Who was it that posted about how wonderful it had been to travel through Austria, where everyone willingly wore not just masks, but the high-grade masks mandated by the government? A month later Austria went into lockdown, followed by Germany and France. 🤔

Oh, that as me! But it was Vienna only, it's Italy I've been travelling through, if we wanna get technical about it. :-)
And nobody is saying that masks are the be all and end all to end a pandemic. It's one of many tools and every little helps. And I am also not advocating that mask wearing should continue for ever for everyone every single day. But if you are coughing and sneezing and still go on public transport, then I don't see why wearing a mask to not spread your germs with everyone around you is too much to ask for. But as I said, no chance of common courtesy becoming 'popular' in this country, because shed loads of people can't even be bothered to do that during the height of a pandemic.

Oh, I don't have a problem with people with the sniffles e.t.c wearing a mask, I agree that's courtesy. But that's not what we have with the mask mandates e.t.c. If mask wearing was limited to when you are feeling ill, I thought it was be adhered to lot more.

And that’s me being generous (I live close to the Dutch border).

One thing that's definitely interesting over here is the lack of focus on specific mask types. In most European countries there is regulation around this and in Canada for example there is super clear guidance The science on this is super clear when it comes to N95 (FFP2) v Surgical v Cloth and could really be helpful for more vulnerable people. There's still too much of a focus on hand washing and airborne droplets from coughs etc when in reality most transmission is through aerosol meaning a well fitted, filtering mask makes considerable difference .Whether this has been ignored due to the fact the government hasn't adequately provided NHS staff with appropriate PPE I have no idea but it seems a simple step to at least advise people on the effectiveness of different face coverings to give them a choice.

One thing that's definitely interesting over here is the lack of focus on specific mask types. Not just in the UK... the US CDC today finally conceded that cloth masks aren't as effective as surgical masks (let alone KN/N95s). I thought they'd advised that months ago, but apparently not.

No more mask mandates anywhere and he says he is expecting to remove isolation rules in March or sooner if the 'science' (or more party revelations) suggest it's the right time to do it. :-)

There seems to be massive cognitive dissonance in mask and lockdown lovers when it comes to very inconvenient facts like this

I really don't follow the logic that says...
"Cases are rising; we need to introduce restrictions." Cases start falling as the restrictions do exactly what they're supposed to do. "Cases are falling; we don't need restrictions."
This is like the guy who was wondering why he kept paying for anti-dandruff shampoo when he didn't have dandruff, so he switched to a regular shampoo and discovered the reason.

I’m glad the mandatory mask rule is going again (hopefully for good now!)
Now just wait for Sadiq Khan to demand you wear them on the tube when just last week he was calling for plan B restrictions to end.

This Government's stupidity is already well known, and it is merely a continuance of that.
The only plus is that from next Wednesday it will be easier to distinguish decent human beings from selfish ones by seeing who still wears a mask on public transport (obviously excluding those who are genuinely exempt, many of whom wear the lanyards anyway).
I will still have no qualms about moving as far away as possible from anyone who doesn't have sufficient manners to put a mask on in enclosed spaces like public transport. It is the simplest of common courtesies.

We aren't post covid yet though, we still have about 90k cases a day with less testing being done. Don't get me wrong, numbers are definitely heading in the right direction but to literally go back to no restrictions at all (apart from isolation if positive) is premature as far as I'm concerned.
And for Distantcousin's explanation, just because I believe the science that masks help in crowded indoor environments at times when there are high levels of infection around doesn't mean I am a lockdown lover. Or a mask lover for that matter, I bloody hate those things, especially as I wear glasses. But in certain situations I think they are warranted and worth the little bit of inconvenience.

No one knows anyone's situation and its nobodies business what they believe

If this pandemic has taught us anything, it's that the public by answering large appears selfish. Mandates had to be introduced precisely because people wouldn't comply voluntarily. I appreciate that some are genuinely exempt but the vast majority aren't. Their selfishness puts everybody at risk.

If a majority of the public don't want to wear masks voluntarily, you can shout at them about it but its not going to change much I also disagree about the public being selfish over the last 2 years, just because a majority aren't doing what YOU want them to do

The questions you should be asking are: 1. Are masks beneficial in reducing the risk of Covid-19 transmission? The answer is yes. 2. Does Covid spread more quickly in enclosed spaces with greater numbers of people? The answer is yes. Therefore, anyone who does not wear a mask (without actual exemption) in an enclosed public space is wilfully choosing to create a higher risk of spreading Covid. In doing so, they are wilfully creating a higher risk of giving Covid to others, including in particular vulnerable people. And they are prolonging the pandemic and all its consequences by choosing not to contribute to simple measures to reduce the opportunities for the virus to spread. On any measure of the collective rights and responsibilities of living in a society, that is nothing but selfish.

I can't find anything that suggests this

No one knows anyone's situation and its nobodies business what they believe Indeed - you don't know if the person beside you on the Tube who you cough over because you can't be bothered to wear a simple mask is immuno-compromised but for some reason has to travel. They have no choice but to do so, whereas you have a choice to wear a mask. Not difficult to see how your own argument proves you to be selfish. Beliefs don't come into it, it's about medical facts and people who think their person comfort is more important than being a responsible member of society. That is inherently self-centred.
