fun poll added, what is your expectation of the film?
We’ll do the reality after the release.

This thread has been in existence since May 2016 😯. Fun poll added, what is your expectation of the film? We’ll do the reality after the release. Expectations are high. Full reviews aren’t out yet but the early reactions have been so strong with Wicked now being talked about as a strong contender for Oscar nominations and wins. In this weeks predictions Variety has forecast Wicked to receive 9 nominations including Best Picture, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress. They also recently held a For Your Consideration screening for Academy members which had the highest turnout since Oppenheimer and received a rare standing ovation. Let’s see how things pan out next week but it’s hard not to get excited when you hear things like this. I’m sure some critics won’t be as hot on it but there’s definitely a lot of love at the moment from those that have seen the film.

It's interesting that Wicked is possibly getting awards buzz and acclaim the review when it opened on Broadway were mixed to negative but yet it's the third highest grossing stage musical of all time.

Agree, I'm also surprised how his singing doesn't sound all that pleasant either. I see Greenwich has now been renamed Greenwitch. To be honest I'm kind of sick of Wicked already and its not even opened.

I wonder what they'll do about submissions for awards? Assuming her performance deserves it, submitting Cynthia for Best Actress seems a no-brainer with a role like this. However 'Supporting Actress' seems to rather minimise Ariana's role, especially with new music added for her, and those who have seen the film are already raving about her. Would they put the two head-to-head as a publicity thing? Which also makes me wonder if this kind of thing is negotiated ahead of time.

Yeah it was announced that Cynthia would be submitted for Best Actress and Ariana for Supporting. I see what you mean about it maybe minimising Ariana’s role a bit but it’s also probably the best choice tactically. A role like Glinda especially for Part 1 wouldn’t stand much chance in Best Actress but will fare much better in Supporting. Not to forget that there have been some big wins in Supporting categories for musicals such as Ariana Debose and Catherine Zeta Jones. By the sound of things Ariana Grande is giving the stand out performance of the movie so putting her in Supporting is the best move for a potential nomination and even win.

I'm so happy this is a musical movie being unashamedly promoted as such, as opposed to the recent trend of hiding the musical bits!

I'm not sure what annoys me more, the constant tie-ins, or it being 'amazafying' when it should obviously have been 'amazifying'.

You can't blame Universal for going all in on Wicked tie ins. They saw how well Barbie did for Mattel and Warner Bros last year so to do it on a film they own is a no brainer.

I've been paying some attention to a few threads on X (despite trying to break my addiction and move to Bluesky!) that are talking about the seemingly dull color grading on some of the clips that have been released so far. Having just had the same criticism of Paddington In Peru, I really don't like this flat feeling color grading and cinematography that seems to be the trend of late, especially for something set in OZ?? Supposedly CGI doesn't look so fake under such conditions, but I'd prefer more vibrancy if this turns out to be the case.
They keep going on about how this is not only a love letter to Wicked on stage, but also a love letter to the Wizard of Oz, and the technicolor of the 1939 movie is one of the most glorious things in cinema in my opinion.
Sam Raimi's Oz the Great and Powerful was a pretty middling film, but something it did have going for it was its beatiful colour saturation.

It could possibly be the HDR on YouTube clips, that tends to suck the colour out of images.

Maybe it’s deliberate so that we’re “amazified” when we see it for real.

I have noticed that everything that Cynthia appears to be getting lambasted for by certain corners of the internet these days are also this same corners where Patti Lupone gets celebrated for speaking her mind and giving no f***s.

Nope, Patti is just as rude too. At least Cynthia can sing I guess. I'm sure the press are hyping stuff up, but at the end of the day Cynthia is saying these things. There was no need to mention previous actresses who auditioned for the role, and especially not in a derogatory way. Cynthia would freak out if someone said that about her. And in that red carpet interview its more her tone than anything. If she had made it more a light hearted tone it wouldn't be so bad.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not naive enough to not understand that a lot of A/B list fame is a popularity contest outside of the quality of the work, I just personally don't get it. I don't need my favourite singers, actors etc. to be 'nice', especially not when their talent speaks for itself. Chappel Roan is getting a lot of this lately too, calling out photographers on red carpets and then getting branded rude and problematic. What happened to the days of Faye Dunaway and Joan Crawford when being a bitch was just an acceptable persona? 😅
