I’m not sure when RTD decided he no longer wanted to be known as a writer of prodigious talent and instead became a puffed-up, preachy prig. It’s sad to watch.

Of course he isn’t, the BBC pay his wages. Quite an alarming unhinged rant against Tory voters there: “You are voting for murderers, bastards, abusers and liars." Lapped up by his devoted followers. If anyone on the right gave a speech like that like that he’d call them fascists. "Murderers" is the only one of those I'd question. Legally I believe the charge would be corporate manslaughter. Bastards, abusers, and liars - no arguments there.

Yes he's been very outspoken on this of late. Fair enough though the goverment have given no actual convincing reasons for why they are pursuing this path other than a general hatred of public service broadcasters as it doesn't make their doners money and have the audacity to criticise them which this goverment, for all its supposed support of free speech, refuses to accept. Even a good chunk of the Tory party was taken by surprise and reacted uneasily when these policies were announced. Not helped by Dorries being so bad at making any kind of convincing case. RTD is so well regarded he doesn't need the BBC, he's currently working with ITV and his new Doctor Who is run is under the umbrella of an independent production company. Yeah murderers is a big strong but the rest is a fair description of this goverment. Doubt it will make much of an impact though, the goverment will just attack it as, the meaningless buzz word,'woke' and most of their voters will fall into line as more of the fabric of British life is destroyed. To think Conservative used to be about preserving things.

It's entirely a dogmatic hatred of anything state-owned. I first became aware of this with the railway privatisation. They claimed it was to make the railways more efficient, but in advance of the full privatisation they attempted to prove the point by making InterCity profitable, failed to do so despite stacking everything in their favour, and went ahead anyway because it was never about making the railways profitable. It was about making them private no matter what it took.
One of the things I find infuriating about the Conservatives is that they claim to be the party of low taxation. In a sense they are, in that they try to cut taxes, but there's nothing intrinsically bad about tax. Tax is how stuff gets paid for, and lowering tax either means cutting services and investment in the country or it means hiding the real cost behind other things so the public still ends up paying but it's taken after it goes through their bank accounts instead of before. You don't get something for nothing. Either the Conservatives do less for the UK or they hide the real cost. The real issue with tax is efficiency, and the Conservatives don't have a great record in that respect.

People who work in the biggest TV and radio company in the country get paid good salaries, shocking.

There is no way on earth that anyone could ever convince me of Gary Linekar being worth £1.4m of license fee payers money for being a glorified football pundit.

Most earn £200k or less and it is surprising how few get more than this for the quality of broadcasting the BBC provides across all mediums.
The ones that do are the top talent, bring in the viewers and are the sort of people who make the TV licence great value.
Why do we want to make the BBC the equivalent of hospital radio, many of the ones on the list are in reality working below their market value.

The High Earning list is false as it doesn't include the likes of Strictly, EastEnders, Casualty etc. Also some presenters/talent are paid via their companies so not listed. But a sports presenter like Gary Lineker being top of the list is amusing, would Jimmy Hill have been top of the list back in 1970's or 1980's I doubt it.
Also we ask WTF is Stephen Nolan?

He’s a very average 5 Live presenter, but he has a regional accent so that’s probably adding £100k at least to his salary. But why the hell he’s on more than Emily Maitlis or Sophie Raworth or a raft of others in the £200-£300k category is a mystery.

He does a lot of Northern Ireland specific stuff, he's a big name over there.
Though I think even there they were quite surprised when the relative size of his salary was revealed.

I don't know how big BBC Ulster is but he's not Terry Wogan. For thast money you'd think he'd built the peace wall.

It's quite interesting to read the salaries, but most commentary comes down to people being surprised that presenters they're not keen on are massively popular with other people.
It's likely the salaries are less than, but loosely competitive than their commercial equivalents, so it's always interesting to see self-proclaimed fans of market forces get upset that market forces mean that Gary Lineker's agent can negotiate him a high salary. It's apparent that being a popular entertainment presenter is worth more in salary terms than having the skills and knowledge to be a good hard news journalists and presenter, and as frustrating as that may be, it isn't itself news.

Good luck to GL if he has a good agent but he is effectively a sports presenter but if the satellite channels would pay that much like for like then I guess that is the market value. Alan Shearer also is very high up the list and had a very lucrative playing career but I guess if they want them on the beeb they have to pay market rates.
Several presenters most notably Dan Walker have left beeb as apparently they had to declare outside earnings for conferences they hosted/talks they gave and this was published and there was flak off it. On C5 News Dan earns more and is free to do outside gigs without all earnings being published.

With the BBC are adopting self ID, I wonder if they let me off the licence fee if I told them that my telly now identifies as being a microwave oven?

I wonder if GL could actually do what Gaby Roslin ( spelling?) did last night which is control and organise three punters on the spot ad the other stuff and know her stuff and be enthusiastic all at the same time? Or Clare Balding for that matter;she is a brilliant sports presenter. Yes, bitter and twisted here but he must know where the bodies are buried.

Or Clare Balding for that matter;she is a brilliant sports presenter. Yes, bitter and twisted here but he must know where the bodies are buried. One crucial aspect not mentioned here is [global] reach. If comparing Sports Presenters specifically I presume you mean Gabby Logan? Although not a metric to be solely replied upon, but the numbers do speak for themselves: Gary Linekar: Twitter 8.5m / Insta 1.1m Gabby Logan: Twitter 449.2k / Insta 158k Clare Balding: Twitter 694.2k / Insta 60.9K Linekar is often seen presenting live on-site, just like Logan & Balding. I also presume, if your referring to last night's Women's Euros coverage, you mean pundits, not punters, as from what I saw it was all hosted from their studio space, and bringing punters into that environment is a fairly big security risk. As improvised as it all looks, whilst there's a degree of freedom in the responses, it's rehearsed, scripted, timed and kept all on schedule by a little voice in her ear, like all live Presenters they're following commands. And then aside from international appeal and how they present on screen, there's the little matter of behind the scenes what a person can be like to work with, but that's all I'll say there.

Yes, very sorry for getting the name wrong and also pundits and thanks for the response. Looking at followers, yes I suppose it matters these days. Of course I know she has the ear piece going on. But I still think she does a good job with knowledge and enthusiasm. As for your last little hint..well. I’m not in the business at all so have no idea. But I would avoid that kind of comment both here and in the wider world.

Apparently Sue Barker was regarded with awe by the people working with her because she refused to use a autocue - it was all prepped in advance so she could have natural conversations on the night with the pundits, and the earpiece was giving her the timing and match updates live.
People always get very upset over presenter pay but I do believe them when they say that it’s a lot harder to do than it looks! As ever, people who are paid the most are the best, and thus they make it look easy.

For those who aren't aware, Elon Musk agreed to an interview - or discussion - with the BBC. Initially it was about Twitter's decision to add a label to the BBC main Twitter account though the interaction does branch out. It's difficult to find a balanced version - not least on the BBC website. Fwiw, this is the best I have seen so far (for the most part letting the parties speak for themselves). One person here is well-prepared >>
