This year's Tony Award nominations have officially been announced! A Strange Loop, MJ and Paradise Square have emerged with the most nominations on the musical side of things, with The Lehman Trilogy racking up the most nominations in the play department. UK imports have done very well, with Six, Caroline or Change, Girl from the North Country, and Hangmen also making appearances on the list. As for snubs, Katrina Lenk was left out for her performance as Bobbie in Company. Mrs. Doubtfire and Funny Girl were also shut out, accumulating only one nomination each. It’s such a huge shame for Katrina not to be nominated, she was wonderful. But supposedly she’s come on a LOT since opening so if the voters saw her very early in the run it explains the snub.

Does anyone have a link on where I can watch the Tony Awards? I've been trying to find it on the CBS website, but it looks like you might need Paramount+ (and it's not possible to get this outside of the US I believe).

How this didn’t win for Best Original Score and Best Leading Actor in a musical (especially given who did win the latter especially) makes no sense to me. surely if the show won the award for Best Musical, the score is a pretty big part of that. And the demands of the role of Usher compared to the role of ‘MJ’? Jaw-dropping. There’s usually some sort of agenda going on with the Tony voting panel, but I cannot work out what it could have been this time. What an absolute mess of an opening number as well. Thinking back to the quality of the opening when Neil Patrick Harris was hosting, the number last night looked thrown together,under rehearsed and lacked any sense of humour or spectacle despite Ariana deBose’s prodigious talent. |

Jaquel Spivey has missed a large number of performances in the past couple of weeks since being nominated, so perhaps this has something to do with it. I can also see why it didn't win score. Have you seen MJ? It's a very demanding role. The show as a whole package works great, and the score is great too, but Six is arguably more "memorable". |

I’ve seen all three shows and the one that really made a big impression on me for all sorts of reason was ASL.
Would it be likely that an actor calling out a lot would cause him to lose a Tony? I genuinely don’t know about that.
In my humble opinion, there’s no comparison between the score of Six which I felt was very derivative of other shows and the ingenuity of the lyrics & music of ASL.
I think Six is likely to have a better chance of a lengthy commercial future than ASL as it’s a far more accessible show, but ASL is unique and profound work of the kind that is rarely seen on Broadway or the West End.

Not sure if it would, although the performance I attended, Jaquel went off half an hour in and his understudy Kyle Ramar Freeman came on and owned that role, and I’d say with stronger vocals too.

Interesting. I’m going to see ASL again shortly, so if JS really is missing shows regularly, maybe I’ll get to see Kyle. I wonder why Jaquel is calling out so much? It’s a very demanding part for a newcomer I guess. |

Did anybody watch this? Or (at least) see the Sondheim tribute? Apart from the opening number and about 10 seconds of Billy Porter’s ‘In Memoriam’ performance, I haven’t been able to locate any more material from the show at all. |

Oh. I saw about one minute of a video of Sondheim talking before Bernadette Peters can out and sang Children Will Listen from Into The Woods.

Whilst I enjoy Six and I’m really happy for that team to be recognised, I’m kinda stunned that it beat A Strange Loop for best original score.

For everyone wondering about Jaquel not winning. I had a feeling for a while now that Myles was going to win so that wasn’t a surprise to me at all. Jaquel has missed a LOT of performances in the past month or so, when the Tony Voters were invited to see the show, so that certainly contributed to his loss.

I don’t think there’s any comparison between Six ( which to me sounds very derivative,like a mash-up of The Spice Girls and bits of Hamilton) and the score of ALS. Also it’s weird that a show that wins for Best Musical and Best Book doesn’t then win Best Score, considering how much of the success of a musical is down to the score. |

I saw something on Twitter about the production team deciding for now that he won’t be performing at matinees as he was struggling to get through 2 shows. Not sure if he’s had covid or another illness that has affected his stamina but it seems like he could perform one show great but struggled to then perform the 2nd show and there were various reports of the show stopping and him being replaced with an understudy. It does seem like it’s a highly demanding role so I can’t see why they couldn’t have a permanent alternate for the matinees like they do for DEH here in London. But it does seem to be related to a health issue that maybe they’re hoping will improve soon. |
