The Pasadena Playhouse cast is SO much more interesting. Take note, Off-Broadway.

Casting a Latino man as the hero of the show, and Audrey - a character who is a victim of physical and verbal abuse - played by a black trans woman, is inspired. This production has LAYERS, people! Plus...Mother Blanca is wonderful and insanely talented.
The Off-Broadway cast is top notch. But compared to ambitions of the Pasadena production, it brings nothing new to the table.

Cast album just been released today. Is on Spotify.
Not quite sure what to think. The synths are cool, nevertheless.

I like a lot of what I've heard and the new orchestrations are a nice change but one of the Greek Chorus seems to have an accent that is kind of distracting, Johnathon Groff sounds great but is a bit bland and Tammy Blanchard has some baffling line readings that are really distracting and laughably bad in places especially in Feed Me when she's saying "Yes Doctor!" and when she's dying (both times she sounds disinterested and like she's half asleep). Christian Borle is really great though.

I absolutely adore Groff but this cast recording hasn’t done all that much for me to be honest. Would have loved to have seen it though.

Cast recordings have recently been quite lacking. I get the impression that they are so overly engineered which creates a sanitized and artificial sound, be it on this recent recording or the Moulin Rouge recording.
I haven't seen it yet because prices have been insane but I have a ticket in January. I think La Groff will be gone by then but I heard great things about Gideon.

Don't know if its of any interest but they have just cast Jeremy Jordan as Seymour.
Regardless of his talent and skill, I'm not a huge fan of casting hot actors as Seymour and other roles where its in their character that they are not hot. Just because you put a pair of black rimmed glasses on an actor does that detract from him actually being sexy?!
I know its not a huge thing and im being over the top partially to be humorous, but was wondering if other people felt the same or different about things like this? Character actor roles that are also leads are few and far between (my first thought was Elder Cunningham). Would love to hear other peoples opinions!

It's true. Most West End and Broadway musical theatre actors look like models, and it's an industry that can be very biased against average looking people. As hugely talented as Jake Gyllenghall, Jonathan Groff and Jeremy Jordan are, it must be frustrating for a lot of character actors to be robbed of the few musical theatre leading roles written specifically for them.

I'm seeing it tonight. That's all. I'm glad JJ is not in it yet. Seeing him in SMASH just ruined it for me forever. He would have been a better replacement for Christian Borle.

He'd be a fantastic fit for the Dentist. I've heard great things about Gideon Glick so I hope you enjoy the show.

Got to say, this is wonderful and it’s a shame in took me so long to see it. Managed to get a third row seat in the central section through Drops for under $100 including fees, so a bargain for this venue. Sold out, and not a typical theatre audience. Lots of geek T-Shirts etc.
Andrew Barth Feldman is perfect and adorable. Sarah Hyland is good, but I felt took a while to get going.
Huge reception for James Carpinello whenever he appeared. Very over the top and funny. Audience members snapping photos. He’s the draw of this version.
I expect this will run for years, with regular new star casting. Something I’ll see again, budget permitting.

So they're doing a live performance in Times Square with previous and current cast, the new cast reveal on September 19th!
Any ideas who could be the new leads?

There have been rumours going round that they've been trying to get Ellen Greene She's definitely still got it. She was great at the Encores concert. Her and those new orchestrations would be so great.

Really..? A concert is quite different to a run in a show, and she is 73! And who would be playing Seymour, unless they make him a lover of the elderly... 😂

For a short run it would be the nicest hot ticket in New York. Could any musical theatre fan pass up the opportunity to see her?
