Sad loss. Only ever saw him on stage once, in the original production of Pinter's "Moonlight" but his career in all media has been a splendid one. RIP.

Always brought great gravitas and realism to every role he played.
Remember thinking how powerful he was even in something as light and frothy as the family film,Loch Ness,as the Keeper Of The Loch.
A great character actor.

A super actor. First play I saw at Stratford was his RIII. Even now I can see him sitting high up dangling and swinging his legs gleefully as he manipulated the London citizens, like an evil gnome.

I just thought he was having a proper retirement like Gene Hackman which is why he hadn’t been in much in recent years, such a shame to hear he was suffering from Parkinson’s. My knowledge of his work is pretty much limited to the LOTR films, Alien and Time Bandits but he was top quality in whatever I saw him in. R.I.P.

Sad news, but he leaves a great body of work behind him, and managed to avoid the scenery-chewing-Hollywood-villain typecasting that befell many of his also-excellent contemporaries.

I saw him in The Homecoming at the Comedy Theatre in early 2000's. He was one actor I had always wanted to see on stage. His finest work was undoubtedly on stage but he achieved success across all genres and certainly lived a full life.

I saw him in The Homecoming at the Comedy Theatre in early 2000's. He was one actor I had always wanted to see on stage. His finest work was undoubtedly on stage but he achieved success across all genres and certainly lived a full life. ”Lived a full life”. Yes. The obituaries were a bit of an eye-opener. I think the only time I saw him was as King Lear at NT. Excellent performance. Slightly uncomfortable experience though, knowing he’d had severe stage fright, willing him to succeed. |

When I said "A full life" it was in reference to him having been married 4 times and a 15 year relationship with another woman. I never saw his Lear and that was one hell of a role to return to the stage with and was arguably the highlight of a top career. |
