We do have Cruella to look forward to from May 28th and The Father from June 11th... I suspect there'll be a lot of classics showing in cinemas for the first month or so before newer titles come out. I'm hoping to see Nomadland in IMAX as Chloe Zhao encouraged us to do so due to the aspect ration difference. I've started booking shows again but all of which are socially distanced performances just to be on the safe side. How confident do we feel that shows opening without social distancing can do so from the dates they're supposed to be reopening?

He is saying that Osborne broke through with new theatre..well he did. Of course we can now look back on Rattigan, Noel Coward and see more than perhaps their contemporaries did and some say that Osborne lead to Eastenders and not much else. If Hare thinks he has made a major contribution, well he isn’t wrong. But he isn’t that crass. What he wants is that theatre becomes what we all talk about rather than Line of Duty...but v hard to make that happen. In a funny sort of way, the televising of plays which has been happening during Covid time might help make people think a night at the theatre would be interesting. Theatre going is a bug though, one you need to be exposed to early on...

I'm all for anything that get's it back up and running and can't wait to be back but honestly after a year and a half of saving and basically becoming a Martin Lewis clone, the thought of all this expense again on culture and leisure is really bothering me! Haha! I will definitely be much more economical now compared to how I was before this, where I really was spending far too much willy nilly.

Has he not heard of Phoebe Waller-Bridge? Lucy Prebble? Mike Bartlett? James Graham?

My local theatre has recently announced an end of June reopening with a show by our operatic society, so I've just made my first theatre booking in 15 months!! It's socially distanced, which I can understand, as there's not yet a guarantee it won't be needed after 21st June. I'm so excited

This has probably been asked before, so apologies apologies repeating. Would cast/crew with contracts on a long running show have been on furlough?

Some crew/wardrobe have been, if they are employed by the Production Company. As show crew I was on furlough for a while then made redundant, I was employed by the theatre not the producer. Cast tend to be on year contracts that are renewed (or not) each year.

Good news from the new "lets do london" campaign with West End Live returning this year. On BBC news they also mentioned late theatre performances and extended openings for Museums/Galleries.

Not sure that would work. There was a bit of a fuss online a couple of years ago where a producer (I think) said the expansion of the night tube was a wonderful thing as it meant they could have performances late into the night. Pretty much no one agreed with him.

If anything I'd like theatre performances to start earlier, not later. Travelling from outside London it's usually a mad dash for a train. Even starting at 7 instead of 7:30 would make a lot of difference.

Whereas I would love them to start later as getting there from work by 7pm would be impossible - 7.30pm is tight enough and I never have time to eat.

I wish Saturday evening performances started at 7pm. When your matinee finishes at 4.30pm, killing 3 hours on your own wandering between Prets is so boring! 🤣

That's what late night Saturday opening at Tate Modern is for...

I believe that cast and creatives are generally freelance and self-employed, so they would not be entitled to furlough. It varies. Equity who cover acting and stage management, and the musicians union, like members to be selfemployed but BECTU who look after the technicians have them on PAYE contracts and can be furloughed. That said, some shows closed fully, like Phantom, so no furlough for the crew as it is done on the idea that there will be a job for them to return to.

Yes, but I was only talking about the cast and creatives.
Crew can be employed by the production company or the venue itself as employees. Therefore they are entitled to furlough.
Some crew members are self-employed and are contracted to the production and are not entitled to it.

I just booked for Talent at the ‘World Famous’ (#tallpaul) Crucible and was surprised to see that some perfs are being sold as SD in bubbles, whilst others are not.

Leeds Playhouse are adopting a similar strategy for some of their stuff. Perhaps trying to ensure they get their core "older" audience back out if they are still feeling nervous.

So near and yet so far. It's going to be an anxious wait ahead across the live events industry, especially for those shows like Cinderella which intend to be full-steam ahead from 21 June.

How are events meant to function? Dangling the carrot of reopening but refusing to set up a proper cancellation insurance policy while saying the new variant is spreading.

But if there will always be new variants popping up, which seems likely, does that mean we'll just keep shutting down in the future as and when? How can any business plan ahead and how can anyone plan their lives?
I know that a vaccine doesn't mean zero Covid, but it seems to have made the population significantly safer, or as safe from the virus as we'll realistically ever be. So, if not now... when?

Well to be fair we aren't all vaccinated yet, so we aren't as safe as we are ever going to be yet. We will be at the end of July. New variants are a cause for concern when there are still large groups of people still not vaccinated and able to get sick and pass it on at higher rates than vaccinated people.
