Several unofficial news sources (no doubt all copying off eachother) in the last day or two referring to a Disney announcement that this is happening with a release date of Christmas 2018. To be called Mary Poppins Returns and starring Emily Blunt.

Including the BBC, on its news app 21 hours ago! Apparently it will debut on Christmas Day 2018 in the US and will also star Lin-Manuel Miranda. I'm intrigued and will follow this one with much interest.

It's been unofficial for a while but confirmed yesterday. Anything with Lin-Manuel Miranda gets my thumbs up!

Happy Emily Blunt is Mary, not so sure about Lin-Manuel Miranda though. Whatever the case it could be the first film in a very long time that will make me to go to the cinema (yes, I'm not expecting to go until the end of 2018 unless it's something I've worked on). If only the whole thing was released a year earlier chances are I'd be have worked on it, as it is I think I've got a 1% chance at the most. Dream project to work on if you ask me.

I'm pretty sure it's official, given that the rumours have been circulating for months and then LMM tweeted the other day with "I was waiting until it was official. It's official!". I had thought it was going to be unrelated to the Banks family though, and articles I've read since have suggested Jane and Michael are now adults and will be involved so I'm less sure about that. It could either be very beautiful, or a wasted opportunity that really would have worked better with a whole new family. We'll see when it comes out, I guess!

I think this is a huge mistake.
Much as I like Emily Blunt, Dame Julie Andrews IS Mary Poppins.
Big mistake. BIG mistake. Huge.

IS she though? 'Cos Laura Michelle Kelly is Mary Poppins. Scarlett Strallen is Mary Poppins. Lisa O'Hare is Mary Poppins. Ashley Brown is Mary Poppins. Zizi Strallen is Mary Poppins. You'd think as theatre fans we'd be more used to the idea of a new performer taking on an established role than people who only ever set foot in movie theatres...

I don't mind the idea of someone else playing the role. It just depends how well she can sing it. What other singing has Emily done?

A little movie called... gosh, Going In To The Woods or something? Oh right. Never wanted to see that, as I hated the show. Was she any good?

She was charming and delightful. I might worry if they were putting her forward for a stage musical, as she's only done plays on stage, but for a movie musical, I think she's a fantastic choice.

Well after a train wreck of Dick Van Dyke as a cockney, will we get a rapping Bert now?

It's the plot that worries me. The Banks Family facing arrest for failure to enrol Poppins in a pension scheme, the children being treated for Ipad addiction, Mary unable to work due to a mix up at the "background checks" office, and Burt's computer being taken away in a clear plastic bag for analysis... I thought the story was about how Mr Banks faced financial ruin after being caught using the dark web, and this is when Ms Poppins come to save the day.

They probably will change it again but at least it's way better than Mary Poppins 2. I still call films by the name we shot it as an get completely puzzled looks. I call them films, don't like the word movie, but I think I'm old fashioned.

Well after a train wreck of Dick Van Dyke as a cockney, will we get a rapping Bert now? I honestly didn't realise, for (literally) years that Dick Van Dyke was attempting a cockney accent in this. I just thought he was doing some sort of comedy accent. Was quite surprised when I found out...

I didn't either. As a child, you just accept things as they are and although it sounds nothing like a cockney accent it doesn't spoil the film and even in my opinion adds to its charms.

Would have preferred they use the book title of Mary Poppins Comes Back...Mary Poppins Returns just sounds weird.

Would have preferred they use the book title of Mary Poppins Comes Back...Mary Poppins Returns just sounds weird. Of all the options available in the Stock Subtitle section of TV Tropes, "Returns" is certainly one of the less interesting possibilities.
