I'm guessing the final two will be announced tomorrow. No, they have to go through the rounds with one person getting eliminated each week providing three months of entertainment before we get to the last two pairings

I'm guessing the final two will be announced tomorrow. Don't forget they'll have one or two unannounced in stand-by, in the event of any injury, like they did with Kelvin Fletcher who only went on to with the bloody thing! And good he was too!

One final name for the list. Helen Skelton.
I have actively avoided her since her woeful efforts during the 2012 Olympic coverage.
Certainly not one I will be hoping will make it very far in the competition

Helen had been rumoured for some time. Out of the final 15 I ahve heard of 9 of them. Not sure how that compares to previous years but soem are hardly celebrities.Although the current definition of celebrity seems to have altered substantially from my youth!

Will it be Kaye Adams or Helen Skelton who annoys me most this year? Only including Nadine Dorries could make it worse.....Still Tess will be there to outdo them when it comes to constant irritation and charmless, talented vacuity.

Very competitive, but her height may put her at a disadvantage.
On the most recent run of that Channel 5 farm programme, she basically showed her husband what an idiot he is. She'll be able to do that x10 on Strictly. "Could we maybe go a couple of inches higher Vicky?" Good for her.
There is also a theatre link. She takes over from Laura Whitmore, the famous actress, tomorrow morning on Five Live.

I didn't realise, until I checked to see what the fuss was all about, that Helen Skelton is a trained tap dance teacher
That is really pushing the limits as to what level of dance experience contestants should have for Strictly
I know it is a different sort of dance but it does give her a headstart in terms of using her body and learning routines.

But oxfordsimon on the flip side could this not work against her? Let me explain. If she has this experience, does this not mean there might be a higher expectation of her from her partner and from the judges? It could also be harder for her because if she knows how to dance and has rhythm, then she may have to unlearn what she already knows in order to perfect the routine set for her. Just a thought....

It is an advantage in all respects other than it sets expectations higher for her.
In physical terms, she knows what it is like to learn routines, rehearse them and so forth. She will have to learn new techniques but she certainly has a big headstart compared to people like Tony Adams.
There are others this year with dance experience but not at this level.
The former Pussycat Doll member who was a contestant a few years ago was very unpopular with the public and a large part of that was her extensive past dance experience.

Helen was also on the 2012 Strictly Christmas special with Artem. JB Gill won that programme.

Actors have a head start in terms of learning as they are used to having to process a lot of information quickly, musicians have a head start because they can hear the beat and have rhythm... I could go on, but those are two examples of why the "experience" argument restricted to dance background only is a complete fallacy. Pretty much all the contestants have some form of relevant past experience. And tap is completely different to ballroom, particularly in posture. Past dance experience usually isn't half as helpful as most people seem to think it is. Too many people buy the lazy "she's a dancer" cries from the tabloids without actually thinking more about it. Besides, I'd much rather watch good dancers, so as far as I am concerned the more experience, the better!

It really isn't a complete fallacy - it is just your opinion. But as you always like to make negative comments about things I post on Strictly, I would suggest that we just ignore one another from this point forward.

The idea, from day 1 has been that they can’t dance before they start to train. That’s the “ concept” and is how it is sold to us. I think that this is what most of the viewers think.

The show has always had contestants with some kind of training. Claire Sweeney was in the first year, she trained at Italia Conti. Audiences definitely prefer contestants who go on a journey and develop, but having people with some element of previous experience isn't a new development, it's just picked up on more now.

Strictly Come Dancing in the UK
Dancing With The Stars in the US and Australia and (I believe) other parts of the world.
I'm just curious, as all others are based upon the UK concept, does anyone know the name has changed?

I'm not sure it is really? It's a show about celebrities learning to dance ballroom, not dance full stop. I don't think they've ever claimed none of them can dance at all. They'd have a very narrow pool of celebrities if that was the case. Many people will think whatever narrative the tabloids push, which has increasingly been the "experience is bad" narrative, but it wasn't always in the early days, even though the public loved an underdog back then too. The tabloids werent as vicious in the early series. I've never really understood complaints about it not being a level playing field, as it never could be unless you disqualify everyone who has ever taken a dance class, music or acting lesson in their life.

The launch show is being recorded next Wednesday, 7 September, in front of a live studio audience.
Get ready for the return of inane cheering at the start of routines, and standing ovations at the end. It just hasn't been the same without either!

It may have been mentioned elsewhere, but as lynette has mentioned the original Come Dancing programme I wanted to flag up the Blackpool's Dance Fever programme which was shown on BBC1 last week. Gloriously, for those of us who remember Come Dancing in its 1990s incarnation, it featured the many time Latin dance champions Donnie Burns and Gaynor Fairweather for whom the term 'larger than life' might have been invented. Donnie and Gaynor are clearly still big figures on the scene although I guess they may well be jealous of the success of their one time fellow competitor Shirley Ballas (in those days partnered with her then husband Corky). Being almost 60 I also remember Come Dancing in earlier days when a fixture was Peggy Spencer's Penge Latin Formation team. It seems that at that time Penge was the epicentre of the ballroom world!

Sadly most episodes have been junked* but I have a 1976 episode and it has not dated well. It assumes a good working knowledge of ballroom (probably back in 1976 more people would have that knowledge) so it's difficult to know how it is scored. I agree that the formation part is a relative highlight. *If anyone is interested nothing from the 50s and 60s. The first existing episode is the final of series 19 in 1974, next two from 1976 then nothing until 1982 where there are still large gaps.

I thought I might have dreamt this but a quick google confirmed that the Two Ronnies did a sketch in 1972 in which they played dancers in a dance formation team. There is a bad quality video of it here:
The humour hasn't aged well but it just goes to show what a hold Come Dancing had on the national psyche back in the 1970s. Peggy Spencer was a fascinating woman who - among much else - taught Nureyev the tango for the Ken Russell film Valentino.
