Can anyone recommend a similar forum to this, but for cinephiles? I tried an international one a few months ago but it was unmoderated, very toxic and full of immaturity.
One of my concerns with UK cinemas is the shoddy design and technical standards found in many screens, and it would be nice to have somewhere to vent about this with sympathetic fellow geeks and cineastes.
There also appears to be no theatremonkey equivalent for cinema screens, which I'd love to rectify. You can visit screen 17 of a multiplex with no idea whether the screen will be twenty metres wide or two, whether it will be flat or curved, whether it will be silver or white, whether the scope (2.39 aspect ratio) movie will actually be shown letter-boxed rather than wider as the director intended. Then there's matters of masking, curtains, seat comfort, sightlines, audio systems, accoustics, sound leakage, projection systems, luminosity, ambient noise, ambient lighting, customer service, quality and value of snacks, etc.
Interestingly, the French have complex technical design standards for cinema auditoria which go some way to ensuring a good view from every seat.
Of course, it's just a film, I hear you say. But, just as with theatre, the same production can be vastly improved by watching from the good seats.
