The prevailing argument seems to be that if the police waded in it would only make things worse, which is probably true, but I do think it's ridiculous that the fans are just allowed to behave however they want because there's a match on. Trashing a city centre and making life miserable for the people who live and work there isn't acceptable no matter how big the game is. Water cannon the lot of them

It’s absolutely fine to support England and NOT act like a knobhead.

Many football "fans" aren't the brightest bunch. So many drunken yobs. Consistently England fans embarrass the nation, as do many fans of other countries (racist/homophobic chanting and "ultra" hooligans are endemic across Eastern Europe and even very affluent parts of the West) So I 100% take that point and side of the argument, it's an embarrassment to see. On a wider note though, football is our national sport and adored by tens of millions who don't behave this way. This is the biggest England game - or football game generally - in living memory for many (most?) people. And, of course, the tiny minority who cause a problem aren't doing it because they're football fans. They're doing it because they're bellends. If they weren't trashing the place because of football they'd be trashing the place because of something else.
One of my neighbours has had an England flag hanging out their window for several years now. For them this is the greatest moment in English football since 1966.

As I say, some baffling and very extreme comments. I don't think the use of water cannon is any more appropriate than it would be against Extinction Rebellion protestors, where more than 600 people were arrested for alleged crimes such as assaulting police officers, criminal damage and the like. You're always going to get idiots spoiling it for everyone else in large public gatherings.
The police going in gung-ho is really not going to fix anything.
In the same way most people went to peaceably protest about climate change, most people are there to peaceably enjoy a huge day in our national sporting history.
Sadly, some of the same thugs who enjoy getting drunk and causing trouble probably attended both events. Any excuse to be rowdy and a cause a nuisance.

Like you, I just wish these "people" would grow up and take some responsibility.

Water cannon the lot of them.

Steve, I am against the anti-social behaviour as much as you are. I am taking a wider view and not tarring everyone with the same brush. A few thousand people acting like idiots does not a society make. You've said your piece several times about the water cannon now. Thank you for your input. I just would prefer to avoid the days of the police having pitched battles with large groups on the streets of London ever again. As I say, in any large public gathering you are going to have idiots behaving reprehensibly.

Anyway… moving on… What’s your favourite England Song? As in singles released to support England in football tournaments. It’s Coming Home? World In Motion? Vindaloo?

World in Motion!!! 🤣 It's actually a good song, despite being a football song. It's Coming Home is a classic, mainly because I love The Lightning Seeds

To judge by the cheer from the neighbours on one side of the house, followed a minute later by the cheers from the neighbours on the other side who appear to have a delayed feed, it's started well.

The referee and linesmen look fab in the hot pink. Gareth Southgate has an understated (yet stylish) light overcoat in black.
Is someone actually STYLING this thing?

Gotta say even as a straight man, I've always thought Bjorn Kuipers (the referee) has a stylish older fox look about him. He can even carry off the hot pink!

Lovely to see William, Kate and George celebrating the goal with hugs and excitement. How lovely was that?
