Do we know whether this will be a "live" recording such as the Les Mis film or dubbed in production like say Chicago was? It absolutely shouldn't make a difference to casting, but if it's the latter you could see them going for a named/star actress who could be helped in post-production rather than needing a belter who could do it live?! I hope they do a dubbed version. Live singing sounds amazing in the theatre, but it didn't sound as great in the Les Mis movie. Even with the few people that did sing well, the sound itself just wasn't rich enough. Movies just aren't the right medium for live singing.

The movie isn't even a tangible thing- it's a thought at this point. I think the only progress made is maybe the producers have started testing different writers for the script, and maybe talk of a director- I think it was mentioned at some interview, but I could be wrong.
Edit: but than again Hollywood is so secretive for all I know they've already cast it!

Edit: but than again Hollywood is so secretive for all I know they've already cast it! There's an article that says Stephen Daldry will direct and Winnie Holzman is in the process of writing the screenplay. And that thing you said about for all you know they've already cast it, I've literally been hoping that for months. I hope they just suddenly announce a cast and say we start filming next month. It probably won't turn out that way, but I guy can hope

Stephen Schwartz is writing 4 new songs for the Wicked movie! Wow, alot more than I expected! I just thought maybe one, two a push. True. I thought 1 too. Just for the oscars. Now this means they'll have to get rid o more songs too...

Hmm, not necessarily. Through the new songs the could (possibly) tell the back story of such characters as Nessarose, Dr. Dillamond, Boq or Mdme. Morinle

I've always thought Nessa, Boq and Fiyero could use a good song. And actually, Glinda should have a big song of her own as well. I know she has Thank Goodness, but she doesn't have a real solo like Elphaba does. But of course that would make the movie a lot longer, so I can't see how can add songs without cutting others. That is considering the fact that hollywood almost always cuts songs, or shortens songs. They ruined a lot of Les Mis songs by shortening them for the movie

2019!?!!!!!!!!! Wouldn't put all your eggs into one basket that this will get made.... *Facepalm* Of course it will get made. The date of release doesn't mean that it won't get made at all. It will definitely get made considering the success of other musical movies, and also the fact that they've wanted to make it for years. They're already 4 days into development, so they've definitely started. Writing for new songs + script + an entire movie score + build all the sets and costumes and make them seem life like + find a suitable cast (which is very difficult in this case) + record it (probably record the singing first and the acting second) + edit it and add special effect.... It takes a while.

Apparently the song titles were leaked. I'm not sure if it's real or just someone making stuff up.
1) All Good 2) A little Wicked 3) Bad Times 4) The Good, Bad, Wicked Witch

Sounds like it might be fake to be honest. Seems too early for this sort of information to be knocking around. I could be wrong though.
And if they're real they're not that inventive. The big keywords in the first three are just threaded together for the 4th song's title.

Look at the Les Mis Wikipedia page, didn't take them 3 years! True. And the Les Mis movie was a piece of garbage. And I hate the fact that it will take them so long. But I'm just reporting what has been officially announced. The fact that it has a 2019 release date doesn't mean they won't make the movie

Universal, and other studios, do have a tendency to announce WAYYY in advance for big titles- look at the Marvel films, the Disney live action films, most films based on comics that have big names.
I still don't think this is a sure thing. Stuff gets announced and cancelled all the time, and while Wicked is a big seller as a stage poduction, musicals don't really do all that well on screen, critically or financialy (there are exceptions of course, but generally speaking here) EDIT I wouldn't say Les Mis was a "piece of garbage" - as it was pne of the more succesful musical films. I don't agree with alot if the direction choices, but it wasnt a bad film (maybe a poor adaptation but not a bad film in itself, in my opinion)
I'd love to see it happening though- but I'm not giving it too much thought right now. I bet when they start casting (well into next year probably) I'll be a little more invested in it.

Les Mis was a financial success and won several awards. And I think there's no way that a Wicked movie is not happening. Now that they've officially announced that they're doing it and are actually in development, I can't see any reason for them not to go through with it now. It has a huge following in the theatre world and it's a story that could draw big mainstream crowds as well. With the right casting (Talent over fame for the 2 leads and star names in the supporting roles, such as Kevin Spacey as The Wizard for example) and the right advertising, it should be a successful movie if done right.

Okay but before Les Mis(which you called upthread a piece of garbage so Im not sure I understand your stance) the last succesful ones were Chicago and Dreamgirls.. And I can't think of any others in recent times but perhaps Im mistaken)- those arent good odds. Phantom had a massive following, Andrew was spilling the money into that film- and THAT was a sh*t film in every way (execpt maybe some costumes, which didnt hold a candle to the original, and that 100 piece orchestra) These type of projects require smart, passionate producing. And sometimes they just fall through

Remember just because someone says they are going to do something doesn't always mean they will.
I think the general populous are less aware of Wicked than they where of Les Mis. And Les Mis didn't make THAT much money. I'd imagine they will see what kind of budget it will need to do it successfully and then realise that it's too expensive for what universal will get back
