Netflix/Prime/Apple etc TV Streaming - The General Thread

Seen a lot of praise for Heartstopper, though after the first two episodes I’m not really feeling it. It’s nice but it’s all a bit too earnest (and very middle-class) for me I think. And every time there’s a scene in a bedroom I can’t help wondering why their walls are covered in movie posters and album covers from the 90s.

I'm in my 40s and loved Heartstopper. I wish I had something like this when I was younger. I'm also glad it isn't edgy, everything gay seems to be edgy or depressing. This is sweet, hopeful and romantic and hopefully shows that being gay isn't setting yourself up for a life time of misery. There are plenty of shows like this for straight romance, why not gay. I also liked the diversity in terms of cast and also sexuality BUT its also not preachy and the message doesn't slap you round the face.

The animations link back to the graphic novel.i don't mind them but can see how they could annoy others.

The acting is also oustanding, and there are some genuinely moving moments as the series goes on.

I went in expecting not to like it but honestly think its the best thing Netflix have done in a couple of years.

Yeah the genius of it (maybe genius is lending it a little more credit than it's due but I really did love it) is that it is a cliché and maybe slightly sickly sweet teen romance but how often do you get one of those with LGBTQ+ stars? It's radical in how unradical it is. But also I like that the clichés aren't so drawn out and convoluted as in other shows - e.g. in a lesser show the date with Imogen subplot would have been extended for ages and twisted into some liar revealed subplot but here it lasts an episode and it's handled maturely and everyone involved is understanding.

I'm just glad positive representation (which doesn't shy away from some of the harsh realities) like this exists so that queer kids won't grow up only ever seeing the lives of people like them ending in tragedy.

My other half raves about Ted Lasso, but that is the one streaming service I don't have. Watched a ton of clips on YouTube and absolutely love it.

Been a huge fan of Waddingham since Spamalot. She was miles better than Catherine Zeta-Jones as Desirée in A Little Night Music. Huge fan.

I was just thinking I may need yet another rewatch of my 90s comfort show. Nice to see some fellow X-Philes on here!

We binged ‘One of Us is Lying’ on netflix last week. It’s a trashy teen whodunnit but lots of fun. Also, a reminder for ‘Slow Horses’ (or grimy Spooks, as I labelled it) that is now available in full on apple.

Just discovered Mozart in the Jungle on Amazon Prime. Rather good and Bernadette Peters is in it.

Definitely stick with it. It’s a brilliant family drama. It’s a mix of emotions - some episodes are very sad and some are funny and some are dramatic. It’s exactly like life.

Did you watch Thirtysomething many years ago? Ken Olin was involved in both and the series certainly have similar DNA. Although I think This Is Us has the edge on the writing front.



The first 4 four series keep the standard as high as it started (episode 1 is one of my favourite opening episodes of any series ever). I think it becomes merely very good for the last two series but still worth sticking with it.

Totally agree. But it is still very good. The penultimate ever episode felt like a finale. And the episode about Miguel was brilliant.
