Encanto

I don't recognise this at all. It was two-star for me. Weird, unlikeable narrative with dubious ethics, and dreadful music. Disney has really lost its way.

I don't know your background so forgive me, but I wonder if actually Disney hasn't lost its way but is actually trying to tell stories that appeal to different groups of people. So in the eyes of many, seeing a fantasy story packed with South American traditions and references could mean the world to them, but might not be as appealing or recognisable to others who grew up on the very white very Western cartoons they used to make.

I guess we agree to disagree!

Sitting in a cinema now waiting for it to start

Saw this last night and have been thinking about it most of the day.

This actually wasn't too bad and can easily sit along side any other Disney classic.

Is the female lead Mirabel a Disney princess? No, but she has the same determination and fighting spirit as either Merida (Brave) or Ana (Frozen). The film will ne HUGE in Spanish speaking communities. (Possibly) bigger that Coco that cam before it.

If I had to find a major fault it would be that in the first 15 minutes when all of the characters are being set up, there's just too much happening, so you're constantly questioning who is that person again in relation to Mirabel.

With that in mind, it may take a couple of viewings just to take it all in.

Clearly a lot of thought has gone into this (I believe Lin-Manuel Miranda worked on it for 5 years!) and there is lot of colour.

Even though they're animated characters, it's great to see such diversity, with white, brown and black characters, young and old.

Set in Columbia it's also great to see some of its native animals represented on screen- a capybara, a tapir, a jaguar, colourful toucans and several South American coatis

I think the songs are growers. As mentioned by Mark in the post above We Don't Talk About Bruno is great!

There's also one song, like One Day More in Les Miserables, where several characters are singing over each other.

Towards the end of the film there is a beautiful song however it is sung in Spanish.

Kinda makes me wish I could speak Spanish just so I could understand what they're saying.

The whole time I was watching it was thinking I wonder how many years it will be before we see this staged? I know one thing, when it does, it's gonna take a heck of a lot special effects.

Watched with the kids which might have helped or hindered my ability to work out who was who at the beginning. Kept me entertained, loved the riot of colour and shapes and sizes of varying people. I too thought could see on stage though yes challenging effects required. The teens sang to it and the smalls danced. Not as good as Coco I thought which was really special but thumbs up all round.

I thought this was wonderful. I often didn’t have a clue what anyone was saying in the songs, but it has a lot of heart and the melodies are catchy. So good to see Disney embracing other cultures finally

It’s absurd how good the animation is in this movie. It’s stunning! Really enjoyed watching this the other day. Great characters, songs and story.

We Don't Talk About Bruno has become the top 3 song in the UK, I'm a fan of the song and I did not expect to achieve that!
