For anyone interested I can across this article from the L.A. Times on Twitter.
With the recent passing of Pat Carroll (who voiced Ursula) it's quite an interesting article, going on to state how The Little Mermaid was the start of the golden age of animated features (which it was).
The article also goes on about the how Pat Carroll acted out what Howard Ashman presented her characterwise and how Ursula was based upon the drag artist Divine (I knew that).
It also makes reference to a queer subtext and the lack of representation in Disney films.
It quite a good read.

The Little Mermaid is one of my favourite Disney films and I remember (can it be 30 years ago?) by my best friend and I saw it at the cinema's in Sydney 5 times!
One time we even used his nephews and niece as an excuse to go and see it.
Another friend- a corporate lawyer, straight and an arrow and very serious- absolutely loves it.
He is the oldest of seven children and we bought it for him as a joke when it was released (at the time) on VHS. Now, I swear, it has been watched so many times that each sibling can quite lines.
In fact, when he turned 50 I actually bought hime a copy of DVD!
To quote Sebastian "Ah, what a soft shell I'm becoming".
