Some people are asking why Robert Lindsey wasn't in the supporting category. Isn't he in the lead category as he is the leading male and Sutton is the leading female. Otherwise you would have Eddie Redmayne nominated for support as many people would believe Sally Bowles is the lead performer.

Moonface is traditionally considered a supporting role for character actors, Bill McCutcheon for instance won the Tony Award for best supporting actor in a musical for it in 1988. I'm not sure if the character plays a more prominent role in this version of the show than he did in the Lincoln Center/Drury Lane revival, but star-billing probably played the trick here. The Emcee is not necessarily a great example because it was written as a supporting role and Joel Grey won the Tony for best supporting actor in a musical (same for the Oscar, but the movie is very different). By the time it was revived on Broadway in 1987, Joel Grey was the big star returning to his iconic role so he was labelled as leading actor for award season (plus the Broadway "above the title" rule, I think). Star casting and direction choices have made the Emcee the star of the show, but it wouldn't necessarily be absurd to consider it a supporting role tbh

I think it would be a wrong categorization to consider the Emcee as supporting, just because he doesn't have "character scenes" as such. It's a part that very much calls for a "leading actor" performance as well, much more so than Cliff.

Billy Crocker is usually considered the leading male role in Anything Goes, and Howard McGillin was nominated for Best Lead Actor in a Musical when he played opposite Lupone in 1987, and Bill McCutcheon playing Moonface was a Featured role, though he did won the Tony. As for the MC, it won Joel Grey a Supporting Oscar, a featured Tony, and a newcomer BAFTA. It's an award winning role, but which category it belongs in is clearly up for debate.

This is the first Disney film from Animation since TLK to be nominated for both Olivier and a Tony for best musical

Feels like quite a personal sleight against Andrew Lloyd Webber. I know Cinderella has been on a rocky road but to be so completely snubbed when it's one of the only real "original" musicals seems silly. Its based on a story that has been done so many times before, that its hardly original, and whilst the score might be new, there nothing original in there. BTTF seems more original than Cinderella.

Ah now, let's all be honest here. I'm not a Lloyd Webber fan by any means but if that exact same show had been written by anyone else it would have had more nominations. I'm not saying it necessarily deserves them. But it would have had them.

ALW has written such wonderful shows, when watching a Stephen Ward or Cinderella, compared to Evita or Sunset Boulevard, you can see why he is getting snubbed nowadays. There is no comparison.

Reading what musicals are performing this year reminds me just how depressing the West End currently is I guess we should be grateful that every theatre has a show on/booked in coming out of such a terrible time. The other shame is that Cinderella, with an original score, was so heavily snubbed. Sure, it may not be the best musical in the world, but it doesn't scream encouragement for original shows to come into the West End. There is a real lack of turnover with a lot of hold-outs from before the pandemic, meaning there is little wriggle room for anything to transfer in. There is a real lack of mid-sized musical houses available.

I agree with you on lots of points Mark especially on theatres not been dark. Even pre covid I did find the state of West End musicals to be depressing.

Has there been any reporting on what numbers will be performed at the Olivier's? More shows/guests have been announced to appear; I hope Cabaret will be Eddie Redmayne (and cast) doing Wilkommen - it would be a good opener! But also might be unlikely as he’s left the cast now.

I’m just so bummed that they still have not placed it at 9 PM PRIME TIME LIVE! Just like the BAFTAs and the Tony Awards.
I wish the broadcast rights will be with the BBC again in the coming years. ITV is a great channel but BBC has the brand recall globally. I think they will stream the ceremony on YouTube for non-UK viewers but I wish the Oliviers should live up to the prestige the awards carries. Support for live theatre is really needed.

Streamed live on YouTube for viewers outside of the UK but actual UK residents have to wait until after it’s finished to then just watch a highlights show. It’s absolutely ridiculous when they’re the biggest awards for UK THEATRE. As Ray from Everybody’s Talking About Jamie would say, it boils my piss.

So who knows!!!

If Amy Lennox is singing I doubt we'll see the original cast perform at the Oliviers. Same thing happened at the 1988 Tony Awards with Into the Woods, Bernadette was in the audience while Phylicia Rashad played "her" part

Will we get to see the musical numbers tonight on ITV? I think that in previous years we don't always get to see them, just the awards and speeches.

If anything it’s the other way round isn’t it? A bunch of musical numbers with the cut down award ceremony in between them. And then a “these people also won some stuff” montage tacked onto the end.
