They also didn't like Macbeth. Saoirse Ronan snubbed(?) after all that hype I personally agree that Akiya Henry is the only performance worth nominating from that production. Yeah. Ronan did not do anything interesting at all, just surprised at her being left out, because the noise indicated otherwise.

Completely agree - I don't know much about orchestrations, but thought Carousel's sounded fantastic (I personally ended up really liking the concept overall anyway, but get that it's not to everyone's taste) (Edit: not sure where the quote went...)

Nice to see the Bush Theatre get two noms.
Pride and Prejudice (Sort of) was robbed!

I appreciate that these things are, to some degree, subjective but all I can say is... Ooof. In my opinion, there are some VERY odd choices this year.

Bloody hell. Over the moon for Charles Edwards (not biased at all).
But he's up against Ben Daniels (already a holder of an Olivier previously) who had a stonking 2021 with Normal Heart. Quite the unenviable position. Eek!

Very surprised Stuart Thompson wasn't nominated for Spring Awakening. Also surprised that Constellations received a Best Director nom - it's the same production as 2013 and it didn't receive a nom for it back then.

I think Cinderella can rightly feel agrived. It is far from perfect but it seems harsh for a completely new musical not to get a nod when Back to the Future did. Back to the Future is a great spectecal and deserves design awards but all the good tunes were from the film. The new songs that actually makes it a musical as opposed to a play with songs and underscoring, weren't much to write home about.
Frozen is a very good musical film well translated to the stage so I'm fine with its nomination and I haven't seen the rest so can't comment on them.
I'm not sure Cinderella should win, but it deserved to make the shortlist.

Back to the Future also has the 80% of the acting parroted from the film. Someone from Spring Awakening would have been more deserving.

Very happy for Theodora & Edward Watson (although The Dante Project should have received a nod too). There are some of the usual Olivier oddities (eg: the 7 tigers) and I'm surprised for all the love for Back to the Future (but not for Roger Bart). The Best score & orchestra mixed category still remains an abomination, but on the whole there are no big surprises

It wouldn't be the Oliviers without everything being a little bizarre!
On the plus side of things, I was absolutely over the moon to see The Invisible Hand nominated for Outstanding Achievement in Affiliate Theatre. It was far and away the best play I saw in 2021, so to see it recognised was both a surprise and a delight.
Also wonderful to see Frozen, Back to the Future, Cabaret and Anything Goes receive a lot of love. In relation to the performances, it's unsurprising but still great to see Jessie Buckley, Eddie Redmayne, Sutton Foster, Robert Lindsay and Hugh Coles all nominated. All of the aforementioned performers gave some of the best portrayals I have ever seen, and all would make worthy winners.
On a different note, I was among those disappointed to see Cinderella snubbed in so many different categories. It seems a little disheartening that we're not rewarding shows with original scores, though I appreciate that the musical is divisive. At the very least, I found it a little odd that the score was snubbed in the Outstanding Achievement in Music, though as others have pointed out, that category is strange to say the least. I would also have liked to have seen Carrie Hope Fletcher nominated.
I may be alone in this, but I was also a little dismayed to see Haydn Oakley snubbed for his performance in Anything Goes. I thought his performance was one of the clear stand-outs in that production, and I personally would have nominated him over Gary Wilmot.
Overall, not the worst set of nominations, but still some arguably odd choices.

very surprised Robert Lindsay is in best actor (would have thought he'd be certain to win the supporting category). I agree. I assumed he'd be named in the supporting category since his role 'supports' the female lead, but I suppose without a traditional male romantic lead, his is the leading male role. (If I'm remembering the show correctly...)

Delighted that Cinderella has been snubbed so unanimously. Can’t begrudge VHB’s nomination though as at least she tries with terrible material.
Delighted for all of Anything Goes nominations- Gary Wilmots is a bit transparent though.
Really hoping Carly wins for supporting. Sensational star performance that elevated that role.
Was Lily Allen that good in her play? Don’t remember any particularly positive reviews for her performance.
Life of Pi’s technical awards well deserved too and the lead actor who was really terrific.

I too would have nominated Haydn over Gary. Gary was very good, but it didn't stand out in any way, whereas Haydn's performance was a definite highlight.

Gary Wilmot got this year's Petula Clarke nomination and it's embarrassing. What a waste of a slot. Lindsay should've been nominated for supporting instead of Wilmot and instead of lead.

My assumption would be that the best Actress nominations will be Sutton Foster, Jessie Buckley, Beverley Knight and Steph McKeon. Dependant on whether she's in as supporting or lead Gabrielle Brooks (?) from Get Up Stand Up might take the fifth Nicely Done!!

That reminds me of when David Bedella was nominted for playing the dad in In The Heights. And then he actually won it. I still dont understand it.

If we are going by reviews for Best Musical, The ranking would be like:
Frozen Back to the Future Get Up, Stand Up! Moulin Rouge! The Drifter Girls
Or am I missing anything? A Lackluster year, for sure.

So Robert Lindsay nominated as a leading actor but Carly Mercedes Dyer nominated as a supporting actor ? How on earth does that make any sense ? Both supporting actors.

Haven’t done a full statistics and records but so far, here are my observations for the performer nominees:
- Each performer category has at least one returning nominee while the rest are first timers, except for Best Supporting Actress in a Play.
- The nominees have become more racially and gender diverse. At least a nonwhite performer is nominated across all acting categories. More openly queer performers this year too. (Which is not surprising considering The Normal Heart has a queer-majority cast) I’ve tried correlating with the past Olivier nominees and it’s very white, with some Adrian Lester nomination. This is especially true for the drama categories.
- Do we really have a more detailed information about the SOLT membership? The Oscars do publish their statistics of their membership and the list of new invites every year, and the Academy’s more international membership has swayed non-English language films into top contenders (Drive My Car this year, for instance). I wish there is more transparency in the British showbiz industry. Is the BAFTA more secretive too?

If Back to the Future wins best original score I think I'll officially be considering the Oliviers discredited for the rest of time. How it can even be nominated in that category is absolutely beyond me.

Feels like quite a personal sleight against Andrew Lloyd Webber. I know Cinderella has been on a rocky road but to be so completely snubbed when it's one of the only real "original" musicals seems silly.

The best new play category must be the weakest in the history of the award

I know Cinderella has been on a rocky road but to be so completely snubbed when it's one of the only real "original" musicals seems silly. Why is it silly? The nominations are no more than a certain set of people's opinions of artistic merit. They aren't obliged to like something just because it has been written and happens to be original.
