Dustin Hoffman will be returning to Broadway in the revival of the play "Our Town" directed by Bartlett Sher and produced by Scott Rudin. No word on dates or other casting. Our Town - Dustin Hoffman

The fury this is inspiring on some of the US chat boards is amusing.

Why fury?

Several reasons: 1. Some sexual assault and harassment allegations surfaced about him a year or so ago. 2. Uninspired casting of a old white male in a play that easily supports non-traditional choices. 3. That he is doing an old and often revived play instead of using his star power to amplify new works or up-and-coming playwrights. All three obviously are valid criticisms, particularly #1, but the intensity of some of the comments around #3 amuse me. As some who have spoken in support of him have noted, the guy is 82 and doesn't need to be on Broadway at all. His presence in a classic show is likely to help attract tourist audiences when things get up and running again.

Just an amusing tit bit about Dustin Hoffman.
A couple of years back Sheridan Smith was appearing in Hedder Gabbler at the Old Vic- which an ex-colleague went to see.
As the bell rang to return to your seats for Act II to commence and the lights dimmed a man came shuffling through to get to his seat and inadvertedly stood in my ex-colleague's foot. Just as he was about to say something (without trying to cause too much of a scene given the circumstances) my ex-colleague realised that the man who had stood on his foot in the dark whilst shuffling back to his seat was Dustin Hoffman.
Incidentally Dustin Hoffman then went onto cast Sheridan Smith in his direction debut film Quartet.

I went to the LFF premiere of Quartet, I liked the film but it was more memorable to me for walking the red carpet about 20 feet from Hoffman and trying not to be too obvious about staring at him, but really: he’s done nothing of note in the last 20 years or so apart from Quartet (does anyone remember Last Chance Harvey with any great affection?) and this just seems to be him showing he’s still available for weddings (I won’t tempt fate and say funerals in case the not so poor old sod keels over tonight) and bar mitzvah’s and hoping the great public, or those with serious spending money at least, have forgotten about those allegations.
With regards to what he’s chosen to be in: he’s Dustin Hoffman, he’s had a very long career, so what if it’s particularly challenging. I doubt I’ll be going to NYC any time soon, and if I did, I wouldn’t pay the hundreds of dollars they will be doubtlessly charging to see this, I just hope for those that DO go that it’s better than the stuff Pacino has been doing on Broadway in recent years.
