I think most of the 2020-2021 musical rivivals might announce their intentions sooner rather then later so they don’t get lost with Jackman’s Music Man coming as well.
I’ve heard whispers that it might be an all female cast, but I don’t know how true that is.

So after a long delay this has finally started previews in Boston and the stars aligned with a work trip for me to catch the show last night, with a great $25 ticket in the third row.
It is indeed an all female cast (or rather, non male casy, and for myself not knowing the show at all, I thought it worked very well. It’s a strange musical - there is a lot of dialogue and extended book scenes and the songs don’t really advance the plot through. Crystal Lucas-Perry Was fantastic as John Adams.
This heads to Broadway in September running to January. Will be interesting to see what the critics say because they can probably compare to a traditional production.

Its not progress its sensationalism. I know it's hard to really understand things when triggered, but waaaaayyyy back in the day there was this guy called Shakespeare. And women weren't allowed on stage then. So men dressed up as women and played lovers and queens and nuns and more. Everyone accepted it. People cheered and were moved, laughed at the comedies, and the plays lasted. Now, a group of women are going to play male roles because. they. can. And what an interesting idea to see women play the founding fathers, and what that might do to the piece, and what that would say about America's continued slow ride to women's equality. And my GOD, with abortion at the height of people's minds, women's equality is important. Now, one more thing: when something like this gets produced, they have to get permission from the author(s) or their estate. They can't just do it. Someone who knows and loves the piece intimately has to approve it. So, again, I know it's really hard when you're triggered, but I'm not sure you understand what "sensationalism" is. And your outrage over it is pretty sad. Welcome to 2022. Join us in the modern age. |

Mistake one: the announcement that it's pre-Broadway which make it high profile and causes pressure on the creative team. keep it low-key until you know you have something special. two: I haven't heard that the actors are playing the roles as written. If you have please add a link. three: Diane Paulus is a flashy surface artist and the shows lack substance, character development and care from the director. I'm not making the trip to Boston this time, as I did for JLP 2018. |
