Starring Emma Thompson and Daryl McCormack, I just caught a preview screening with a Q&A with Australian director Sophie Hyde. It is written by Katy Brand.
This is good. Extremely so.
This is set over four meets, so each is like a little play within itself.
With the exemption of a scene where they're drinking coffee, and a one minute scene with minimal dialogue at the beginning of the film*, this is (primarily) all set in a hotel room. There is intimacy and character development- for both characters. There is also some full-frontal nudity and it's great to see Emma Thompson's Nancy grow into her own
Daryl McCormack as Leo Grande has a soft Irish accent, one of those people who's mere presence has a calming effect on you as the viewer.
Throughout the course of the film we get to see each characters back-story
I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did. There are also humorous moments and little nuances between them are quite touching.
* after speaking with the director, apparently the street where this sequence was filmed, in its day in the past was the place where all of the prostitutes gathered.

Thought this was brilliant! Has been a long while since I laughed this much at the cinema, but it was also incredibly touching at times.
Emma Thomson and Daryl McCormack both brilliant.
Five stars from me, top quality.

I saw this yesterday and thought that overall it was a *bad* film on an interesting premise with two excellent performances. Yes there are points where it's very tender and emotional, particularly where Nancy talks about her unsatisfying marriage, and it's very funny in some parts but overall they *really* want to make sure you get what they're trying to say and it is somewhat rammed down the audience's throat.
I really liked the way the film was centred around the 4 meetings and I think it would be interesting on stage with a lot of reworking. I saw it was written by Katy Brand, and I'm assuming it's *the* Katy Brand? I would have expected something more intelligent from her. On my way home I read a few reviews which all gave 3 stars and I would probably agree with that, purely because of Emma Thompson's performance but they were a lot more generous about the storyline than I ended up feeling.
It didn't drag because of the way it was sectioned into parts but I'm not sure it added anything to my way of thinking.

I thought it was quite good, putting aside for a moment the ethical implications and my own opinion of sex work/prostitution etc. Very brave of Thompson to go fully naked in several scenes. Must be hard to do at any age, and interesting that the guy doesn't get full frontal shots, while she does.

I watched the movie and he definitely goes full frontal, at the end when he's looking for *something* in his bag and turns around to discover that Nancy doesn't need it anymore. It's a blink and it's gone situation, but it's most definitely there |

Yes he does turn around but we don't see his lower body though, it's covered or only shown from the hips up (can't remember what). I am sure that at no point we see his bits, unlike for Emma Thompson.

I saw this yesterday as well and thought it was pretty terrific - Dame Emma got to do all the stuff that she's great at. As for the nudity, I think the point of it is that she grows to be proud of her body ( and herself) . He already is so there's no arc there - but for her - it's a big deal.

Watched this earlier in the week and thought it was excellent. Could very easily have been a play given that it's (for the most part) just the two leads in the one room but can understand there would be practical difficulties in adapting it for the stage! Great central performances and they worked really well with each other.
If I had one criticism it would be that the conflict that is introduced in the third act feels slightly contrived and not particularly necessary. Emma Thompson's character's conflict with herself - how she perceives herself and understands her own sexuality - is more than enough to sustain the film and it would have been the braver and bolder choice to let that remain at the forefront for the entire time.
But that's a comparatively minor point and this is still comfortably my favourite film of the year so far. The final moments felt quietly revolutionary.
