Cameron Mackintosh’s "new" production of The Phantom of the Opera will have its Australian premiere at the Sydney Opera House in September 2021. Starring Josh Piterman as the Phantom.
This is the "new" production that has previously toured the US & UK x

Interesting. There was also mention recently of a production to be staged on Sydney Harbour - although, now I can only find one article about that and it's behind a paywall, so who knows. If that did happen, it would be interesting to see if the show could be done well in that way, without as much ability to control the conditions of the outdoor space - lighting, ambient noise etc - so as to create the spooky atmosphere. I don't think it's been done that way before, but I could be wrong.

Purists hated it. It was the first version I ever saw so I thought it was great, but when I saw the original version understood more fully why some hadn’t been happy. It depends what perspective people are seeing it from.

I don't know about the availability of venues but whilst it's (truly) a beautiful building, but being familiar with it, The Sydney Opera House does see to be a strange venue to host.
There is a Concert Hall and an Opera Hall- the two big shells facing the bridge- and two small theatres on the side.
There are more suitable venues in which it could run but again, I don't know the availability of venues.

(Understand if mods want to move this to yet another thread eventually) At this rate I'm far more excited for the other Sydney Harbour production, and the possibilities of a completely new concept designed for a non-traditional (and indeed, outdoor) theatre environment. Please have a peep at this atrocious Christine Masquerade dress used for the US Tour. It looks store-brought from Party City. Sweet Mother of the Divine Jesus. That is atrocious. And people wonder why people get upset. This is a terrible imitation of the art of Maria Bjorson. It's like they bought a Phantom Costume from Aliexpress or Wish. Would people be happy to go to the Louvre and see a cartoon of the Mona Lisa billed as the Original Mona Lisa with new frame?

The show is being produced by Opera Australia, that is why it is playing the opera house as this has been the norm with their touring musicals over the last decade. There will also be a production on the harbour this time next year, much like their dual productions of west side (touring and harbour) in 2019. Otherwise, both other major theatres in Sydney are already filled with Hamilton at the Lyric and Come from Away at the Capitol (followed by OA’s production of the 2013 byway Cinderella). The Theatre Royal is slated to open in September with a play followed by two musicals already booked in.
The main reason Phantom is happening is because the company needs a hit that will bring revenue, and it is also the reason they are just shipping the available US tour set over to minimise costs.
But, hey. Shows are shows and it means jobs for the industry regardless...

Sorry, I was talking about September when POTO will open. Frozen is still playing in Sydney until May.

Well this production is produced my OA and Michael Cassel (who has a close relationship with Cam Mac and Disney) and the world tour is currently produced by GWB. So not only would GWB not want to give up the set to outside producers, but they probably have another season planned between Sep ‘21 and Mar ‘22 when this production will run. So, with the overall production costs in royalties being smaller due to it being the new Cam Mac in-house production (no royalties to Bjornson or Prince estates etc) as well as the set being available due to the US tour having finished I assume this would make the most monetary sense for the company. That is just my opinion due to my knowledge of the Aus industry as is currently stands.

It’s clear the new tour costumes were a knock off of her designs plus say the boat etc.
Would the estates not have a claim?
Or is it like Primark who knock-off fashion houses and get away with it once there are five differences?

Yes the latter thought made me fear for this. Phillips doesn't understand the material. The fact he thought (and publicly stated) that LND was written as a direct sequel to Gaston Leroux's original novel (rather than to ALW's original show) says it all...
